I totally forgot about this song! I used to LOVE hearing it come on the radio. It always reminded me of the earlier hit by Chad and Jeremy "The Summer Song" . (when the rain beats aginst my window pane, I'll think of summer days again and dream of you) Same wistful melancholy feeling
This was one of the BEST songs of the 1970's and the BEST version of this song, though Lobo had a close second with his version. I was 18 when this came out and still remember that summer well today. I had just graduated from high school and did not know what direction I was going in in life. Sweet mellow songs like this on the radio helped give me joy during that most difficult time. Thanks, Cymarron, for the inspiration and this very memorable song!
Chatauqua Lake New York summer of 1971. Best song and one of the best summer's of my life. 14 years old, Good freinds, boating, water skiing, GIRLS! and just bombing around having fun.
What an incredible song. Brings back memories of my first and best gf. The one who got away. So a little bittersweet listening to this....but music at its simpliest and finest. Here's to you babe, where ever you are!
This song was a constant on the radio in the summer of '71... on vacation in NH, driving from the lake to the beach picked up a couple hitchikers. Went with them to an island off the Mass/NH coastline. Hung out with them at their cottage and the neigbor girl came by and I was so smitten by her, it was unbelievable. Her last name was Ring. The two are forever linked in a very happy memory.
This definitely brings back the memories of the early '70s. I was just entering high school in San Antonio in '71. Heard this yesterday on kfxm.com, a great oldies station that plays a lot of stuff that nobody else does. I was so happy to hear this again--probably the first time in 20 years or more. Ah, when life seemed simpler and so full of possibilities. More stations should pick up this song and so many others that never seem to get played anymore. Glad I grew up with this kind of music!
@wanative57 71 was my 1st yr. of H.school too.Went to work at my uncle's horse ranch that yr.taking tourist on horseback tours of Chickamauga National Military Park (Civil War).Probably my best summer EVER(yet?).
Good to see some of us old folks still "truckin" HaH!
Think real hard all you 50 somethings, doesn't this song take you back to the late Summer of 1971? As obscure as this song may be, it zones me into that exact time of my life, barely 3 months out of high school!
Doesn't ANYONE out there think that Cymarron sounds a little like Kenny Rogers and the First Edition? Thought it was them when I first heard this in the summer of '71. Finally downloaded it. Great pop song with a slight country feel. Refer back to riccardo8943 posted in 2009.
I can,t believe, i fianaly found this dam song--i kept remembering the -let the telephone ring-i searched everything i knew for years--this is WOrth the searching--Thanks Cymarron---
@justmusicandme Thanks for sharing this, Loretta. Added it to 1971 in my 111 playlists for every year since 1900. Reminds me of Partridge Family style arrangements, cute bubblegummy sound! chuck
I totally agree with one of the posters comments that the early 1970s is the stronger half of the decade than the late 1970s when it comes to music but both eras of the 1970s are great
Rings bings back so many wonderful memories for me, I was listening to it in Tennessee on Aug 1, 1971 and ran into a car from Illinois. Met the family in it, and their 17 year old daughter, Debbie. It was love at first sight for both of us. We talked on the phone everyday for 2 weeks . I met them in Orlando, Fla. after that. We dated a couple of times and got married on Aug. 30, 1971. We went to Jettys Park every time we could. We loved the beach. Still together. I love you Deb, Steve.
@StevenG1953 That really is sweet . You really ran into each other ,, HA . I loved your love story . Really happy you're still together. I heard this song on Sirius Radio today & had to lookk it up . My husband & I had a short 'courtship' too . 2wks. ,been together 20yrs. 8mon. Who says whril winds don't last .{?} Just had to reply to you .
@connie390 Wow Thanks for your comment. Congrats on your 20 yrs. It is so strange, An hour ago We were talking over breakfast about going back to Florida for our 40 th in Aug. Well good luck and enjoy being with eachother. StevenG1953
@StevenG1953...goose pimples. What a story in itself, but I recall this song from my time as big dog" fixin to enter the sixth grade in the Fall of 71'. One year later, Summer 72', this Chicago native, moved with my family to Cocoa Beach, Florida. I walked the few blocks from homw to the beach every day that summer. I have made Tennesse the most visited state since then, visiting an older brother in Chattanooga. Small world!
Very hard to find oldie. This song is so forgotten that it's not available on ITunes or any other music service.was 11 years old when this song was popular. Forgotten oldie but I always liked it.
been wondering and searching for this from time to time for almost 35 years... i was 11 when i heard it on my first radio, but never caught thier name ...thanks now im satisfied after all these years... love it and sharing it to my facebook
@christinedhamilton. I read Eddie Reeves story about the song, how all the contents in the song meant something to you two. The sun comes up across the city...how you two were married at the beach house at 6am...Great story, and I always loved this song. Guess ol' Mac Davis missed out.
BUMP (1 year ago -- by christine d hamilton) This is terrific. The song was written for me and my, then, husband as a wedding gift by Alex Harvey & Eddie Reeves. Our day was very special. Although we are no longer married, we are still friends. Still love the lyrics and everyhing about this song. P.S. We were in the radio/record business. So cool.
@Gravida12 , this is total lies and deceit. I guess you get off making fools of the unsuspecting public. Anyone who was truthful would include their real names. "PS: we were in the radio/record business." For kicks, exactly which was it? I've done enough research to know that Harvey and Reeves have no idea what you are talking about. Bullshitters. The truth is you have no self esteem and hope to get some by fakery. Maybe you should be in politics.
Hmm...chuy35, the main thing that stands out in your post is the anger. That's not very convincing. One never knows about authenticity on the web, but I thought these posts sounded credible--not a bragging tone, lots of background information. If you have "done research" that shows these are fake, I'd be very interested in your evidence. If you can make a credible case, I'd be glad to cancel these two "bump" posts. Otherwise, I'll leave them up for others to consider, evaluate, and enjoy.
Gravida, Frustrated, is what it is. The woman may be "the" Chris. But she never mentioned her husband by name, Bob, or the restaurant by name, a famous Italian restaurant, Martoni's. Curious. Reeves, or someone, posed the facts on the web at about the time she did, also curious, but possible. It is a good story. Maybe you should contact the person before re-posting. Just a thought. In the long run, it doesn't matter. It's still a wonderful song. Chinita
@monkeyblaze I like this version a lot, but Tompall and the Glaser Brothers's version is my fave. Was #7 on the country charts the same year as this one. Check it out for a different take.
dennis, I checked it out, at least, the first few lines. Sounds as if he is singing from cue cards. I predict it will never be a top 25, in this country. Cymarron is the genuine article. Thanks to radiovixen and deafsubtitles for posting it. saludos, joe
LOL! I hear ya, two different moods for sure. I was born in the '65 so I was but 9 or so when the Lobo version was on the radio. I didn't know that it was released earlier by someone else (Cymarron) until a couple of years ago when I to XM radio and they were playing on the 70s channel. I have spent a lot of time putting an oldies collection together and when I play it at parties they are always a hit. Take care.
Yep that's it I just checked it out. "come on in, I got the Allman Brothers on the stereo". I like your pun...doesn't ring a bell I do like the Lobo version better but they are both good.
Tuneeeeeeee Vixen! wtg. My computer wakes me up everday. At 7:30am my Realplayer launches and this very tune wakes me up leaving me in a great mood for the rest of the day.
I'd like to retract the comment below, after listening to this version a few more times it's definitely much better than I thought at first, in fact it's really good.
far out man, I really dig this man, I mean like this is totally groovy man, outasite baby, its my bag dude, I can really get it on in this scene. These cats are just too way out man
I was driving cross country from LA to Boston when this song came on the radio. I was singing along so happily that I lost control of the car and ran over 2 hippie hitchhikers. I've often wondered if their families missed them. Come to think of it, I remember singing along to the rest of the song!! What the hell. Why not?
I was one month away from finishing my 4-year hitch in the US Navy, stationed in Key West, Florida, when this song was on the charts. I think it was on the juke box in every barl on Duval Street. To me, it was a good easy listening song.
Simple.., elouquent song, about an ordinary relationship, an ordinary courtship, and an ordinary marriage, like most of us all will eventually have... Absolutely beautiful.
I'll be 57 in exactly one month. This is one of my favorite early 1970s song. But please pull James Taylor off the stereo and put on Neil Diamond instead! Maybe his song "Glory Road", which was recorded by group member Richard Mainegra as a solo artist. But not Neil's rendition of "Up on the Roof"! I'll take James Taylor's over his, and the Drifters' over either of them!
The 2 Richards in this group later joined up with Jimmy Griffin of Bread fame, and formed the country group The Remingtons. I saw them at Taste of Cincinnati & again on The General Jackson showboat down in Nashville. Miss them, but wish them all well. Thx for posting!
Heard this song on an oldies station and realized I have not heard this song in FOREVER!! It's just one of those "one hit wonders" that doesn't get played enough. Love it!!!!
This is not the version I recall on the radio in 1971, this version sucks, was this a country version and somebody else had a different one on the rock stations?
Hey Uncle Ricky, Still one of my favorites hearing you, Sherril & Richard again takes me back to Anaheim & Memphis. You guys were great together, but you are a star all alone in my sky. Mama was so happy everytime she hear you singing this song.... Love you, R
im 59, a long distance truck driver, I havent heard this song since 1973, an when i heard this song again, the other day, I had to pull over,I cried my eyes out, called my wife "Amber" , it was our song that put us together, god....I love my wife "Amber", thanks CYMARRON !!!!!
i really love this one hit wonder if any of u all listend to 107.9 it moved to b104.3 it comes in through ridgewood so any of u ridgewood peeps are alsome
Do you have the song "Like Children"? It was the flip side of the single Rings, or at least of one release. I've never heard it again since I lost the 45 decades ago (I can still play most of the guitar chords, though...)
BTW this is a mindblowing song to play a cover of, if you're a hitchhiking hippie... it's just NOT what people expect to hear. Good for getting people to give money who ordinarily wouldn't give money to hippie street musicians ~~ \ 8>)
Thank you so much for this song, I couldn't remember who sang this version, it took along time trying to find it. This is the best, I love the haromies at the end!!! You're the best.
Where has the Music gone? My God how fortunate many of us were to come up through the 70'S. A decade of talent in both quality and quantity that sadly will probably never be repeated. I know you shouldn't live your life looking back, but I can't help it. I'd go back in a nano second. Wonderful, Wonderful years. I am so Blessed and Thankful!
Thanks! I have been looking for this song forever, but I was always spelling Cimarron the correct way. I was 15 that year and I had high hopes that someone would ever love me that much.
Gosh, what a great feel good song! Reminds me of growing up in the 70's wondering what it would be like to have MY first girlfriend...also like the James Taylor reference since I grew up in NC.
met two of these guys during my radioi days, when they teamed with a fellow from BREAD and had a minor hit on Country radio as the trio THE REMINGTONS.
I always thought that this song sounded like Kenny Rogers. Anyone else out there think so? One of those tunes you don't hear very often. Fun childhood memories!
This is terrific. The song was written for me and my, then, husband as a wedding gift by Alex Harvey & Eddie Reeves. Our day was very special. Although we are no longer married, we are still friends. Still love the lyrics and everyhing about this song. P.S. We were in the radio/record business. So cool.
You guys ever notice that most of the really great memory oldies (like this) are never heard on the oldies stations? Just the same tired old songs that we've all heard thousands of times. They just don't get it!
I had just finished the 6th grade when this song was a hit. I loved it so much that I bought the 45 with babysitting money. The lyrics and arrangement to this song are so beautiful. I had a best friend named Faith who loved the song, too. Sadly, we didn't know it would be her last June on earth. She was stricken with leukemia that month and died the next March 4th at 12. This song make me feel nostalgic for the good times we had.
I first heard this song when my dad obtained a pirated copy of it when we were East Germans. Then I ruined my dad's record by treating it like a frisbee. :P Now after all these years, I finally understand the English lyrics to this song. It's a nice tune.
---Great Song !!!! Kudo's for posting this 70's cool song

Reeves, or someone, posed the facts on the web at about the time she did, also curious, but possible. It is a good story. Maybe you should contact the person before re-posting. Just a thought. In the long run, it doesn't matter. It's still a wonderful song. Chinita

By far, I like Cymarron's version of this song the best. Lobo's version doesn't do it for me.
monkeyblaze 2 years ago
@monkeyblaze I like this version a lot, but Tompall and the Glaser Brothers's version is my fave. Was #7 on the country charts the same year as this one. Check it out for a different take.
Thanks for posting by the way. Love this tune.

@monkeyblaze .Ditto! The Cymarron version before even this one was even cool with less instrumentation...

Tompall and the Glaser Bros sings this song very well. You should check it out!!

dennis, I checked it out, at least, the first few lines.

I'd like to retract the comment below, after listening to this version a few more times it's definitely much better than I thought at first, in fact it's really good.

I was driving cross country from LA to Boston when this song came on the radio. I was singing along so happily that I lost control of the car and ran over 2 hippie hitchhikers. I've often wondered if their families missed them. Come to think of it, I remember singing along to the rest of the song!! What the hell. Why not?
smokiebird06 2 years ago
I was one month away from finishing my 4-year hitch in the US Navy, stationed in Key West, Florida, when this song was on the charts. I think it was on the juke box in every barl on Duval Street. To me, it was a good easy listening song.

This is terrific. The song was written for me and my, then, husband as a wedding gift by Alex Harvey & Eddie Reeves. Our day was very special. Although we are no longer married, we are still friends. Still love the lyrics and everyhing about this song. P.S. We were in the radio/record business. So cool.
