Despite that cat business (and that was one of the best 'cat gets his' scenes I ever saw) there is a serene, magical quality in some of the Sniffles cartoons. Later when Sniffles moved to comic books some of the magic quality went with him and was the basis for the stories. The cartoon Bedtime For Sniffles (also on YT) is almost pure serenity and pathos. Sniffles at his best is perhaps unique in cartoon history.
Lool i remember the 'how dry i am' song from years and years ago and looked it up today. Still as awesome as ever. I will admit that i never knew the mouse was drunk at first now its blindingly obvious haha. A mouse and an Electric Razor getting wasted at a drug shop at night sounds like fun.
There's also a cartoon on YT where a cider mill bubbles over, leaks the hard stuff into the millstream, and all the animals and insects who drink from it downstream get hammered.
Someone should do a top ten list of the all-time best classic drunk cartoons. This'd be on there; in no particular order, I'd also have "Porky's Party", also from Warners; "Alpine Climbers" (Disney), "Part-Time Pal" (MGM), and an obscure Columbia short whose name escapes me, about a St. Bernard who is good at his rescue dog job when sober but a nuisance when he's drunk. I'm now looking to see if Popeye ever had a nip. I mean, he was a sailor, after all, and they are reputed to be hard drinkers.
Originally released in May 1939, and the first of Chuck Jones' whimsical "Sniffles" cartoons (produced sporadically, through 1946), which primarily concerned a little mouse coping with a "big" world. Carl Stalling uses "Deep In A Dream" as a theme. By 1939, most drugstores- especially "chains", like Walgreens and Rexall- were also selling items other than medicine (including clocks, percolators, hair pins, and other "junk", as shown here). And some "cold remedies" DID have a high alcohol count.
My cousins & I grew up on bugs bunny & we never tried to do the crazy things in the cartoons, had sense we did use our brains back than. We came home from school had a snack & watched some cartoons & went out to play we had to be dragged inside. now days kids hardly know what outside is it is all about the video games these days, how sad is that. do kids even play hide & seek or ditchem these days?
They wont show these cartoons anymore because parents are worried their kids will act out everything they see from them, and kids today are just stupid enough to do so.
Another one not on the Looney Tunes DVD collection.
