  • General Pinochet saved Chile from Communism and he had no choice. The general and the people were right in putting the Communist out! General Pinochet was a great man and leader, Chile economy is still receiving positive affects from his actions!!!

  • Nixon: Why so serious?

  • Press 5 repeatedly.

    OMG OMG OMG OMG

  • what program did you use to make the image on the video?

  • denicracy can be overated. look at south africa

  • This guy is full of shit. Pinochet was a pussy-cat compared to the commies. He saved Chile and designed a very good economic system and then gave up power.

  • @raderator buddy chill the fuck out, why don't you make your own video and link it to us instead of being a giant prick

  • We need our own Pinochet. But he should never legalize the commies again.

  • Allende was very popular, in my opinion he was the best president in the history of Chile.

because of Allende we are a rich country today, before he was elected we were like Haiti.

  • smart fellow

  • you have a talent for teaching IDK much about politics but i learn alot from your vids because it's from a General Human Being point of view not a democrat, capitalist, communist, etc. thank you. :)

  • "Unfortunately for America and unfortunately for Chile, this guy is one of those big time tyrants."

    Lolz xD

  • I admire you for covering this topic- but just mentioning Allende was Marxist (without distinguishing that his democratic/non-totalitarian approach is what scared Nixon so much), fixed prices/raised wages, and "clamped down on the media" is a little simplistic. It would be helpful to mention WHAT the U.S. was doing to manipulate the global economy against Chile's & what interests it had at stake - e.g. ITT & copper prices, Chase- and HOW U.S. policies supported Pinochet, e.g. the "Chicago boys."

  • The economy crashed again in 1982, 14% of the work force had to apply to govt. "make work" programs that paid less than minimum wage, while investors enjoyed a massive public bailout that ended up costing 10% of Chile's annual GDP.

By 1990 average wages were 10% less than they were in 1970, before Pinochet.

  • The "economic miracle" is nonsense. After Pinochet wages fell by 65% and unemployment exploded. Most of the profits came from extractive industries like copper, which Pinochet wisely renationalized after his first policies bombed. (Much of this growth came from capital investments the govt. made before him.)

Besides mining Chile also specialized in export agriculture (apples, grapes, etc) that were done usually unsustainably and had little value added.

  • i think it's also worth a mention that pinochet and the cia staged this coup on sep.11 and WHILST bombing and attacking the presidential palace, the widespread kidnappings were already happening. they had control of the university of chile. this was well-planned and all the brutality was intended. bodies piled up and they later transformed the national stadium of chile into one of eighty of the detention centers/torture chambers in santiago alone. so don't you dare (pepe) say it was worth it.

  • You _think_ they would've been worse? I guess human rights violations aren't a big deal after all. I had it all wrong. Thanks, pepe.

  • @noxure I don't mean to nitpick...but you misspelled Libya, Yemen and Syria.

    Just throwing it out there.

  • thanks.! Great Video.. easy to understand

  • I agree with you trying your hand at philosophy. :D

  • Great vids! You should definately do philosophy.

  • more information about Latin History and how it relates to America history

  • final exam in 3 hours.... i think you just saved my grade. awesome! saw you on TED too.... keep up the good work :)

  • @BitterBurst If you are interested in the subject, I'd recommend you a NOVA/PBS series called "The Bible's Buried Secrets". I think it's uploaded to youtube.

  • @BitterBurst No, he doesn't have to go there at all. His goal is to create a virtual school, and religion doesn't have any place in schools. Even if he started a series on ancient history which included a chapter on the "historical Jesus", I don't see how that would affect your beliefs at all. It would also be a general overview and wouldn't explain anything new. Sal is neither a historian nor an archaeologist.

  • @BitterBurst That's a brilliant idea. Talk about religion for no reason, alienate half of his subscribers.

How can Jesus and religion be the first things you think about when watching a video about the CIA and South American dictators? Chill out, seriously.

  • Whatever you think about what US and the USSR did back, put into the context of the cold war paranoia. The two superpowers were paranoid about each other. Thats over now. There is no USSR anymore and the US does not view the world anymore as black and white. It is very easy to criticizes now when the cold war is over, but these people lived under it and nuclear war was an option any day of the week.

  • Allende was a paid agent of the KGB. He got $50,000 in cash from them for his own personal use.

  • I love it how you put humor in your videos :)

  • haha

"I'll just put some unambiguous horns on him."

  • Great video again Sal! Can you possibly make WWII videos in the near future? Please keep the history videos coming.

  • The economy did not do well under pinochet... real wages stagnated all the years of his rule... wealth became much more concentrated at the top... calories consumed by the poor dropped during his rule... real wages of the poor dropped too... the economy had a silver lining in that the rich were able to consume much more... luxury shops expanded... but the consumption of the poor did not expand... public education was placed into private hands... a huge cause of yearly strikes even to this day.

  • @polvotierno real wages dropped because he stabilised and brought inflation under control. Prior to Pinochet, inflation was running at 3 digits. I agree he did nothing to fix the income inequality in Chile but to his credit he did reverse the damage done by Allende and his Labour policies. Even if it has had negative costs the country is bearing to this day.

  • But i guess your main point is right... USA has a long history (from the second half of XX century) of fellonies, conspiracies, and other rancid stuff ... you american citizens better stop your government of keep doing those things, or the world will still hating you with all the complications of that. I dont believe the Osama recent death (to me he was dead for years) , and i think USA is looking for another trouble, thats why they "kill" Osama. do something about it, for your own good.

  • @sicoticosandro hahaha, we can't even stop our government from trampling all over our freedoms. i doubt there is little we can do to stop them from doing it to everyone else in the rest of the world. I do certainly agree that they are responsible for some pretty rancid stuff at home and abroad, and should be stopped and heavily restrained in the amount of power they can exercise. Unfortunately, I doubt we'll see that as people are very complacent.

  • third: the bad situation of chile wasnt provoked because of "raisin salaries and fixing prices" . The elite in Chile has always being owner of almost all the business, they saw in Allende a threat to their guarantees (they were almost always the government too) so they started to hide basic grocery and started striking to create the enviroment for a coup (they sold their stuff, but only in black market): so the "allende marxist government" mith as a reason for the coup is false

  • Second: the involvement of USA it is clear in those episodes, with two reasons mainly, first, defend the USA transnationals and corporations just like today (the copper industry was in north american hands, he nationalize those mines, now CODELCO is the biggest state company in the whole world, with its profits going directly to the state treasure) and second to prevent a contamination of another south american countries of marxism and to perpetuate his influence on the region..

  • You got some facts wrong, majorily because you are North American, and you can only see the northamerican side of history, even if you are critic with it. First: Allende was not "ambiguous" he was in an ellectionary alliance with the marxist ,but he wasnt one, he only wanted to fight against big transnationals, an early cancer in those days, now a full terminal cancer in this society and specially in not develped countries, but he wasnt antidemocratic, or antipress.. first point.

  • Ahh Chile, the most important country and people in Latin America.

  • If you're doing South American history at the moment, don't forget the 1964 Brazilian coup d'état, Perón & Eva in Argentina between 1940s-1970s, Che Guevara in Cuba/Bolivia, and US involvement in the governments of Guatemala/Nicaragua/El Salvador.

  • YEA!!!! I FUCKIN LOVE HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • Great, now make a video about the 1954 CIA Coup in Guatemala... where it all began.

  • I can't really think of any pleasant chapters in world history.

  • So people priase a tyrant just becuase he got the econmy going hmm i reckon it wouln't be that hard once you kill off all a large protion of your population and have the biggest economic power aiding you at the same. Why they men live so long is simple to explain, He was one dam good killer he gets a A PLUS for tyrant of the century. Why do we as americans wonder why some poeple are willing to blow themselfs up,history can explain. Talk about the afghanistan war with soviet union

  • i agree with noxure. a good "middle eastern conflicts" overview would be really appropriate. might be deserving of its own playlist even, so much info.

  • Sal, look, I think it would be a great idea if you would do a piece on Yugoslavia, if you plan on getting to the 90s.

  • @AQGOAT24 true. But I believe it is the role of the khanacademy to actually do check what they publish. They are a great source of knowledge, IMHO, this kind of video plays against their quality levels and hence: reputation. What saddens me in the bottom line, is really that putting this in a US centric vision of the world the video/project looses reach.

  • Thank you yet again America for doing what seamed like a good idea at the time....

  • Good video as always. Though I have a minor criticism: it seems unnecessary to point out who is a good guy / bad guy. Just let the viewer decide from the facts your provide.

  • @hedonism13 I'd refer you to the wikipedia article on the matter:

Many here see Allende as a hero&martyr. many don't see Cuba as a failure but expl.

to many, 'marixst' isn't a bad word, 'capitalist' is, and thousands of death & life-long dictatorship isn't seen as a good price for economical success.

point: This video takes the negationist posture of ignoring the proved CIA strong involvement in all of LA especially at this period.

  • I had a lot of respect for the khan academy before seeing this one. let's see what the uruguayans think about it when they get it to spanish. But well, I guess this is the best you could do from a US point of view.

    (a bit disgusted, from argentina)

  • @xaiki

Just so I know, what was wrong with it? Like, what parts are incorrect?

  • @xaiki He did say at the beginning of the video, to be skeptical and to look things up yourself. He pretty much said not to take everything he says in history as 100% truth.

  • @xaiki you're not even chilean so why do you care?

  • What's next? Some Middle East?

Will you do the events that lead to the Iranian revolution 1979, followed by the Persian war with Iraq (1980-1988), followed by Iraq invading Kuwait and the US invading Iraq in 1990?

It's embarrassing how little is known about those conflicts, since they are quite relevant.

It might also be interesting to get your take on the Palestinian conflict, Lybia, Jemen, Syriah, the Jasmin revolution in Egypt and the Afghan war.

    Thanks a lot!

  • @noxure Americans hate middle easterns, thats why they dont teach you about them, idoit.

  • @psptubeist It's not hate, it's just too recent. For the most part only what is considered history is taught in k-12 education since there is a de-emphasis on current/recent afairs. It's always being at the back of the book but teachers don't have enough time to teach everything so it's consistantly the first thing to get chopped out of the ciriculum. Americans are typically more apathetic than anything else towards foreign affairs in my exp.

  • @psptubeist Oh really, what about Chomsky?

  • @noxure that would be wondeful to see

  • @noxure Yes, more Middle East history please.

  • Guys, what device does Sal use to write? I already know he uses Camtasia (to record) and Smooth Draw, but it is obvious that he is not using a mouse to write. Please reply. (I'm thinking of buying it, so please be specific if you can)

  • @Byron10301

    Wacom Intuos, I think...

  • @fortissimoX Thank you so much.

  • @Byron10301

Wacom Bamboo Tablet - runs about $80. It's basically a pad with a stylus that you use to write on a computer screen with.

  • 6:02 LOL...

  • just in time for ap world history

  • what's up with AT&T and Allende?

  • @Manodragon ITT, not AT&T

  • Yay, Latin America. This is great stuff. I expect there to be a history of everything on your site & on here within a few years, Khan!!!

You have my undying appreciation for bringing all of this knowledge to the masses.

  • can you do a video on Guatemala?

  • i only subscribed yesterday (because of your hem vids) and i already respect you as an individual, you for free, spend your time trying to help others learn while at the same time trying to be impartial and even telling people to on some level and check information independently

  • Just shows how US is all about it's own interest and profit. Pinochet was the Stalin of South America, but he loved those US dollars...ugh, disgusting.

  • @TheDepreso Every country is all about it's own profit.

The US has a particular aggressive strategy, but that's because they can. They have economic and military presence everywhere, so no country can afford to condemn, let alone boycott them. US citizens can't even be persecuted by the international court for human rights.

The loudest objections you'll ever here come from China and Russia when they say that "they're worried". The rest is not even saying that. The hypocrisy goes both ways.

  • @TheDepreso true, but what did you expect from america?

  • Or one on the Colombian FARC.

  • I really enjoy this kind of videos. history videos. it's just general knowledge that everybody should acquire and i'm very interested in this kind of things so a big thanks to you Sal. You're truly one of the best things there.

  • @khanacademy your history video rocks..... do u have any plan on making a video on the 1971 liberation war in Bangladesh?

  • good guys finish last..

  • Excellent. Could you do one on Iran and the CIA/MI6-backed overthrow of Mossaddegh, the reign of the Shah and how he was deposed by the Iranian revolution? I think it will help people understand the current situation down there better.

  • @BitterBurst not really much you can look into, whatever you read will have no proof weather it is for or against his existence, its all down to your personal beliefs :)

  • @ste3fc *whether

on what grounds do you say that there is no proof for or against? What if you just haven't found it?

  • @Xero well what kind evidence can be found exactly, and until it is found it is still only a belief.

  • Pakistan's history plz....

  • @Khanacademyr0cks hell yeah!

  • @RappaBitch Yeah Hell dear... i also prefer calling it hell... It was a heaven at the tym of quad-e-azam.. But now it is hell...!

  • @Khanacademyr0cks ruled by Zardari who killed his wife...

  • @RappaBitch Yeah... We people of pakistan are also sure abt that reality...!

  • This history stuff is awesome, I'm learning about things I didn't even know existed.

  • Sal stays pretty objective so far. Geography and history like this is pretty good. Just so people know the who, what and where. the who's who and the what's what.

would be good with poets and authors, too.

  • Yes, the economy did well during that time (as long as you weren't on 'the list') :) Good scaffold video.

  • @BitterBurst no proof he existed so ye

  • First person to science up on this vid.Woo!

  • Thanks, sal :D
