hey lewin , what do you suggest for home recording vocal , akg p220 / p420? honestly i can't make my own decision, please email me = pratama.windrio@yahoo.com thank you
Hey Lewin :) great videos man, i love it, ur really a good helper with these musical topics and what not.. uhm i'd like your advise on something.. i make rap music, my room has no foams wot so ever, i have a window which brings in noise from outside even when its closed.. i have a closet (wood) which is like 12 footsteps away from my window,,and was thinking of emptying it all out, and puttitng acoustic foam inside, and have my mic on a stand, and record it in that closet.. .coz of outside noise
would u think its a good idea to have my mic placed in my closet..on a tripod, with foam all around, only becuase if i had it in the centre of my room, the usb mic would pick up outside noise easy..
nice videos dude, always getting better. i need some opinions, what do you consider the 'best' noise gate pedal? i know they all 'steal' a little your sustain, but is there one of them you consider the 'best'?
umm lewin, the reason why there is sooooooo much reverb in your room is because you have barely ANY foam in there and you have none on the ceiling, which is extremely important. You can hear the reverb EASILY when you clap even though you are using a good mic. and also, YOU WANT THE ROOM TO BE AS "DEAD" AS POSSIBLE WHEN YOU RECORD DRUMS!! I am really sorry if I piss you off mate. but your videos are great and I love the two mic drum technique!
@DjCalliber IT doesn't piss me off, but I will say it depends on what you want out of your drums sounds. I personally do not like the sound of a completely dead drum tone. In most high end studios you will hear a lot of room reverb in their tracking room and find very little padding.
@DjCalliber I THINK GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF MICROPHONES MAY ENLIGHTEN YOUR VIEW A BIT MY FRIEND! ITHINK WITH THE RIGHT MIC YOU GOOD PICK UP JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF THAT CEILING FOR RECORDING DRUMS! THESE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS TOPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!
@strabbs1 you should definitely get garageband for the ipad! It's really awesome! I'm pretty sure you can buy midi controllers that can attach to the ipad too!
Lewin, one other cool thing you may want to look into for recording acoustic drums is the Clear Sonic SORBER baffles. These are cool because they are made from compressed fiberglas and IMO it works a little better for drums than the auralex foam, because of it's denser material. The other cool thing is they fold up and you can store them in a closet or take them to a gig, move them around, place them anywhere, etc, etc...
Awesome thanks man, Yeah the Trion 8000 looks good i"ll try it out! Do u have any vid"s on garageband? I use studio one Pro Version 2 right now, but im getting an imac next year and i know garageband is also pretty user friendly! Thanks
I just replaced my curtians with the real thick sound deadening ones over two windows. The room is quiter from outside noise and it has dampened the inside reflections off the windows as well. Well worth 20 bucks. Nice tips keep'em coming!
Very helpful video thanks! i was wondering if u could recommend a descent condenser mic for all uses(drum overheads/vocals) I use an akg perception(about $100 mic) its ok but i wanted to upgrade soon Thanks man!
Lewin is right on the money. The few times I've done tracking in a pro studio every one of them had wood paneling on the walls with some bass traps strategically placed. Sting's first solo album was recorded in a freaking castle with concrete walls and hardwood floors! Of course this was a big huge room where the sound takes longer to travel. The problem in most home studios with bad reverb is due to a small room.
The studios we have at school are actually raised so they're floating inside the room, with maybe a foot in between the two walls an all sides. That's the only way to technically "sound proof" a place. Seriously. People record drums in there, and out in the hall, you can NOT hear them. But that costs a lot of money to do.
Hey Lewin, do you have any examples of the drums you've recorded at your place without any instruments accompanying them? I would like to hear them "naked".
By the way, I've learned heaps from these videos...keep 'em comin'
We are building a studio and the walls are all made of wood, the room that we´re gonna use to record doesn´t have windows, what did you recomend me to put in the walls for a good quality acustic treatment?
hey im going to start using garage band im just looking for a mic to record vocals and guitar with i was looking at blue bluebird what are your thoughts?
I completely agree with Lewin about dead rooms. In my home studio I have blankets from my bed hanging from the walls in my small closet (about 6 ft by 3 1/2 ft). I leave the door open and place my microphone inside the doorway. I feel like it evens out and balances the sound perfectly. Great video Lewin! Spread the word haha
I'm studying music production, and I obviously study acoustics, and the more I study, the less I know. I mean, you can be mathematical, or absolute about these things, but I find that a different approach to each case is the more correct thing to do. and also, just listen rather than trying to figure out stuff through 'logic'. math isn't always accurate, cause there are just too many variables in place.
I need help. When I'm recording I hear a really anoying crackling sound. I've already disabled my internal sound card. But the problem stays as it is.
If ther's someone hear who can help me, please answer this message.
@mathdmusic On your DI configuration, lower your buffer size to its smallest value. Record and test. Continue to raise the buffer size until you begin to hear the crackling, then obviously set it back to the previous value.
This may not solve your problem as it may not be the actual issue, but if your "crackling" isn't caused by clipping, distortion, or interference, it's usually cause by your DI (m-audio interface).
@Stratomacaster it's clipping on the interface pannel, but not on the interface device itself and not in cubase. Which I guess is kinda strange. I've put a L2 limitter on almost every tracks. But I don't know any other way to higher my sound output without having clipping :s. I could use a little help on this. thank you for your answer
@mathdmusic My pleasure. Have you tried using a compressor inline before going into your interface? It's a great way to even out the sound and squash those spikes. Just don't squeeze it too much or you'll lose too much of the dynamics of your recording.
@GaragebandandBeyond Thank you for your answer, I will go to the store right now. And also thank you for the work that you accomplish here on youtube !!!!. Your channel is really helpful for amateur musicians.
I've been singing against my window blackout blinds and it has lowered the echo I get in the room to an acceptable level, until I get decent foam pads across the walls.
One more thing:
Could you tip me on how you prevented the T2i from focusing the Stealth box behind you? On my "Leg Nicht Auf" videosong the camera played a trick on me and changed the focus to a bunch of picture frames behind me. I didn't notice it until I was already editing the video! LOL!
I know this has nothing to do with this video, lol, but im getting the new presonus audiobox 1818vsl usb, and am going to be recording drums and other instruments(sometimes all at once). Do you know if there is any latency? i want to be able to record over stuff and not have to time align it. Thanks:)
@drummerboy9551 not really, I use a presonus usb audiobox and I don't need the 0 latency but I think there are a couple videos about it, just search on youtube
Hi Lewin, i wonder how much inch your Auralex pads are?
