Brings back some very painful memories this. Years later Goochie was on TMS and spoke about that delivery. He was a big practicer and said he was prepared that morning for every single possible delivery - except a slow full toss. For a player with such a fantastic record against the WI he had a pretty poor time v Australia (Alderman).
@lenogooch He played well against the Australians in 1990/1991 and 1993 (and the 1993 team must have been the strongest Australian side he ever faced, barring the 1975 team), but I remember him looking past it on the 1994/1995 tour. It was a sad way for his career to end, although I'll never entirely forgive him for dropping Gower...
@jstreete I reckon I played every ball he faced in that 1993 series. He played Warne espec well. Poor series in '81, '89 and 78/79 ultimately meant he finished with an average of 33 v Aussies. Terrific player tho - great appetitie for runs. Agree about the Gower stuff. Think he later regretted that decision ... but that Gower waft to fine leg just before lunch in that 90/91 Ashes series really was the final straw for poor old Goochie.
@lenogooch True, he was pretty miserable in 1989 - I think he even asked to be dropped. I reckon that must be the most depressing series in my memory, and there have been plenty of bad ones to compare it with. He was also poor in '81, as you say. I agree that he was an excellent player though, especially against pace.
@jstreete That is correct. He did indeed ask to be dropped. Looked as if that might be the end of him too - yet just 12 months later he began an incredible run of form that was to last over 3 years. Still can't quite understand how he could struggle so much against Alderman and yet do so well against similarish bowlers like say Kapil dev and Hadlee etc etc. He was the most unlikely Eng captain in d sense that he had resigned d essex captaincy a few yrs earlier as it was affecting his batting!!
Gooch is 41 years of age during this test match. He is one of the best batsmen in test match cricket even after 40.

Is Ritchie dyslexic? '"and Shane Warne who has 3 for 43" visibly it was 34/3 :)

Empty seats everywhere, you wouldn't get that in the Ashes now. Perhaps the Aussies just got bored with beating us.

I remember this, when it happened I was with the old man and one of his mates in the MCG Car Park looking for a spot to get into the ground.

Could use him at practice. My coach rarely returns catchable balls in fielding practice...

I remember Gooch getting out at The Oval in 1985 for 190-odd, driving a low full toss back to the bowler - could have been McDermott again.

@adp1070 Yes, but that was a very difficult catch & unlucky for Gooch. This was just silly batting: one series too many for Gooch and Gatting.

Wow, England played some shocking cricket during that series
