Swerving one way, then the other, to miss an obstacle is worthwhile in any environment. Sure, we don't have elks in Britain but we do have children and dogs and debris in the outside lane of the motorway. And Mercedes agreed because first they said they'd change the tyres, then they said stability control would be fitted as standard, then they stopped the production lines. The fact is, Mercedes screwed up - Jeremy Clarkson (motoring journalist)
I had a head accident with my grandpa 2 years ago while sitting on the nearside / passenger side. Our speed was about 70km/h-80km/h (45mph) cause I remember my grandpa was able to use the break at least a bit. The front was completely destroyed, but the room where your feet are was totally fine, the accident power was transmitted from the front to the BACK, the rear lights were destroyed as well as parts of the tailgate, the side of the doors was fine, too. A VERY SAFE VEHICLE when in accident!
Hmm This isn't particularly what the car is designed to do is it? do you do slaloms on dual carriageways? If you manage to get it to roll I think you are driving wrong :) The ESP helps though!
@vanepico Yep... it's all totally safe, too! The cops are even advocating it as an effective way to maneuver through traffic. Nothing like some good 'ol "alternative driving techniques" to chop some minutes off your daily commute. :-)
@gazzxr Well I like the car,not a big fan of a mini but this one is different. It has a lot of space campared to others and a SH one is not that expensive.
if the car fails this test , is it still going to come in the market or they will do something to make it better so it dosn,t roll over , what do they have to do in order to make it not roll on this kind of turn?
@caonoak: When Mercedes found out about this problem, they recalled all the cars sold at the time (1997), and they solved the problem by modifying the suspension and adding electronic stability control. I believe the problem was down to the tall dimensions of the car, and the pivoting motion that the unusually strong floor pan allowed for. All examples are perfectly safe now (although any pre-98 should be checked for this recall before you buy).
that's the non-esp model, the one that failed that particular test, the one that drove mercedes into stopping production and putting advanced suspension system and ESP. :)
@FretFreak02 Yes. However I've learned to not use it online, it's hard to miss. I don't think you do though if you're saying your comment was sarcastic.
@FretFreak02 The reason it's called "the moose test" is because when you are driving on the highway and suddenly the moose comes out of the forest, you have to either turn like this - or drive into the moose.

@FretFreak02 it's not an everyday test, you cretin. It's to find out what happens in extreme circumstances like having to swerve suddenly to avoid hitting something.

And if you want to talk to ''thoughtful'' people why don't you go to a bunch of tree hugging hippies and complain about what happend to the world. Knock yourself out.
@FretFreak02 No. You've got it all wrong. Handling isn't about driving like a teenager.... Good handling response = Good SAFETY! Even your grandmother can be presented with on the road surprises that she'll need to maneuver around. When those situations occur, you want a car that is solid, predictable, secure, stable, with GOOD if not STELLAR handling dynamics. As you can see, the A-class would be quite a handful for grandmother to handle during an accident avoidance maneuver.
Yeah, and if you want a good laugh price a tune up on a VR6 Jetta, Cool cars, but I just hate the way they're engineered, the oil plug on a 2003 Mercedes 320 suv directly faces the front suspension and fans out everywhere no matter what and why is there a wiring harness in newer bmw wheel hubs? if it makes noise have it fixed, if you're too stupid to know when your brakes are going out, you shouldn't be driving.

no..ESP does that for you and i remember back then mercedes called off every single A class worldwide to put ESP and now it's impossible to do such thing
nikose34 3 years ago 2
i've never heard of ESP. did Mercedes sell the A class in the United States?
spitfire2002 3 years ago 2
they never sold the a class in the us, and esp is mercedes's acronym for stability control

ESP is made so as not to lose control of the vehicle (understeer/oversteer) ARP is the one that prevents rollover
