  • This would have been a decent product years ago, but it's obsolescent now. Christmas tree fires just aren't very common. Back when my parents were kids, they had actual lit candles on the tree. And in the 1970s when I was little, electric Christmas lights were at least 7 watts per bulb and put out quite a bit of heat. But with the super low-wattage LED Christmas lights becoming more popular and affordable these days, Christmas tree fires will be a thing of the past.

  • What happens when you pour water all over an electrical fire?

  • so bulletball didn't make it?

  • And why is he wearing his fireman shit?

  • @junkyturd Because it looks faithful?

  • @junkyturd

Well, it's to display his profession (which is relevant to the nature of the product) and bolster his credibility. I suppose he could've just said "I'm a fireman", but you see him with his gear on, then you know he's telling the truth and he doesn't have to worry about people missing that point. Face it, too many viewers just don't pay attention.

  • I seen a tragedy when you had 20 kids!

  • "... has struggled for years to support his large family..." wear a condom you stupid fuck.

  • I had no idea dry scotch pine trees were that dangerous. it's like decorating your living room with grenades, but the pins will sometimes fall off causing them to detonate and some random dude from a bomb squad gets touched by the situation and invents something to keep the pins in place so you can take the weight of stupidity off your shoulders

  • aquamerfish; YAAAAAA he is a bitch and a thief the person who invented this, after a long legal fight is spent, i was there to witness this thief steal this invention he didnt pay attention to me I WAS there THIEF i HOPE YOUR 6 CHILDREN KNOW THEIR FATHER IS A LIE A FRAUD!!!!!

  • @troop1987 Who is "us"?

  • Ok this may be the most stupid invention but he and his family got 11 million at my expense my husband invented it and this a**h**** stole it. I just want to say to him "you know what u did,may GOD have mercy on your soul."

  • Ok this may be the most stupid invention but he and his family got 11 million at my expense my husband invented it and this a**h**** stole it.

  • Fucking Paranoid Americans...!!!! dont want a fire.. Dont keep a fuking Tree right next to a God dam FirePlace!!!! /:I

  • So... what have we learned here? If you want to win American Inventor, you throw down some dead baby sob story, wear a public servant uniform, and talk about how broke you are and how you can hardly make ends meet with your 23 kids.

  • @invis648 Your pathetic. As an American Soldier people who put their lives on the line for everyone else, including people we don't even though so that others can enjoy their families and everyday freedoms do not get payed hardly enough to live on. Everytime he goes into a burning building to save someone's life who he doesn't even says a lot about someone. Risking his life to possibly give someone a second chance at theirs. And he does it for very little pay especially when you have a family.

  • retard judges

  • what if fire is in the summer???

  • TV producers have become so fucking corny I can't watch this bullshit cynical TV format crap anymore. There are so many better producers who are just amateurs on Youtube.

  • Unfortunately you also have YouTubers riding on the reality show wave and get millions of views from daily home videos just following their lives.

Self-contained videos about a specific subject are more meaningful.

  • but seriously, if the light decoration is so dangerous and set on fire easily, just DON't have that damn light ! use shinny things ! Why put a danger at home, and put something there to "guard" the danger ? just don't have it at all !

  • it looks so stupid. How did this win? oh yeah - it is america!

  • "This is how I dress to come to a situation like that" ROFL

  • What kind of a fireman is Greg he is going to use pressured water on an electrical fire. Instead of the kids being burned to death they will just be electrified instead.

  • hahahahahaha that is funny shit

  • This guy was a firefighter with a big family that invented something to "save christmas" and starts crying every time.

An object that you buy maybe once to use during a few days during the year in houses of people that still care for christmas. Then you call it Guardian Angel...

Then you have a girl that came with something that probably most of women would want and a guy that created a build yourself toy that obviously makes kids brains work to create there own toy...

you see how to win now?

  • all of you are a bunch of idiots. you obviously dont know what its like to see people die on christmas.

  • Yeah, you got a point there... But the other people in this show are completely crazy... like the pet petter.. I mean WTF!? ... Who needs a robot to pet their pets!? Then you shouldn't have got yourself a pet in the first place..

  • Whuuut... And he was the winner!? ... I mean sure it was like an automated fire extinguisher that you mounted in the roof, cause then it will put out any fire in the room (any large fires, not candles) ... but this... Noo... I mean, the AMERICAN INVENTOR... and the winner is this small tree thingy which can save a couple of life on the Christmas...

  • Well it cant be any worse than... BULLETBALL!

  • Yea, sure it can save a few lives, but its not like one christmas eve you are sitting with your parents or your family and suddenly this happens, and if you are the only survivor? can you keep up with the pressure of loosing a family? this guy cant.

  • I dunno, I think watching my entire family burn alive in front of me would be pretty laced with pressure, don't you think?

  • @Ryfasol he didnt design the product he is a thief and a liar he doesnt even know the basics First Alert payed him ten million dollars the show gave him one million he didnt even think it up!! HE STOLE THE IDEA and more from US>

  • @troop1987 Man I got to say, if it was your idea how come you didn't get a patent on it? If there is no patent on it then it's free game. Cause if there is a patent on something then he would have been arrested on the spot. Pretty simple question that I have. I'm not saying you didn't create it first but there obviously wasn't a patent on it at the time.

  • Good idea.

    Bad everything else.

  • this show is bullshit and that's the most stupid invention i've ever seen in my life

  • Greg chavez lyk a mother fucking bastard without balls.puki mak dier ah

  • "i can visualize that lifeless baby" -george foreman

  • electric light ftw. europe!

  • i do belive he saw all that dead child thing but he wasn`t a firefighter then he was a constuction worker and he saw that on the TV

  • I think 50% of what his saying is just bullshit. Ofcourse every fire fighter have seen people die through out his / her life...but that thing about the dad carrying his dead child, it's so easy to come up with things like that just to winn

  • Water on christmas tree lights is a no-no. Also the fire would have to be present to trigger the plug...by that time the hose could be melted. The possibility of having portions of the fire still burning after the water tank is drained is highly likely. The best solution is to get a flame retardant tree, or place a fire detector nearby and have a CO2 fire extinguisher handy just in case.

  • I´m a polymer engineer and this idea is crap. I worked with UL projects and the best thing to do here is to use a fire retardant in spray form. Spray the damn tree with it and end of story.

  • bitch played the dead baby card

  • werd. that's dirty.

  • lol, bastard, now I'm tearing up AND laughing at the same time.........I think the uniform is WAY overboard, but it's a HUGE symbol.......he tears up good......

  • llooool hahha nice coment

  • best comment ever posted on youtube

  • thats already been done tho its called sprinklers

  • yeah, because everone can install sprinklers in their homes. Then you would also need to install pipes across you ceiling. It would cost way too much.

  • this is smaller and its nice , also cheap . and its easy! also with sprinklers the whole room will get destroyed

  • This would be a good thing to test in a house that is meant to be burnt down for fire education purposes. One issue that I could see would be water would not be delivered on time. The fire would spread too quickly before 150 degree temps could activate the spray nossle. One idea could be to have the nossle digitally controlled so a smoke alarm within the tree could activate the spray nossle. The key is fire suppression before flash point occures. Nice idea, but I would use LED lights myself...

  • I am an engineer. This is a gopd idea, but implemented incorrectly. Why? For one, you're going to spray water all over an electric device that may or may not have a short. Why doesn't this thing use a chemical fire suppressant, like the ones used in real fire extinguishers? Not only would this retard the fire much more quickly, it could possibly save the presents under the tree!

I say go back to firefighting, let the scientists and engineers solve the problems.

  • pity you didn't come up with the idea, or anyone else

i say go back to not posting stupid comments ;]

  • its a great idead that it uses some kind of chemikals but how will they go all the way down from the tree i say this is more of a delay/alarm system so you can gtf out still

hes working whit first alert engnnies know.....so yeah theyll figure someting out lol

  • i thought on myth busters they found out that a tree would not set on fire from too many lights

  • the bulbs dont get hot enough to make combustion. but a short circuiting wire and a very dry tree can create disaster

  • Where can I find Grey's final invention show?

    Thanks~

  • He has a good idea...and a hell of a first person inspiration. This is one of those things that, once 10 million people have this on their trees, you'll be thinking you should have thought of it. And he'll be making runs between Starbucks in his Ferrari.

  • i agree but it's only useful for one month of the year at the most, i dont think it deserves to win in my opinion, which it did i think.

  • yeah but that one day that ur xmas tree catches on fire can claim ur life and ur house right before xmas

  • then id rather have something protect my house

  • he is a complete actor!!!! he can make more money in movies. btw stop crying on ur family and kids back.... c`mooooooon

  • I don't know... if it really works and puts out the fire in a short time span. I think it's great. A smoke alarm would have to wait say 5 seconds for smoke to reach it. In the video, by that time, the whole damn tree is on fire. Plus a smoke alarm isn't always very reliable and it doesn't exactly put the fire out.

  • Did he want to explain an invention or need psychology? This is the worst invention I have ever seen whether or not it won. Here's a better invention - a guardian angel smoke alarm WOW just shat on his idea

  • wow are you an idiot

  • I don't know if this will work, if the plug is touching the water it won't melt: try melting a hole through a bottle filled with water. And if it isn't touching the water then it wouldn't be under pressure.

  • Plus I don't think that 2 gallons of water will take the fire out if it's just dropped...also wouldn't the fire have to be distributed?

  • that 2 gallons is pressurized so when it comes out of the nozzle underneath of the angel it will come out as a spray and not like you just dropped a bucket.

  • so corny

  • That's not an invention. It's a drawing.

    No R & D.

    No prototype.

Absolutely no evidence that it will ever work.

    No safety testing.

Peter Jones is a hypocrite - if someone presented him with that on the British series he would have told him to f. off and come back with an actual invention.

  • He won so nerrrr. Sozzz. :)

  • I know he did - it was obvious from the start what with all the crying and stories.

It's a sad lookout for humanity... ...ah well.

  • Yessss, but thats what makes American Inventor special... :S I thinkkkk

But still, It's a clever invention, and I bet you coulden't top that,

  • i like the HT race cars more cause you can design EVERYTHING AND PLAY IT AS A VEHICLE.. I can even design Bin Laden at the top of a UFO with wheels

  • i like the HT race cars more cause you can design EVERYTHING AND PLAY IT AS A VEHICLE.. I can even design Bin Laden at the top of a UFO with wheels

  • he so sweet, bless him

  • water and electricity just gives you a shock- just dont touch it while the waters on... =P simple as lol

  • that guy who says no, what does he want him to do??? bring a christmas tree in with him and set fire to it in the studio?

  • because of the way he designed it (the water in a seperate pressurized tank) it could be replaced with a different chemical, say, a co2 or powder extinguisher, which would put out the fire just as well, but without the water. Another good thing would be a heat sensor that trips the unit if there are unusually large spikes in ambient temp (say, 70f-100+f in half a second like it would with a fire)

  • Water, plus mains elecricity used to power christmas tre lights...YES IT DOES!

  • Right, This product, seems OK.

But won't the fact that its throwing water on an electrical device, produce another fire?

    I'm gettin very confused.

  • water + electricity doesnt produce fire...

  • wifeys hot

  • its a good idea with a very warming presentation but isn´t it better to invent a product that works not only on christmas but all year?? O_o

  • sound slike a gud idea, but could he not of made a slightly better looking picture for his presentation, it looks like a child drew it, just a thought

  • Its a real heart warming presentation

but where is the actual product??

  • wow in myhtbusters they put a whole bunch of lights and the tree didnt caught on fire!!! rip off?

  • the guy that said no is gonna die in a christmas tree fire...

  • good idea great invention can save life

  • Hmmm...quite a choice. Switch the tree lights off at night or leave them on to make the tree look pretty (although everyone is too asleep to appreciate it) and risk a house fire. Interesting invention idea, but I think it is ultimately a bit redundant. Even if you do want to leave the lights on all night, you can get LED-based lights, which use 90% less electricity, dont generate heat and are infinitely safer.

  • It doesn't matter considering a lot of people are stupid and a lot of people don't really think about that kind of stuff, this is for those people.

  • I guess so. Things must be different in the US, but every fire department and fire-safety / accident-prevention organisation here in the UK advocates switching off Christmas tree lights before going to bed, as does the government and even manufacturers of fire extinguishers. There is no need for a special gadget to replace common sense and escape the responsibility of basic fire prevention.

  • I am a mechanical engineer. The basic rule when designing something is: if something isn't inherently safe, then it isn't safe. Relying on "common sense" always ends in disaster, since someone will always do it wrong.

  • For all-out safety, one would have to idiot-proof everything. There HAS to be a point where some measure of responsibility is needed. Anyone stupid enough to leave hot xmas tree lights on overnight and unattended is hardly going to be smart enough to know to buy this device, assuming it ever comes on the market. Education and safety-awareness is what is really needed.

  • WRONG. When you sell a product to someone, it should be inherently safe. For example, selling filament bulbs that are intended to hang beside combustible material doesn't make a lot of sense to me, regardless of whether or not it is supervised. I would assume that the manufacturers of filament christmas tree bulbs are liable to being sued if someone burns their house down with them.

  • Even products designed to be safe can be dangerous if misused or in a careless fashion. For example, people have died from slipping on a rug placed on a polished floor. Where does one draw the line between designing a product to be safe and the personal responsibility of the consumer to use that product safely and in such a way that will not create a hazard?

  • very good product, bravo

  • the old guy at the end is crazy (not the british guy)

  • i love u gregggg u rockkkkkkk

  • greg is amazing..he had an amazing pitch -and to answer your question:why dont u just unplug your tree..well who wants to unplug there tree of chirstmas eve?? no one..amazing invention!!! knew he was gonna win from the beginning!

  • Let me answer you question, even though you already answered it. No one stupid. I'm all fr the christmas spirit, but I unplug my tree anytime I'm not at home or awake because I want to ****ing live to see Christmas day, not burn in a fire cause I was too lazy to unplug the tree.

  • knew greg was going to win...but what i dont understand is that why dont you just save yourself some money and unplug the christmas tree?

ah well, ill never understand christians

  • Greg had an amazing product and his passion for it was amazing! I cant wait to see this on shelves and I hope his 6 children turn out as amazing as him!

  • he ended up winning the whole thing

  • i would buy that!!

  • Congrats Greg on the win I can't wait to see this product put to market because I think it will save a lot of lives.

  • the real service here is that people are now more educated on the risks of burning your house down with a dead tree.

  • he won..congrats to him and hope it all works out!

  • Nice going !, you won the competition about a minute ago. A great product that will sell millions around the world, and save many lives.

  • Enjoyed seeing you be one of the top 3. Look Forward to Seeing you Win as #1 !!!

    Jean House

  • I REALLY hope this guy wins. He has a great product.

  • "...other than my family it would be the greatest thing that I could ever do." We are so proud of you Greg. Have a great day tomorrow-get some sleep!

    Brian

  • My name is Ron and I would like to help. I currently have a pantent pending for the same product. I have been working on it for about 7 years now. I would love to help!!!!! How can I contact someone or help in any way.

  • this is a good invention, most people are lazy asses or looses track of time and dont realize how much water a live tree actually consumes, this guy should go all the way

  • I just read this on a website: "A Christmas tree which is well cared for will remain fresh and will not catch fire unless a strong flame supported by inflamable material is placed under the tree. In fact, there were examples of houses which burned completely while having a real Christmas tree which did not even catch fire." I'd rather water my tree than buy a fire extinguisher for it and store it all year.

  • good invention! Coming from an Engineers perspective, there are a few things I would do/add to this. I forwarded the info onto your cousin Anne that I went to ISU with! Tell her to check her myspace.

    Good luck!

  • Some suggested design changes:

The gift/present box should hold a water compressor and storage tank, so that it can fill itself at the beginning of the season, and be easily drained at the end for safer storage.

Also, have the box act as a sort of surge protector that the tree lights can plug in to. When the system is triggered, have the box kill the power to the lights so that there won't be any potentially nasty electricity+water problems.

  • i think its the best invention ever! and im not saying that becasue i know him. i'm saying it becasue i had a nightmare about it!

  • I think its the best too and since you know him if you ever talk to him let him know that i would buy this product the first day i see it on the shelves this guy is a damn genius all the other ideas will fade over time this won't

  • VOTING is on JULY 25th

    so the finalists are:

Ricky DeRennaux (HT Custom Build Racers)

Greg Chavez (fire extinguisher for a Christmas tree)

David Moeller and Craig Forest (The Claw - for hanging a bike)

Elaine Cato (The Six-in-One Backless Bra)

George and Denise Tucker (EZT4U - coffeemaker basket for making tea)

Joe and Mike Miller (Wrap Away - kitchen wrap storage)

All are cool. But for me RICKY and his HT RACERS is the winning invention and an entire new line of products.

  • 3M makes a liquid for putting out fires that isn't conductive. I don't know the exact name, but it was talked about a bit around 2004, as you could use it in a business where you'd have sensitive computers. It's supposed to be safe for people, too.

  • one thing i was wondering was the whole water and exposed electrical wires coming in contact with eachother, but then again who is gonna wanna get close to the tree when its burning to be in danger of that. But it could still put out or weaken the fire i imagine. Other than that this is a great idea and i could see it selling.

  • this was already invented its called smoke detetctor duduh!

  • smoke detector doesn't put out fires smart ace.

  • THIS INVENTION IS USELSS!!! PEOPLE TURN OFF THERE LIGHTS AT NIGHT, PLUS EVERYONE IS STARTING TO USE L.E.D. LIGHTS SO THERES NOT EVEN A RISK OF FIRES!!! This guy go through cause he's super passionate.

  • How is there not a risk of fire with LEDS? Have you heard of an electrical fire? From a short circuit? Also, I never turn the christmas lights off at night... Just because you do doesn't mean everyone does.

  • You should, its called conserving energy! Todays 777 its the main message thats going on today!! Plus why leave them on when everyone is asleep? Yes there is the possible of short circuit but with the new LED lights the risk is very low.

  • I have to agree. There is probably about as much chance of a fire being caused by a faulty power lead on a kettle as a set of LED christmas tree lights, but we don't see the need for extinguisher devices on kettles.

  • i think they should of chosen an invention that would *actually* be used by everyone, i'm never concerened about my christmas tree cause i turn off lights and i dont have to worry 1 bit about it, i'm more worried about a fire starting from the furnace during that time of the year..

  • I love the idea. Someone should step forward and make it happen with you.

    Edward Philipp InspiredByPeopledotcom

  • i love it why not use it in everyones house hold??

  • Another fire fighter here to save lives... Please take a moment to view the video response as it relates to 'SAFETY in ACTION' ...learn to fight the FIRE... and NOT the HOSE! • I found this on Doug Hall's blog. "Regarding the Christmas Tree fire extinguisher... Not a wise choice. It's been patented - in numerous forms - a number of times. I know because years ago I helped design one for a client....(there I go .. can't get away from sharing my past experiences)."

  • Yes, there's been some chatter about what appears to be potential patent conflicts. All I can say is that there is a lot more to the story about Greg's invention and it's own unique, patentable features and methods than the show might suggest. He's been working on this for many years. Tune in to the upcoming episodes and find out...I think you'll be surprised when you actually see the product.

  • instead of water, it should be some special foam... that would work great!

  • but the foam wont be able to travel throught the tree because it is too puffy. Water is a liquid so it can menuever through almost anything

  • sprinkler system?

  • pretty kickass idea, i woul dthink a heat sensor would work better, because it gives a more instant responce.

  • It's a good idea. I'm not sure if it would work due to the conical shape of a tree, but it's certainly worth investing some time and money.

  • I would buy it in an instant!!!

  • wow, nice idea but it needs more research... update please

  • I'd buy it.

  • i would buy it even though i am jewish

  • i'd definitely buy it once i see it working.

  • Haylon or co2 would be better-pressurizing water would be tough and I don't think water is great for electrical fires

  • The use of water is a good idea, because after the holiday season, you can depressurize the system and store it. Next year, fill it up with water and repressurize it. I do agree with you that water + electricity is not good, but I once the tree is dowsed in water, it will deter the almost instant ignition.

  • So Jeff, keep us up to date. I see that Greg was chosen to go on, what happens next?

  • that was really touching, great presentation.

  • No, I am Greg's brother...

  • i for one say it is an amazing invention. I would definately buy it to keep my home safe.

  • Invention of the night.

  • I'd buy it.

  • I LOL'd at "I can visualize that lifeless baby..". Does this make me a bad person? Rofl.

  • wow that was a really fast fire

  • Wow! Great Idea! Way to go Greg! Now the whole world will know:1) How brilliant the Chavez Clan is, and 2) That "Chavez" is not pronounced with an "sh" sound. Ha Ha.

  • thanks for your support, dulcetdreamx3!

  • this was my favorite invention, it's a GREAT idea and can really save lives. and the firefighters seems like such a nice guy. i would buy it.

  • Wow! Good looking guy! Does that make me gay?

    Hope he wins.
