I think Andrew Ryan, even though he even built a huge city underwater, was basically not that strong-minded a person. So when Frank Fontaine, the worst badass character in the 21st century, whose evil is almost equivalent to that of Iago in Othello, began to threaten Rapture in various ways, Ryan just couldn't endure it. Thus, he eventually ended up being screwed up with his original thoughts and the underwater city... sad...

I think that this game shows nothing is perfect..Andrew was a good man but did evil, Fontaine had an orphanage and a shelter for the homeless yet he still turned evil, a man chooses evil a slave obeys evil

I think that Ryan was perhaps trying to break the conditioning/geas that Atlas/Fontaine placed on his son...he was a scientist after all,and that was his last attempt to save everything.I dont think he wanted to die because Rapture was doomed.

Man it saddens me so much. Andrew was a good person. he tried to create the biggest city ever made. he discovered adam. everything was perfect. until frank fontaine arrives. frank cause raptures rebeillion that caused this whole mayhem in rapture. all this for adam ryan had lost control over his city and couldnt do anything else but saw his city fall apart that is why he want you to kill him for what he failed to he knew there wasnt hope for him when you think about it he is a good man

No he is not. He is a deranged madman. He tried to create a city free of "parasite", free of law, government and religion. He said that competition and free market are the only law he wants. And seized Fontaine Futuristics the moment he started losing his monopoly on genetic products. He said Rapture will be free of law, censorship and thought control. And locked everyone who disagreed with his ideas away in Persephone never to be seen again. He betrayed all his principles and failed Rapture.

@hitechmushroom Andrew Ryan was a terrible man. He's the perfect example of why pure, uncontrolled capitalism/libertarianism fails in the real world. He built a great city based on those morals, but when the chips were down and he was loosing to Fontaine, he folded. He fell back onto using authoritarian power to stay on top. Ryan is just another imperfect human who failed to stay true to his own moral code when the going got tough.
