Oh dear. Of all the games they had to pick Chinese Warrior for the ad? Sure, the game has big sprites. And that´s all it has. I´d rather play Kung Fu all day than just spend an hour with Chinese Warrior.
TG16 was awesome, problem I had was nobody had the games to rent in my area at the time so I had to purchase everything...being a kid it was hard to convince the 'rents to buy a $60 game I didn't know anything about hahaha.
@NecrophageonIII It's a low quality VHS recording, re-encoded with possibly two other lossy transfers (one to capture, one for youtube). I don't see how you can assume to judge anything from that, let alone count colors ;>_> If anything, the NES looks like it has more colors than it should, in this video, because of all the generation loss and such.
What a shame. All those pixels and colors, but nothing but horrible games. Except Jackie Chan's Kung Fu which was on NES!............and Galaga '90, Splatterhouse, Alien Crush, and Demon's Crush... which weren't.
awesome system back in the day. Best part used to be to save your game on a sd card, take it to the arcades and load your save in the arcade game. Ah good times.
@DD2225, The tactics are illegal now..but back then they were completely within boundaries....Yes, obligating game developers to develop for only one console is pretty illegal these days.
I'm not going to lie, that commercial had me at "hello" when I was 10 or 11 years old. I got sucked in. I thought the computer chip cartidges were cool and the CD ROM even cooler. Man , it wasn't even 16 bit graphics, well at least the chips weren't. It was more like 12 bit. The CD ROM games, maybe. So, the next year I asked my parents for a Sega Genesis in 1990 and the wanted to get back with Nintendo in 1991 with the SNES. LOL, TURBO GRAFX16, more like BOOSTER GRAFX12. Nuff said.
Ah, this era was a funny time. "16-BIT MEANS BIGGER GRAPHICS" makes no technical sense. (We have a more advanced GPU makes sense, but of course doesn't sound as cool.) And even better, the core CPU was 8-bit (which is really where it counts) and was also based on the 6502, same as the NES CPU.
What I always thought was interesting is that the Sega Genesis/Megadrive advertises itself as 16-bit, but the internal CPU actually performs 32-bit operations...
@signupsigma Agreed brother. For some reason, when I saw the T-16 commercials back in the day, I was like, wow the characters and sprites look bigger and the sound was pretty cool. I love both systems. But to this day when I play the T-16 it is still very very fun!
The bottom line is that the Turbo was more advanced but Nintendo had the market by the balls, less expensive, more major mainstream franchises, more games, more popularity=more success (7/10 homes in the U.S owned an NES), the NES had literally built an invinsible image and had total dominance from a game development standpoint which NEC lacked. NES and Turbo are my 2 favs.
Don't see how it could be better than the good ole NES, but hey, I'll spend good money to get one of these babies 2nd hand! I want every console ever! (heck, I even own a CD-I for crying out loud!)
Funny. Even back in the day people were bragging about their games' graphics. Does anyone in the gaming world think game play is more important than graphics? Thumb me up if you do. :D
I always loved this system. I stuck with Sega though and bought the Genesis. But I always thought the idea of Turbo buttons was really cool. The graphics were fantastic, the system just seemed exciting, it was attractively designed, many great games, etc.. I am really surprised that it didn't do better. I just remember walking into Radio Shack, and seeing how cool the packaging looked. I remember playing Keith Courage as well, and it was a really cool looking game.
lots of hate going on in these comments, jeez! guys, the NES kicks ass, and so does the TG16 / PC Engine. :] if you played both you'd know they both have _incredible_ damn games!
Ok Nintendo fanboys, dont hate. I love Nintendo, but c'mon T-16 was better from a technological stand point. The animation, colors, and sound tracks were all superior to the NES. Yes, there were some rip-offs. But I never saw anything like "Blazing Lazers" on the NES. Never.
I agree. Just compare some arcade conversions like Pac-Land, Galaga etc. The PC-Engine was pretty much a home arcade system of its time with some of the best Sega ports ever. Just look at After Burner, Outrun and Power Drift. And lets not forget the mighty Street Fighter 2. The PC-Engine version rivaled the Genesis/Mega Drive version and actually had better colours. It also had some of the best shoot em ups about (R-Type was better than the arcade!). Still love the Splatter House conversion :)
It's sad that the system didn't last long. With better third party support, it would've kicked Nintendo to the curb. Just another casualty of Nintendo's star power.
Marketing always trumps technology. The GameBoy and NES are proof positive of that.
Technology is not the most important aspect in video games.
For instance, a big reason why the Game Boy succeeded was because it kept things simple enough to not only be portable, but also practical and inexpensive for the technology that was available at the time.
There were more advanced systems than the Game Boy. But they were also more expensive, bulkier, and had very short battery life, all of which impacts their practicality as a portable system for the masses.
Now, you do want to have as advanced technology as you can get, but you must understand that there will be limitations as to how far you can go; make a system really advanced and it'll make its sophistication evident in its price tag, guaranteeing limited acceptable no matter how well you market the thing (example: 3DO and, when it first launched, the PlayStation 3).
Of course, back to the TG-16's failure, Nintendo's clout was a major factor. But to suggest that's all it was is kind of narrow.
The first problem with the Saturn was how it was designed; it used a lot of discrete processors, which would make the board more expensive to build and more difficult to downsize. The only advantage was that most of the processors, such as the two Hitachi SH-2s, were off-the-shelf.
Another was overambition; Sega released the Saturn too early as launch titles weren't ready when it came out. The early release was an effort to beat Sony and Nintendo.
Good god I loved blazing lazers.... and splatterhouse used to keep me up till dawn. TG-16 just had this special feel to it... it's hard to convey in words. But I still have my TG, along with 60+ games and all the add on gear wired up to my teevee.
I still play blazing lazers. it's almost a perfect shooter. And cybercore. gotta love cybercore.
Alot of those games could have benefited from better localization, but who cares? There's a special feel to the whole damn system and all its games.
Well you have to admit, the NES is a much easier target than the Genesis when it comes to comparing graphics (Although, I'd actually argue that most TG16 games looked more crisp and colourful than their Genesis counterparts.)
@STEFANROCKER23 You mean how Sega used to also do this? Easy. Because NES was king and TG16 and Genesis were competing against the NES, not just themselves.
@tripledrock I agree it was better as far as technology went. It was the first 16 bit console, and was out probably while the NES still had the choppy framerates and glitchy graphics in most games. I don't agree with soundtracks, however. the TurboGrafx16 sounds always felt tinny and bland compared to some of the NES's chiptunes.
@tripledrock I loved my TurboDuo but while the TG-16 was technically superior to the NES, the games weren't any better. SMB3 was a far better game than any of the Bonk titles.
The TG-16 did have some great shoot-em-ups though.
@tripledrock plus wut other movie based game turned out to be actually good other than gunhed? otherwise known in the us as blazing lazer, and yes, theres a movie and a manga for blazing lazers, both called gunhed.
Its China Warrior. The game wasnt that great. It was pretty much the same as Kung FU on the NES. It did look pretty good though. China Warrior is the exception though. TG16 library is awesome. Has some of the best games of all time. In japan they were still selling them along side competition as new as the PS2. Just never took off state side.
I like side by side comparisons, xbox 360 should do this type of commercial with a gaystation 3, cept then all the sony fan boys would start crying cuz it can't compare...
Well I think you can't do these things anymore. I think companies would sue you because of "copyright infringingment" for using their stuff to advertise yours. Or something.
Um.. you do realize that the ps3 has greater capabilities then the 360 correct? I dont own a ps3, i am a proud 360 owner.. but still the ps3 is a stronger system.. seems your the only crying fanboy.
I don't give a fuck what the claims are, I heard ps2 was so much more powerful then the xbox and it still got prison raped. Im not crying about anything, I left that comment 4 months ago when gaystation fans were still talkin shit now they have shut there holes because sony screwed them again. You understand that Crystal?
The ps2 a more powerfull system then the xbox? Who the hell ever said that? The ps2 was way more successfull, but definatly not more powerfull.. im pretty sure everyone knew that from day one. And even if they didnt they should realise a system comming out a later date, means there s agood chance there is better hardware.
"The ps2 a more powerfull system then the xbox? Who the hell ever said that?" Sony and the sony fanboys said that, which is why I know Sony is nothing but over-hyped bullshit.
Specifications can be spun by anyone but the Uber nerds, which I am not. And specifications don't mean much if you don't use it properly anyways Crystal. Like I said b4, my comments were from 4 months ago before gaystation fan boys LOST the war. It sounds like noone broke the news to you yet?...sony sucks 360 rules, suck it down crystal.
Um.. im a 360 owner... dont own a ps3.. just stating facts. Why do you go around calling people fan boys, when its obvious thats all you are? You dont have to be a super nerd.. You can just take microsofts word for it, the ps3 is more powerfull.
Of course your a sony fanboy, that part is obviouse. Im guessing u replied to a 4 month old comment cuz u thought I would let ur bullshit pass. Sorry. And I dont take anyones word for anything, let alone sony. I dont care what microsoft says about the ps3, I know 360 is better because I have played games on both systems. And yes u do have to be a super nerd to understand console specs lol.
If I was a sony fanboy, I would own a psp and a ps3, not a DS and an xbox 360. It would be nice to have a blu ray drive, but i cant afford a system that expensive. Buying a lower tech system that uses cheap parts like the 360 has saved me alot of money. The psp never interested me at all. I am a retro gamer, and hardly a fanboy of anything. anything except maybe the NES.
How about the both of you just build a PC that will blow the shit outta both of them. And for the record, mookixox you are the biggiest upstuck fanboy i ever saw hahaha
btw sega did use over 128 colours it could do like 256 colours in screen even al its colours considering the amount of memory to load colours from its memory wich was damn small in the genesis from the 1500+ 256 could be possible on a sega cd but not proven.graphically Gunstar above any tg16 game or tduo game and thats just a hard fast well alien soldier matches up to the neo in terms of animation.
These comments are taking me back to 4th grade...glad to see there are still people fighting the good fight between SNES, Genesis, and TurboGrafX. Er, not glad, sad is the word I was looking for.
Anyway, hilarious how they compared that near unplayable yet 16-bit game to a first wave NES game that is still pretty fun today, albeit very rudimentary.
streets of rage etc all the classics over any TG/duo/Pc/turbohyperx/ultragraphx man how many names do theyre systems have.Good looking games like sapphire will cost you life and theyre not worth it,for the same price a great saturn with imports wich is much better.the tg16 lookes and sounded from decent to worse but glad there is VC to check them out.Sega genesis had processing power up to the max it could be overcloced at 13/14 mhz or with bypassing the z80 wich some games did.
And that why i sold my Duo it had like 4 games that where good i didnt cost your life and the graphics where still 8 bit,i had sapphire great music great graphics more colours but hell it didnt look like Tf4,Lords of thunder no comment great game also like the sega cd one,Dracula X zzzzzzzzzz boring dont like it but looked oke. Many sega cd/genesis games had tone of more things going on like more animations scaling etc etc that was possible due its processor and not just ramming colours.
Back in the 1990's, many video game companies had their consoles fail, not because they were 'bad machines,' but because the companies kept on over-emphasizing the power of their console, instead of talking about the actual type of GAMES avaliable for their console.
In the end, any video game console, is only as good as the quality games, which are available to play on it, no matter how 'powerful' the machine is supposed to be.
This was an early 16-bit home video game system; It could've been the first if I remember correctly. The problem with this was it was way too expensive and NES was on cloud 9 at the time so nobody paid it any attention.I knew one person that had this back in the late 80's and Bonk's Adventure was great. Those little gamecards were cool too.
Well it wasn't true 16 bit. It was 8+8 bit. That sounds retarded, but a rep from Hudson explains it in a podcast I was listening to the other day. He also talks about a new Bonk game possibly in the works. If you want to check it out, it's called Retroforce Go! and it's Episode 34.
It was a 16bit system in that it had a 16bit video processor. It didn't have two 8bit processors and I'm glade it didn't. Multi-processor setups are a biatch to optimize for these older CPUs. It uses one 8bit 7.15mhz cpu. It holds its own.
i still have this system and a bunch of games. good grafx and lots of good music. the controllers cool too cos its got turbo switches. another great feature is that you can connect a cd player in the back and play cd games. what sux is that there was one controller port so you had to buy extra shit.
Lol

What a cheap shot. Anyone with a brain can tell you the TG16 was more capable than the NES, but using an early Black Box game for comparison? Cheap.
Also I count 6 colors I can make out vs. 3. That's 2x, not almost 10x.
I'm not a Nintendo fanboy, but I sure do hate lousy advertisement.

Comparing the NES to the Turbografx-16 is like comparing SNES to the 32x.
32x = Not a 32-bit console
Turbografx-16 = Not a 16-bit console.
Both consoles above just output more color.

alafercua 2 years ago
Um.. you do realize that the ps3 has greater capabilities then the 360 correct? I dont own a ps3, i am a proud 360 owner.. but still the ps3 is a stronger system.. seems your the only crying fanboy.
SwordOfCrystalis 2 years ago
I don't give a fuck what the claims are, I heard ps2 was so much more powerful then the xbox and it still got prison raped. Im not crying about anything, I left that comment 4 months ago when gaystation fans were still talkin shit now they have shut there holes because sony screwed them again. You understand that Crystal?
mookixox 2 years ago
The ps2 a more powerfull system then the xbox? Who the hell ever said that? The ps2 was way more successfull, but definatly not more powerfull.. im pretty sure everyone knew that from day one. And even if they didnt they should realise a system comming out a later date, means there s agood chance there is better hardware.
SwordOfCrystalis 2 years ago
"The ps2 a more powerfull system then the xbox? Who the hell ever said that?" Sony and the sony fanboys said that, which is why I know Sony is nothing but over-hyped bullshit.
mookixox 2 years ago
Thats why you dont read opinoins, you read technical specifications. In which case the ps3 is a more powerfull system.
SwordOfCrystalis 2 years ago
Specifications can be spun by anyone but the Uber nerds, which I am not. And specifications don't mean much if you don't use it properly anyways Crystal. Like I said b4, my comments were from 4 months ago before gaystation fan boys LOST the war. It sounds like noone broke the news to you yet?...sony sucks 360 rules, suck it down crystal.
mookixox 2 years ago
Um.. im a 360 owner... dont own a ps3.. just stating facts. Why do you go around calling people fan boys, when its obvious thats all you are? You dont have to be a super nerd.. You can just take microsofts word for it, the ps3 is more powerfull.
SwordOfCrystalis 2 years ago
Of course your a sony fanboy, that part is obviouse. Im guessing u replied to a 4 month old comment cuz u thought I would let ur bullshit pass. Sorry. And I dont take anyones word for anything, let alone sony. I dont care what microsoft says about the ps3, I know 360 is better because I have played games on both systems. And yes u do have to be a super nerd to understand console specs lol.
mookixox 2 years ago
If I was a sony fanboy, I would own a psp and a ps3, not a DS and an xbox 360. It would be nice to have a blu ray drive, but i cant afford a system that expensive. Buying a lower tech system that uses cheap parts like the 360 has saved me alot of money. The psp never interested me at all. I am a retro gamer, and hardly a fanboy of anything. anything except maybe the NES.
SwordOfCrystalis 2 years ago

JMames 3 years ago 2
If yoy pay $700 for a Duo, man thats a BAD burn. anything over $250 is robbery.

To bad the game they showed to Nintendo's Kung Fu sucks ass...
TwighlightMist 3 years ago
Yes but TG-16 had le gasp 8-bit CPU Genesis was completely 16-bit and like SNES could do 2.5D *cough, cough* Vectorman *Cough, cough*
You are an NEC fanboy,it's getting on everybody else nerves enough with the tech blasphemy
and SNES beat this system out and made it look like nothing happened in Japan.
What was the point of tech crap when le gasp all the real games went to SEGA and Nintendo's offerings
Turbo DUo sucked 2/3 of the world agree only Anti-N64,Anti-2D SEGA land disagree

streets of rage etc all the classics over any TG/duo/Pc/turbohyperx/ultragraphx man how many names do theyre systems have.Good looking games like sapphire will cost you life and theyre not worth it,for the same price a great saturn with imports wich is much better.the tg16 lookes and sounded from decent to worse but glad there is VC to check them out.Sega genesis had processing power up to the max it could be overcloced at 13/14 mhz or with bypassing the z80 wich some games did.
aryinc 3 years ago

Nice TV Ad for 'China Warrior,' by the way.

WAR TG16. I still play my Turbo Duo. Good stuff.

This was an early 16-bit home video game system; It could've been the first if I remember correctly. The problem with this was it was way too expensive and NES was on cloud 9 at the time so nobody paid it any attention.I knew one person that had this back in the late 80's and Bonk's Adventure was great. Those little gamecards were cool too.
dtrks80 4 years ago
Well it wasn't true 16 bit. It was 8+8 bit. That sounds retarded, but a rep from Hudson explains it in a podcast I was listening to the other day. He also talks about a new Bonk game possibly in the works. If you want to check it out, it's called Retroforce Go! and it's Episode 34.
TravisOnPhonics 3 years ago
It was a 16bit system in that it had a 16bit video processor. It didn't have two 8bit processors and I'm glade it didn't. Multi-processor setups are a biatch to optimize for these older CPUs. It uses one 8bit 7.15mhz cpu. It holds its own.

idiots you might not know it but intelleivsion was the first 16 bit console but they did not knoe hoe to use all those colors and it sucked

Gameplay is more important than graphics. If you like graphics more than gameplay, then go watch some movies.
1983parrothead 4 years ago 5
i still have this system and a bunch of games. good grafx and lots of good music. the controllers cool too cos its got turbo switches. another great feature is that you can connect a cd player in the back and play cd games. what sux is that there was one controller port so you had to buy extra shit.
