  • Well, according to the press, in 1992 Korea said she was 17, at the Olympics, so that would make her 12 here. lol, um yeah right.

  • I don't care how old she was - her routine here is better than anything I saw in Beijing.

  • I'm guessing she was . . . what- 18 here?

  • Oh my gosh..she's only 9 here? My 7 year old daughter is into gymnastics..so I get to see young girls her age do gymnastics. This is by far above her age group by years. Some gymnasts never develop this kind of skills regardless of their age. This is truly amazing....

  • wow she had to be at the very least 8 or 9 here because theres no way she could possibly be doing those skills if she was any younger. so im starting to think she was probably 13 or 14 in barcelona instead of 12. soooooo talented tho!

  • @LMA629 She was born in 78, so yes she was infact 9 here. Awesome 9 year old if you ask me

  • nadia, far from ready? i expect that explains the 3 gold medals and becoming the best gymnast in history. while many gymnasts arent ready, nadia's a bad example. she just did her her job and wasnt effected by how big the stage

  • cuantos años tiene en ese competencia esa gimnasta?

  • @dragu88 nadie sabe

  • Was she 5 years old? She was too "small"?

  • it IS incredible that someone of that age can perform like that. but i still find it disgusting that she was put in such a harsh competitive environment so early. way to rob a little girl of her childhood. she was probably training 15 hours a week from the time she was five.

  • This is what gymnastics is like in EVERY COUNTRY. 3.5 year old Dominique Moceanu could not have possibly decided "oh yes I want to dedicate my life to this sport." By the time these girls are old enough to have memories, gymnastics is just what they have always done.

Basically all world-class gymnasts are under insane pressure and have insane parents, but what can you do.

  • 15 hours a week is only about 2 hours per day..... it's better than a 5 year old sitting on ass for 2 hours a day watching tv.

  • I think maybe this person (antibaka6502) either made a typo or doesn't understand how much elite gymnasts train. 15 hours a week isn't really anything. If they want to complain about her "childhood being taken away" they'd need to imagine her training at least 40 hours a week.

  • @AmelieYvette elite gymnasts train way more than 15 hours a week its more like 30-40 but other than that i agree with what you said

  • she looks 8, so she was most probably 13 at the olympics. she had teeth missing in 1992, which can happen until you're just about that age, not any later.

  • @lepetitpoulet By age 13 I had not yet changed all my teeth. In fact, I had quite a few of my baby teeth pulled out by a dentist at that age to speed things up. I was also a gymnast. Wonder if that tooth changing delay could be related to training, just like the delay in puberty (which I didn't hit until 17).

  • Thank you for posting this amazing archive footage of the great Kim Gwan Suk. She's such a baby here-and clearly incredibly talented. She's known for her innovative bars releases but she was quite excellent on beam.

  • apperently she was even younger than 13,around 11 but..i just dont understand why she got disqualified. She was good enough to be there so who cares if she wasnt 15..:(

do you know why she didnt go to the 1996 olympics?

  • That's the exact reason for the age limit. pre-pubescent girls are more supple and can complete more difficult skills if they can learn them. If allowed to compete, they are pushed by their coaches (and country) into competitive levels not designed for such young competitors. Nadia, Kim Gwang Zuk, Dominique Moceanu. While limitless physical training prepared their bodies for the events, emotionally, they're far from ready.

She didn't compete in 1996 because the FIG couldn't ascertain her age.

  • How can you say that Nadia, Kim, and Dominique were not ready? What did they say, that they wished they were four years older until they had their first Olympics? I think it varies from child to child and it's up to the coach and the National Federation to determine whether a child is psychologically ready or not - age is just a number and means nothing in a general sense of maturity.

  • She was amazing for her age! Is was just IMPOSSIBLE girl with her size with 15 years old... gymnasts can be smal...but...so much???

  • They put her up as 15 for three years in a row and they didn't notice?! Outrageous!

  • Unbelievably stupid, more like!

  • They tried to claim that she was 16 when she won gold on bars at the '91 Worlds but she was born in '78 which made her only 13. North Korea's lies banned them from the '93 Worlds.

  • She's amazing. Such flexibility and strength at her age. What a great natural arch, I wish I had her feet. Too bad that she's pretty much vanished from the scene.

  • She was 8 in this competition which is incredible. Such an amazing talent.

  • Wow, what a beautiful beamer. She just owns that thing.

  • I think with the age-fixing, she was probably about 8 in this video.

A lot of poise for an 8 year old.

  • she's so cute!!! is she like 9 or something?

  • this kid is incredible! starting out with the press handstand. swoon...

  • wow shes amazing. and so young!

too bad shes from the north korea.

  • She treats that beam like it's a mile wide floor!! Shame she's from such a despotic country!!!!

  • some people just have it so naturally...

  • didnt they find out she was only 10 or something in the 1992 olympics?

  • She was not 10 in 92 but maybe 13/14 ! she was born in 78 ! anyway she was not elligible for the Olympics !

  • More like 13 I think, she certainly couldn't have done this at 5 because she wouldnt have developed enough strength and coordiantion.

  • Agreed. Dominique Moceanu looked very very tiny at 13-so did Shannon Miller, and Kim Zmeskal.
