Yes, this does make everyone think about how Policing should be in The 21st Century.
Idealised Police heroes like Jack Regan & George Carter: -Always tough, but decent & professional, contrast with the killings of Jean Charles De Menezes & Ian Tomlinson; -All of the dedicated day-to-day professionalism eclipsed by unique moments of stupidity & bungling.
-Like all organisations, The Metropolitan Police have some very unsuitable individuals who manage to get in....
Love it! I'm so glad I had the best years before the PC brigade &^%$#@ it all up! I used to respect the coppers - no more. Their just a control mechanism to keep the peasants under heel!.
The BEST rozzers on TV - by far - never surpassed & never will be - the PC brigade would wet themselves! That Ford Granny looked the dogs bits too!
Oh if i could go back - when things were poorer - but SO SO much better!
Love it! I'm so glad I had the best years before the PC brigade &^%$#@ it all up! I used to respect the coppers - no more. Their just a control mechanism to keep the peasants under heel!.

i used to work with garfield morgan who plays hoskins when we were both at uni in the early 60s. he was a right lazy bastard. we had to deliver sunblest bread to fine fare and i was the driver as he didnt drive, his job was supposed to be unloading the bread trays. all he did was sit in the cab and complain about rents. i was not suprised later to see he had made an acting carer out of it.
The Sweeney is THE defintive Police show ever made in the UK by a huge margin-nothing comes close. The series captures the gritty reality of Policing in the 70's, when the Police REALLY were the Police, not todays PC cuddily social workers with handcuffs Police! PACE 1984 destroyed the British Police-it's been downhill ever since. Thaw & Waterman were perfect on screen-very credible characters. British people deserve to have Police like Regan & Carter-hard, relentless, utterly determined!
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH I totally agree, I got cuffed a few times when I was a teenager. They used to call it police brutality! It's a shame there is'nt more of it today. Now the goody two shoes are more interested in your human rights! You just have to see the little toe rags today to see modern policing is'nt working!
With respect to true victims. As a NON-victim past Adultophile (me 13 teach 29) I love the true non-PC scene making today's mass-media-misled creeps cringe. The Sweeney in the Granada on an Obs-job near a schoolyard where girls are playing netball. (Today they'd all be semi-paramilitary hauled in for trumped up charges or compensation counselling.) Regan mutters,
" Whoever invented the gymslip should get a bloody medal ! " Carter retorts "Here, hold on Guv." Regan's closer, " Shut it !! "
This is the earlier of the two Sweeney intros. Funny thing is - the later intro, which featured a mark 2 Granada had a police car bell overdubbed, yet this one doesn't. Not inaccurate though - the Met used bells well into the eighties.
in 1980 i had a silver granada used to screech around nw london and pull over blokes have them against the wall with hands up ,we were only early twenties ,dont know how we never got our heads kicked in !!
CARTER: They didn't have any evidence against him, guv.
REGAN: Yeah, well perhaps we can find some.
CARTER: What--fabricate it?...Inspector, that's not fair.
The most non-PC show ever! And yet although it was violent, how many people actually got killed? It just goes to show that a good cop show does not have to be ghoulish and obsessed with homicide and death.
BTW, one of the main scriptwriters, Trevor Preston, also did a great early 70s kids show called the Ace of Wands.
Fords, like it or not are part of British history. There's nothing cooler than the old Granada, or the Mk3 Cortina from Life on Mars - the look of that car knocks spots of a lot of the cars around today.
No no no. The cars were awful in the 70's - particularly Ford and Brit Leyland which is why the Japanese imports did so well. They start rusting in a car wash! My Uncle worked at the Ford plant at Dagenham - which was so big it had its own railway station, and he was on strike more than he was working. And those Friday cars... jeez
Loved this show....they made them to last in those days! And your right- no PC BS!! ....and how refreshing it was to watch an old episode! Classic stuff!
My Dad was in the real Met Police Flying Squad during the same time that the TV Drama was being shown. He used to let me stay up and watch it with him. I found it fasinating especially learning the slang words such as blaggar, etc. He still says that there's never been anything since that showed the Police accurately. He hates the Bill, won't have it on!
The Bill sierra oscar, sierra oscar that's about how good the script goes.... the Sweeney packed more action in during the first two minutes (the teaser bit before the titles) than any other show! Check out a Taste of Fear, Jack or Knave episodes or the classic Nightmare
My Dad used to drive us round in a Ford Consul GT in the 70s like at the start of the sequence , great motor - Keep the glove box full of crisps and Mars bars non of this health food muck.
my dad used to let me stay up and watch the sweeney when i was a kid...was on at 9 on a monday evening...been nothin like it since...its still top drawer...john thaw was gr8 as regan!
WE'RE REGAN AND CARTER, GET YOUR TROUSERS ON YOUR NICKED, SHUT IT YOU SLAG. I must have a drink of whiskey from out my desk when I get back to the nick.
You don't see any of this on The Bill.
I used to stay up specially to watch it when I was at school.
Do you have the end credits? It was lke a soft jazz riff. I was allowed to stay up late on Sweeney nights and I still can't hear the end credits without falling asleeee..... zzzzzzz...
Sorry to be an anorak but the car featured is a Ford Consul 3.0 GT, The Consul was introduced the same time as the Granada and was basically the same car in cheaper trim, Hence ideal as a Police Car. Both were introduced in approx 1972. I used to sell them brand new, I'm that old!!
My dad had a Hillman Avenger and my mum had an Austin Maxi and when I sat into a friend's dad's Consul, I thought it was the biggest machine ever.....I WAS only 8 but still!
