I recently ran into someone whom was contemplating purchasing an '00 Intrepid with the 2.7...I said, "Dude...You'd better YouTube with "Chrysler 2.7L V6" in the header box!"...He sure backed out of that car deal! Thanks, YouTubers...
Its a 2.7 v6 that's your problem. the Chrysler/dodge 2.7L v6 is the worse motor in the world. luckily it was only the cam sensor. these motors are 100% junk, when it starts smoking out the exhaust either get rid of the car, or swap the motor out with a better Chrysler/dodge motor. these motors tend to die really quickly even if you properly care for them.
@moldymac you are lucky, my friend did the same but the engine died within 40k miles, he treated that thing like gold. all the time replacing oil even before its time, constant tune ups, the works and she still let go. had a bad rod knock and eventually put it out the side of the motor, and before it let go cylinder 3 and 4 had almost no compression, had a slight mixing of the fluids as well. it was horrid, and dodge would not cover it. he never drove it hard. he had all service papers even.
I had a 2005 Sebring Touring Limited. Blew a connecting rod at 102k among other things. The Sebring Coupes that had the 3.0L Mitsubishi engine lasted a lot longer.
@SheWhoSavesThEarth they dont have a distributor..cant you see the coil on plug ignition system right in front of you....like the owner said the cam sensor went...which is typical for the 2.4 and 2.7 so no matter what engine you cant escape that
@ toyotacooper , all my chryslers have made it well over 100,000 miles without major issues , and very few minor ones , on the other hand all our toyotas have been pains , i had to get rid of the awful corolla it was costing me so much to keep it running , it wasnt abused either , the highlander also just keeps having issues , from alternators to ac parts , its jsut a hassle dear god and its under 80,000 miles
Mine use to only do it when it was cold, never did it once in the summer. If you let it sit for a few minutes after it did this crap it would run fine afterwords. The check engine light would never come on for this.
@moldymac same with mine....I think I left the house when it was 35 degrees and the car shut off in the middle of a main road....but i pushed it into work, and after I got off, I let it run for thirty minutes and drove home no problem...the only thing with me was it would start every nine or ten hours
@moldymac Sure, sound advice, but what do you do when these damn things won't even start , whats the point of caring for them .....CHRYSLER IS SHENANIGANS , maybe not in the past idk but certainly NOW !!!1
shut the fuck up dude.... omg we drive only Chryslers and one Toyota , the Chryslers haven't not been in the shop any where near as many times as the Toyota has and its newer then all of them
i think a maf sensor may be the issue, in alot of subaru 2.5l engines this was the symptom and that was the fix if the vehicle was dealer maintained you know good oil is being used. don't tust a quick lube, i saw on 20/20 that 87% of quicklubes use the wrong viscosity oil.or even recycled.so keep your eyes on that too. engine sludge should only occur wher coolant enters the crankcase or when oil is left overtime without proper maintenance.my 2002 has 193000 kms and runs like a mother f8cker.
ok that right there is most likely caused by a bad camshaft sensor.. i have a 99 intrepid with 91k with no problems.. and for people thinking the 2.7 is a bad design.. how many 3.2l and 3.5l engines have this problem? there are the same basic design only difference is the 2.7l has smaller bore and stroke and dohc. one small problem though is they used nylon cam gears in all of the motors.. the gears wear and give a loose chain a chance to rub the water pump at around 60k. i'm an autotech student
If the transmission has not been serviced, then this is a definite way of your car telling you that it needs attention now.
Basically, get a trustworthy and experienced transmission technician to check things out.
At the very least, you will need a power flush of the transmission and a change of the trans fluid filter. Oh, and make sure the tech uses only Chrysler spec fluid, specifically Chrysler ATF+4.
NEVER use Dexron or Mercon, EVER. Not even with additives that modify these fluids.
Oh, also this problem only happens in the winter, and if you let it sit until it warms up and then shut it off and turn it back on it's fine. It's probably done this 7 or 8 times in 4 years, but when it does do it, your car is un driveable!
The 2.7 might be the worst engine ever built! Just look at ebay all the 2.7 litre equipped vehicles on there with blown engines! It's shocking Chrysler has gotten away with it!
The 2.7 has notourious problems with poor crankcase ventilation, causing sludge and then f'ing the motor. If the oil is changed every 3k, you can aviod *that* particular problem. It's a nice motor when it works...
Yeah, he switched to synthetic recently because of the reported problems with the engine. In the top of the engine, around the chains, it looks pretty clean, so hopefully it will be OK.
not really. expecting just because "you" haven't had problems is what is dumb to say.
there is a documented history of excessive premature failure with 2.7L engines and even most die hard Chrysler enthusiests will even admit they're garbage. defectively designed timing chain tensioner prone to snap and cause the interference engine to self destruct, sludge regardless of oil changes every 3,000 miles, internal coolant leaks from defects in design/assembly. it's more than "can jsut happen"
well i just looked at that web site and. I have a Dodge Stratus 2.7L 2002. And I'm WAAAAAAAAY over 70.000Miles more like 112.000Miles and i have had NO problems with the engine' NEVER! the only thing i have to get fixed is the oil pan from backing up over a rock, that i didn't see. that is all. very little crack but barely leaking, the pan just looks dirty of oil. i still punch it, in Low gear, not full throttle just enough to get up to 6Grand
so what, and just because "you" haven't had problems makes them a wonderful engine?
there was also once a hard drive company from india that made the worst hard drives in history, I have a couple that still work!! would I go around like an idiot and brag about it or feel good about trusting something that can fail at any time, no.
you're probably not even the original owner although you'll probably claim you are and I bet the engines already been replaced prematurely more than likely.

all 2.7's are garbage they all do something bizzare is the engine light on? if its not take the entire throttle body off. the pcv valve might be clogged and is spewing oil into your intake air filter box. check for that

@madmax2069 I heard all the stories about these engines. Been running synthetic with a change every 3k to prevent the dreaded sludge problem.

sounds like my 98 sebring.a common prob with those is the distributor.sucky design
SheWhoSavesThEarth 1 year ago
@SheWhoSavesThEarth It was actually the Cam sensor. These engines don't use a distributer, it has one coil for each spark plug controlled by the PCM.
moldymac 1 year ago
@SheWhoSavesThEarth they dont have a distributor..cant you see the coil on plug ignition system right in front of you....like the owner said the cam sensor went...which is typical for the 2.4 and 2.7 so no matter what engine you cant escape that

@RalphdaCuban only if you dont change your oil often..and use synthetic oil

was that a expensive fix?
blingmow101 2 years ago
@blingmow101 not too bad, part was around $75. Been almost 2 years since I replaced the cam sensor, problem has not come back.
moldymac 1 year ago
hey thats classic symptom of a TPS (throtle position sensor) pretty common problem on those 2.7L
RalphdaCuban 2 years ago
So far the problem has not returned after a cam sensor (threw a code a while back). But if it does happen again I'll give that a shot.

LynolsOffice 3 years ago
Not always.
There are reports of people who changed oil every 3,000 miles but still had the sludge in their 2.7L Chrysler engines.
Good maintenance does nothing to alleviate problems caused by a bad design.
Problems: crankcase ventilation problems, narrow oil passageways, insufficient sump capacity, and head gasket defects.
About the best thing to do with the 2.7: use only synthetic oil.
Watcher3223 3 years ago
Yeah, he switched to synthetic recently because of the reported problems with the engine. In the top of the engine, around the chains, it looks pretty clean, so hopefully it will be OK.
