I was born 2 years after Lucys death but she was an AMAZING comedian. Some of the things she did are to this day the GREATEST things you could EVER find in the history of television.
It's not blackface. It's "hobo" pitchblack. Soot. Chimney-sweep style. In my generation, the 50s, every kid in America took coals from the fire and rubbed hobo soot on his face. It was meant to represent an unwashed lifestyle -- on Halloween when he or she went out wearing Dad's old coat to dress as a "hobo."
Two greats who gave their all for the people and did it because they loved it and loved the applause more than anything aside from their families.Truly what this country needs again.
@cherf45616-I agree! Lucy was a fantastic entertainer. Have u ever seen her in serious acting roles? I have and I own two great drama movies that she did in the past. One was very famous for TV called "Stone Pillow" and I own this too on DVD. Lucy and Red Skelton must be entertaining people the same way now in Heaven with Jesus and God!
We miss both of them, they both were great. Red was a fantastic clown and so was L. But i also agree with the previous poster, she was also great in more serious roles.
Those were the good old days. I do my best to keep his memory alive by performing 4 nights a week 9pm at the Royal Resort Hotel 99 Convention Center Drive in Las Vegas.
I would like to invite everyone to check out the ONLY show in Las Vegas with a Red Skelton impersonator.
"Poor Everybody Else" was written especially for this episode by Arthur Hamilton, who provided occasional musical numbers for the hour-long epsiodes...
where is the episode where they go to nevada and the mertzes and the ricardos fight over uranium? I almost died in my bed one night laughing at that episode.
@jettkrash You are correct. They were a part of a decent era when entertainment was clean and entertaining before the talentless degenerate filth that we have had for the past 30 years or so took over.
They are probably entertaining the Angels in Heaven right now. At least, I hope so!
Not blackface. It was a common "hobo" costume -it's supposed to be a 5:00 shadow. Freddy the Freeloader was Red Skelton's hobo character. What's stupid is Lucy wearing it.
@ABCjen868, I've seen this episode several times, and own it as part of the "I Love Lucy: Complete Series" set, and I can say for sure that they were not in "blackface". Lucy and Red Skelton would never have done such an act. Both legends went out of their way to be sure that their comedy was not offensive.

It's a shame that television programming has lost its quality. Today's so-called reality shows are so inferior to this.

Are they in blackface? It looks like it. His makeup is darker than hers and there's the whiet around the mouth and it's not makeup it's skin.

Not blackface. It was a common "hobo" costume -it's supposed to be a 5:00 shadow. Freddy the Freeloader was Red Skelton's hobo character. What's stupid is Lucy wearing it.
