You know, seeing this video makes me tear up. It shows what Detroit once was. Look at how busy Downtown was! Look at all of the people, & cars, & buses! Look at all the businesses! Now, it's not busy at all, and there are way too many vacant shops. Terrible... Look at the houses?! Look at how beautiful they look. Look at the streets, the sidewalks. Everything was nice. If you were to go to those streets today, I guarantee you that you wouldn't see the same thing.

Detroit had a thriving middle class of blacks and whites both working in the auto industry. Then detroit was left to rot by corperations, retail stores, and whites who left the city due to race riots caused by police discrimination in the late 60s. I dont think either blacks or whites should be pointing fingers at each other, but we are! Its a shame In 2010 we still cant live together in the same communities.

Theory on better material vs cost to produce is similar to my friends. It's if large business pays less in taxes they'll pass the savings on to the consumer. I guess cause they are our friends. I differ and say they'll keep it all. Go ask the banks where the bailout money is. Business isn't in business to discount consumers. A few words about the decline of the Auto Industry. Yes the major reason for their decline was the UAW. UAW workers are so overpaid & their contracts so lavish that US auto makers cannot compete. There is a $2300 per car charge on US Autos just to pay for legacy costs of retired workers. It's impossible to make that up so Automakers had to cut costs everywhere else they could. That meant they had to used cheaper materials than they would have liked. The UAW also fought innovation tooth and nail.

I realize all these cost but they'd use cheap materials anyway. It's not like they'd ever say, WOW cost are down, lets use better materials.

There were tons of cars in the 70s that were total junk before all these cost. It's just the companies thinking you'll buy what they have to sell.

Japanese cars materials aren't as good as they were in the 80s. Cheap seats and interiors. Why? Don't have to be. Just have to be a little better than Americans. Easy task.

Conservative Ideology? Detroit hasn't had conservative governmental officials in at least 50 years. The city has been run by Democrats forever. It would have been impossible for all 3 auto companies to have been run by bad CEOs for such a long time. At least one of the companies would have found the right management. Racism- by whom? Coleman Young and his cohorts destroyed Detroit. It was a healthy city in 1945. When Demographics changed in 1960's it went to hell in a hand cart. Simple as that.
