hey marty, i am really inspired by your playing. I think i'll take forever to reach ur level! so just a question, does this pattern apply for all scales?
@Sareth14 i am no expert but to my knowledge the difference is simply 1 note. in Eminor, the A# note would be the "blues note" and if you play the pentatonic scale with that note its considered the blues scale.
Is there anyway you could do mouthfull of diamonds by phantogram? Im just a beginner and I feel like that should be an easy song, but for some reason it is tripping me up a little bit.
.....i remember that in a video you did you told to always slide with ring finger.....and in this one you slide with the middle one...:D just saying...i know u silde with what finger feels better.....:X
@waru93 It depends on the lick and where you're going after the slide. In this case he's doing an E pentatonic run which usually is played with the middle finger, so he sets that up by sliding with the middle finger.
Marty, can you make a video on how to play the theme from the tv show Sons of Guns? The song is "Shelter Me" by Tab Benoit. I've been tryin to find videos and tabs but haven't had any luck so if you could make a lesson that would be awesome!
Hey marty... I had to ask. Was the licks in the video i bit inspirred by Baby please don't go by ( all those artist who made a cover of it, dont who original made it ) but thxs for the lesson rock on!!!
Wow, great lesson, any one who's tried to emulate SRV has tried to pull off this lick. I almost had it from listening to him, but struggled a bit with the last bit of it, the quick tap of the first fret of the A string basically.
That's what so good about Stevie's playing, at first it sounds very pentatonic until you realize that he hits a lot of notes that are outside that scale that he frequently uses. He's extended it brilliantly and in that way is a huge influence on a lot of people today.
Hey Marty.. I've learned most everything about blues from your vids.. and i'm thinking of buying the master class set tonight.. i bought the music theory ones.. Nice Work! anyway i just want to make sure there is still plenty for me to learn. New Stuff on them ya know.. if ya want to see where i'm at check a vid or two.. and i'm better than i sound in most of those now! thanks
Hey Marty, If you're ever in Seattle, I manage the top Jazz/Blues venue in town (Easy to figure out who) Stop in and say Hi, I really need to buy you a drink, if for no other reason than just to say thanks, the effort you have put into these lessons are greatly appreciated. I know I am speaking for a lot of people. You are the best teacher I have found online or anywhere! THANK YOU!!! Bernie
At the beginning I was like, ok, I`m just gonna have a look at this video...after the first 10 seconds I was like..hmmm should I learn it..10 seconds later I was like....mmm this lick is soo tasty, i will learn it. Now: Hehe I can play it...:))
@martyzsongs Dude!! I have been trying REALLLY Hard to figure out how to play The House that Built Me by Miranda Lambert, one of my friends wants me to learn it so I can teach it to her, could you help me some how?? It would be reallllllyyyy awesome!!!!!
@MultiAirGunner buy a godin. or an american fender, depending on what you like. if you want heavy sounds, i'm not the right one to asses you for I only play the blues and some jazz
A nice little thing to do at the end of the E Blues scale is to slide the E string from the 3rd fret up to the 5th, slide back to the 3rd & finish with the open E. There's a lot of variations u can do with it & they all sound good. The E Blue is my favorite scale, and I love the lesson where you taught us how to play it running down the neck .
Marty, I thought of a cool contest for your next DVD give away, or free lessons...etc. You should have a "Coolest Lick Contest." If coolest is a word. But we could send in videos of our licks we learned based on the techniques you've taught us. Just thought it might be more rewarding than some1 getting picked at random who's only been following ya for a week.
dude dose any body remember in led zepplin bbc session when the do tthe medly on whole lotta love, jimmy page plays a kick ass riff that sounds exactly like the one at 5:12-5:15

Marty Schwartz, at 11:47 P.M. I decided to learn a new lick to add to the wide assortments that I've acquired over my 2 years of playing some blues and I click on your new video in my subscription box. And within just ten minutes you have taught me a great new lick to play. I'm sure you hear this all the time while going through comments, but Sir, You are a great teacher. Thank you so much. I have been playing for 25 years. I like to strum and have always wanted to learn some leads. you are f'n awesome ! Thanks again and God Bless !
Love the Fender Tone! Sold both my Ibanez's and have gone Fender Tele and Strat.....both American Deluxe's. May get a Suhr guitar! Marty great job as usual! Great tone!
KILLER TONE! Marty, we'd appreciate any tone tips, amp used, settings, FX, etc with your AWESOME Videos! I checked out your web site finally. Wow, you've got it all.
Your blues lessons are nothing short of awesome! I don't just learn to "play by numbers", but instead, I'm learning how to actually play the guitar by learning why different notes and phrases work together. Keep up the great work!! --- Sent From martyzsongs's AppRats (Facebook App)!
How many strats do you have? Everytime I see your strat it looks different?
I bought one trying to get that cool coil sound. I'm 90% there, but....Do I need active pickups or something? Or is this a different guitar for a different sound?
BTW.. Is the middle pickup useless or am I?
Marty I need answers. OK.. maybe not need but really want..
@pfmrokman hey thanks!!! I have 1 strat. I just put in some EMG noiseless pickups which gives the guitar a little more hi fi sound. an ibanez tubescreamer through a tube amp and the guitar is stock USA from 2005 or so. thx again
@duckman633 your guitar strings will stretch as you play and will work its way out of tune - its inevitable - cheap tuning knobs may cause that to happen more often - you can buy better ones
@duckman633 i may be able to help. if the strings are new they can do that often, u may need to adjust ur bridge, and after tuning the g string leave it sit for about 10 minutes to get "use" to the tuning. hope i helped somewhat
Stupid question but does playing in a different key mean the same scale shape but starting and ending on the root note of a different key?. If you know what I mean lol. --- Sent From martyzsongs's AppRats (Facebook App)!
@stevieoha a different key would be a different root note, the root note is the note of the key that you are playing over, say if you were playing a progression in A, you would play the A minor/major pentatonic scale depending on what sound you want... hope that helps :)
@stevieoha Yes, if you play amajor scale starting on the 2nd fret of the A string then you are playing the key of B Major. Move that up entire shape up a fret and it will be C major.
