The Met really show have been embarassed tp ask him to sub for the King of Cancelations since they fired him. Does an excellent job here. Jan Peerce sang the same aria in his Golden Anniversary Concert at age 75 with good ring in the top still
By this time he's developed a wobble on the top but his middle and bottom registers are still just as fresh as they were in the 1950s. If you close your eyes and listen to him sing the first phrase of the aria you won't be able to tell the difference. Only when he goes higher do you realize that he is over 70! I saw him in a masterclass 4 years ago and the middle is still perfect. The wobble on the top was a lot worse but he could still sing a secure Bb! He sang the Forza aria for us in KEY!
I remember this when I first say it on television in 1996. At first I was worried that The Great Bergonzi was about to make a fool of himself at 72 singing this taxing aria. As I was listening, I feared his voice would crumble. I held my breath until the very end, then gave thanks to God that there were still operatic giants walking the land. Young tenors take note: May God grant you the gift and longevity of the peerless, the great Carlo Bergonzi! BRAVO!
Ormai aveva fatto il suo tempo sarebbe stato meglio non si fosse esibito in questa circostanza... ormai la voce gli va di qua e di la...l intonazione è scarsa. l acuto non dice niente.
And you are (with a question) the biggest waste of human space I've encountered in a long, long time. It's painfully clear that you know absolutely nothing about great verdian singing, or anything else for that matter. Instead of posting useless drivel here on youtube, why don't you go and find a surgeon who can implant a brain in that empty space between your shoulders.
And judging by your knowledge of supremed verdian singing, you were probably there when Caruso sang- that you make you either extremely senile, or very dead. Move on asshole.
He lost in horseshoes several times, then that footrace down by the Med, and several woodchopping events in Canada he semmed to falter...but in singing he's a GIANT. Oh...looking at your use of THAT word and I see you actually meant "overate." I confess I did also and as late as this week but I haven't heard from this GREAT TENOR! He'sbusy with his amazing singing career! Bravo Carlo!
Strained? where? he was 72 years old here, the voice has a slight beat in the upper register sometimes, the tone is still very fresh, he sings with extraordinary style passion, he indulges in no excesses, it's a lesson in style and he is a great tenor of yesterday.... he could have any of today's tenors for breakfast
For a few moments at the end as he stands with his eyes closed, Levine shaking his head, a thunder could have struck the audience and stunned them, that's how quiet that room was, albeit briefly. The brightness of youth is not in the voice anymore, but the spirit and will of The Man is all there. Indomitable and eternal.
Bergonzi was the finest Verdi tenor of the 20th Century and that includes Caruso.Although long past his best this excerpt should be studied by any aspiring singer who wants to learn the art of bel canto, because after Bergonzi it died.
I was at Carnigie Hall, when at 76 he did his first performance of otello. There where moments when he sounded amazing and others where he didn't. I was just so damn happy to be there to see one the greatest tenors of all time. He did not finish, but at least I was able to hear him on stage and will always be thankful for that.
This is one of my all-time favorite performances by any singer, any where. He walked out on that stage for the ailing Pavarotti and left a glimmering operatic glimpse of an era now gone. Please note, Maestro Bergonzi was recalled to the stage four times. Innamorata, indeed.
For 40 years I've listened to this magnificent tenor and my admiration climbs now even though he is 82 years of age! He had it all and was the equal of almost all but two or three leading tenors at the very top. Disciplined, intelligent, elegant, poised, constrained and precise to a fault were just a few of Carlo Bergonzi's qualities on-stage and off. Immensely vocally gifted as he was Bergonzi will live on forever.
I have never agreed more with anything you have said(and that says a lot!)Even more than his technique and voice there is the fact he was a reliable hire-he showed up and ready...and the rest...well we know don't we!

I´ve listened to great tenors since Caruso.
Bergonzi lacks overtones, He sounds flat and unintersting.
He is nothing but a mediocre tenor. Very clearly displayed in this performance.
I prefer Bjorling, Corelli, di Stefano and Gigli although recordings doesn´t do him justice.

As they say -- those who can't -- teach, and those who can't teach -- become critics.
The ovation he received from this appreciative audience at The Met says it all friend.
