When I was little I imagined Darth Vader and the Emperor becoming what they were because of their usage of the Dark Side. I thought the dark side corrupts and disfigures you the more you use it (as well as gain incredible power).

I had no clue George Lucas had a different interpretation for the movie that would later make me hate star wars. Apparently Darth Vader joined the dark side because he thought he was helping people and only later (this scene) realizes he was wrong. Not that there was-
