My sister and I were watching the credits and we realized that our family is related to Dr. Blalock. Before we saw this movie I had no idea that we were related to him. Think it's interesting that we have cousins who are doctors. Maybe I should have pursued the courses after AP Biology instead of stopping there...
The message isn't only about saving "blue babies". Maybe it's a side message, but it's clear that people those days were still mostly racists. Doctor Blalock made the first step to accept Thomas as an equal colleague.
Normally I wouldn't be drawn to movies like this, but Alan Rickman is the kind of actor that can give movies something extra. Can't wait to watch this.
@Ferolious I agree with you about Alan Rickman...think it's too bad a lot of people only know him as Snape from Harry Potter when his range as an actor is so much more than that. He's been in Dogma (high camp); the Harry Potter movies; Truly, Madly, Deeply: Die Hard and all this after an impressive stage career. I personally think Something the Lord Made is one of his finest performances.
This movie was AWESOME! I watched it in my medical assistant class this afternoon..** SPOILER ALERT**MY ONLY ISSUE..is this...once they cured the blue baby..the health transition of blue to pink was way too fast..it would have been better if they only made the lips or something turn into the normal appearance. Anyone else agreed? Another than that..a FLAWLESS movie and one that everyone should embrace.
@Tool78Maynard the change is immediate in "blue babies" (that have congenital heart defects that are inducing hypoxia). i was just reviewing this in medical school. The blaloch-taussig-thomas shunt redirects blood from one of the upper extremity arteries. Their heart chambers and arteries are "hooked on" the wrong way, so oxygenated blood stays in the lung and the blood in the rest of the body is deoxygenated.
