  • Worked just great! Thank you for sharing.

  • THANK YOU! :) My AO Smith was doing exactly what you describe so I followed your instructions and now I have heat and hot water again. Now I feel like I can fix anything LOL Thank you I would have never got this job done without your step by step vid.

  • Great advice, Thanks for this video.

  • Thanks dude you were spot on!!

  • do i need to drain the tank?

  • I just had a customer that has a A O Smith GPS-75 Promax Power vent. The blower was bad and I replaced it. Now the flame is getting to much air from the cover plate area and the flame is being blown out and away from the flame sensor. When the unit does light; flame is weak. I tried to vaccum the inside of the burner area and the outside under the water heater. I can't find instructions from A O Smith on proper way to clean air intake. Any ideas?

  • @geo

Went through the process and cleaned the Flame sensor. Put everything back together and the WH still cycles 3 times and shuts off with the 3 lights signifying system lock out. Have you heard this and what steps people have taken at this point? Any help is appreciated.

    Rob

  • Going to try this tomorrow night. My AO cycles just as you said and then show me the lock out code. After its clean and reinstalled, do I need to follow the reset instructions or should it boot right up as normal once I turn the blower back on?

    Thanks

  • This Video is Extremely good. I have AO Smith Water Heater. I had igniter problem. I could able to fix it.

  • Thank you so much for the video!!! Our home has this in our laundry room, and despite attempts at keeping it clean and dust free, this problem has occurred like clockwork every 8 months since building in 2008. Each time it has cost us 90$ for the service man to come and use a tiny bit of steel wool, for under ten minutes, and back it works again for another 8 months. Supposed to be an awesome water heater, and you just made it such. I can also hopefully extend the life of it! Bless you!

  • I changed the link to public because it would not post with it and I then made a video response.

  • Great Video. Very thorough I'm a service & repair plumber with 25+ yrs.

A co-worker installed an AO Smith - BTN 100 110 today and had a problem.

This unit has 2 burners and the one with the flame sensor was loose and wasn't getting good flame rectification.

Fixed that but have another problem.

I just uploaded a video with a burner problem

I've never seen this problem before and thought maybe you might have an opiion

Video is unlisted & only 30 sec

  • @krazedav

    Interesting....

    Try the following:

Insufficient secondary air.....Provide ventilation to heater.

Orifice too large.....Replace with correct orifice.

    Defective thermostat.....Replace with new thermostat.

Let me know how it works out!

    Geo.

  • THANK YOU!!! First hot shower in weeks! I was apprehensive to do this with the gas explosion/electrocution risk (if anyone were going to mess this up, it would be me), but this was super easy! I used a dollar bill, since I didn't have sandpaper on hand, and it worked!

Also, if all the intellivent lights are off, does that mean it's working fine?

  • @coquigretch

    Dollar Bill?

Something I probably would not have thought of......

And the student becomes the teacher!

    Nice...

    Thanks,

    Geo.

  • So I am having this same problem right down to the T. I have had local gas company techs out twice now to "clean" the unit. They have never done this step nor have they fixed it. They said that we have to replace the Control valve and that would be around $1,119.00. I am going home to try this and see if it does the trick . if it does I Love you!!!!!! I think they may want help paying for their new home office LOL

  • @hollyscoter

So, what's the verdict? Did it work?

    G.

  • @geofatboy

So far so good!!!! When they serviced it previously it would work for a little while too. So if this fix works longer than 2 months I would say it is fixed fixed yes!!!!

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!

  • @hollyscoter

    Excellent!

    Geo.

  • @theantiquegarage

    Excellent!

I'm glad you were able to get the unit working in short order!

Enjoy your next shower, compliments of Geofatboy!!!!

  • well done ,good video

  • @triedcobra

    Thanks much!

    G.

  • Video was very informative I had the same problem. The cause of my problem was flooding. If I use your remedy is there any other precautions i need to take or concerns I should have? Thanks

  • @okbone111

Make sure your unit is thoroughly dried out and no water is contacting any of the electrical devices both inside and out!

Look into a flood control system to avoid future mishaps.

I'll give you the address to send a check for the service call.... :)

    Just kidding!

Your next hot shower is on me!

    Geo.

  • Love the video...hope it works, however the trouble code indicates intake or exhaust obstructed. What do you think?

  • @czatell1

    Thanks,

Check the exhaust and verify that it is clear all the way through...

Ensure that the exterior vent is not clogged.

You should hear and feel the exhaust when the unit is running.

Hope you get it sorted out!

    Geo.

  • I've been called worse Bro! :)

I leave the hose attached and drain it periodically as it helps reduce the scale and sediment build up....

Hope all is well in the UK!

Sorry about Ms Winehouse BTW.... too much talent to be obliterated by drugs.

    Shame...

    Geo.

  • @geo. The jack of all trades. Big difference between U.S. And U.K. Water heaters, ours is heated with an immersion element which is inserted into the tank. The problem with that is over time limescale will cling onto it and reduce the heat output thus rendering it and London is notorious for hard water. Which means replacing the elements and getting expensive call out from heating engineers. Be well mate. Your bro G from across the pond.

  • I had done the steps as mentioned but i don't see any lights coming up which used to come before and don't hear any noise that the water heater is really running....Is there any thing I need to do ? Please reply :(

  • @chigurupatis

Ensure that your power to the unit is on...

If you're not getting any lights at all, something's up....

    G.

  • God Damn! I don't know a hammer from a screw driver, but I followed your instructions and WALLA! I can take a nice warm shower tonight. Excellent video. If I can do this, anybody can.

  • @lordgoth77

Tell me how you really feel!!!

Thanks for your comment, which put a huge smile on my face....

    Have a great day.

  • @geofatboy Well it felt great to get the heater going without

calling the local schlep to come out and fix it. However my wife took the dog and went down the block to

her friends house, when I shut off the gas and disconnected the gas line... She and the dog came back about 30 minutes later, seeing that there was no loud BOOM in the area. I will definitely checkout shave

    Nation.com. Thanx again man.

  • @lordgoth77

    LOL!

    Your wife is no dummy!

Take the dog and vacate the premises.

I'm glad you got it sorted out and the house is still standing!

    Good work.

    G.

  • It worked out for me - thanks a lot for the detailed instructions!

  • @toolmanbmw

    Awesome Brother!

More money to spend on shaving equipment! :) :)

    Check out ShaveNation.co m

  • This video is excellent! It reinforces and expands on what I learned the hard way. My A.O. Smith LED status presented with the problem was left-most and "A" and "B." The owner's manual (7/03, 50 gal) says the problem is "system in lockout." None of the "solution"s mentioned anything about cleaning the flame sensor. Thanks a lot A.O. Smith!

  • @cyberfred1

    Hah!!!

I'm almost positive that I read the same manual......

Didn't see hide nor hare of it mentioned on those pages...

Which is why I made the video.

    Enjoy!

    Geo.

  • Thanks! Because of your crystal clear step-by-step instructions, our hot water is restored and I'm a hero ... at for at least the next 5 minutes :)

Definitely saved me a service call!

  • @dwharvey65

    LOL!

    YOU'RE THE MAN!!!!!

Enjoy your hot shower and, I'm glad I could help!

  • @1Corinthians10v23

    Hubby saves the day!

Reward him with some nice shaving equipment from ShaveNation.c o m.!

Family of seven? Sounds like you might need two water heaters! LOL!

    Glad to help out...

    Best,

  • Lol well Mr geo I'm a Hyundai tech aka mechanic Haha it pays the bills for the most part. I like the bathroom in your house its just like mine all tile my house is all Greek with the rod iron in the front and colums. What can I say proud of my culture

  • @MrBawston

    Yiasou!

Reminds me of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" LOL!

    Take Care,

    Geo.

  • Geo your a plumber ?

  • @MrBawston

Actually what you'd call a "Spahky" over on the east coast!

But pretty well versed in all the trades as a result of over 30 years of "wrenching" on Homes, Apts, Restaurants, Stores, 50 Story Buildings, Cars, Motorcycles, yada yada!!!!

    How 'bout you Mr B?

    G.

  • Thanks for the video; unfortunately, I'm the 1 out of 10 that seems to be a different cause.

The problem seems to be like you described. The flame lights it burns for a minute or two and then it seems like someone is trying to blow it out and it clicks and re-lights a few times before shutting down and trying again, and eventually locking out. I've checked air flow in and out and they both seem good, although I do have a shed that's near (2 ft.) the exhaust vent.

  • @sretawk

If the shed is blocking the intake and/or exhaust to your water heater, this can definitely affect its performance.

Don't know if you could move the shed and see if the heater works properly, but it may be the first step to take in your trial and error process of attempting to find a solution.

    hope this helps!

    Geo.

  • Thanks for the video, you taught me how to shut off the gas. (mouse trap in corner, lol.

  • @ss4gokuss4vegeta

    Hah!!!

You have a keen eye my friend!

You are the first person to notice and mention that!

    Very Nice!

    Glad I could help.

    Geo.

  • Have an American Water heater PVG6250T60NV FVIR unit. It is about 3 years old and has started to do this exact thing. Flame starts then goes out. I am able to get it going by pulling the power and resetting but need to take the burner out and clean. Before I do I am concerned about damaging the glow bar and I wonder if this part would be available locally or only directly from AWH in TN. Do you know what the cost would be for this part? Good to have around I suspect!

  • @dsc3507

Take the model number, and serial number of your American water heater and call your local supplier.

They should have one in stock and I'm guessing the price should be between $100 and 150 for the whole igniter/glow bar assembly.

If you are very careful removing and reinstalling it, you should be OK.

It may break if bumped, don't touch it with your fingers, the oil will definitely shorten its life.

But, you're right, it's a good idea to have the spare, just in case.

    Good luck,

    Geo.

  • thank you , it help me fixing my problem .

  • @rampage342

    Glad I could help...

    Enjoy your next hot shower!

    Geo.

  • One important note: The flame sensor is to blame only if you GET A FLAME and it goes out.

I had this same intermittent problem but I never got a flame at all during the retries before lockout. A.O. Smith help desk made the problem worse by claiming that a faulty electronics/gas valve board will not cause an intermittent problem. I eventually proved them wrong: If I tap the housing with a wrench, it starts every time. The valve is flakey - something AO Smith support says is impossible...

  • @pnnielsen

Hah! We all know that nothing is impossible!!

Unfortunately, out of the millions of water heaters they sell you wound up with the one with a Gremlin living inside the valve...... Sorry!

I'm sure it's beyond any warranty as well...

Thanks for the tip!, Greatly appreciated.

    Best,

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy Yes, unfortunately it's 5 months beyond the 6 year warranty. I did figure something was wrong last summer when I heard restarts but I didn't think of it much then and I thought the unit was out of warranty anyway (the builder did not leave the manual/docs). Also, I did not know that you're supposed to drain these units every 6 months or so to prolong the life. When removing the burner I noticed big chunks of rusted metal falling down, so I decided to order a new water heater...

  • @pnnielsen

That's sad that you only got 6 years out of it...

Be sure to drain the new one periodically so that no sediment builds up....

Hopefully it will last twice as long (or more) than the old one.

You might want to run a garden hose from the water heater drain to your floor drain, then just open it with a screw driver and let it run once in a while...

    Good luck,

    Geo.

  • Precisely what I need to know. I appreciate your help.

  • @jebidesse

    My Pleasure!

I hope it worked out for you.

    Geo.

  • Thanks you very much! In less than 10 minutes, I grabbed my tools from the garage and had it fixed! Wonderful video!

  • @schoenhj

    NICE!!!

I'm glad it worked out for you!

    Take Care,

    Geo.

  • could u make a video on fixing a A.O.Smith ProMax + plus?

theres no hot water, and i havent tooken a shower in 2 days

i dont know anything about water heaters, and i dont know if thats the name of the water heater, but can u help?

  • Very good !

  • @kinyip2008

    Thank You!!!

Here's to a nice HOT Shower!!!

    Take Care,

    Geo.

  • This is a GREAT video. Turns out, we did not have enough gas/pressure coming into the building. We had 2.5 inches of water collumn and the unit needs at least 5.0. So the gas company is coming out to check. Thanks again! Great job!

  • @pearlspine

    Excellent!

I'm glad you found your problem. Your next HOT SHOWER will be greatly appreciated!!!!

    Best Wishes,

    Geo.

  • I did the tutorial but no luck...the thing still just cycles several times before shutting off. I cleaned the sensor with 220 grit sand paper...but it looked very clean to begin with but the tray area was very dirty...should Iclean that as well or maybe I have to buy the whole new mechanism? What are my next steps? Thanks!

  • @pearlspine

Make sure your Glow Bar/Ignitor is turning orange, if not then you need to replace the asembly.

Sometimes, something as simple as a trash can in front of your exhaust is enough to cause short cycling. Make sure the exhaust is clear.

If it still doesn't work, check the sequence of lights on the temperature controller and refer to the owner's manual to see what those trouble codes mean.

Definitely clean the burner tray of any debris.

    Hope This Helps,

    Good Luck,

    Geo.

  • great video thanks a lot. it worked

  • @sgkrishnan99

Great, glad I could help you!

    Thanks!.

  • Thank you!!!!! I know absolutely nothing about water heaters (or anything mechanical for that matter), but followed your instructions and fixed my water heater in 10 minutes flat. Awesome video!

  • @gstivahtislowe Wow!!! That is great!!! Hopefully you're set for another 5 years...That's precisely the reason I video'd the procedure!!! Glad I could help. You made my day!!! The replacement assembly (ignitor and flame sensor) is over $100 not counting the service call...For anyone else reading, make sure to de-energize (remove power from the unit) and turn the gas off prior to starting. Best Wishes, Geo.
