This shows up so badly how absolutely pathetic britain has become at distance running now. It makes me inspired. sad and nostalgic all at once. Nobody takes up the sport these days, that is the trouble. It is a culture of pop idol and big brother, and fame for zero effort. No youth of today is going to pound the roads ot become a marathon runner Lazy cunts and vacuous nonentities
@jegspillerpiano What you're saying is partially true. However, another reason in my view is that road-running and marathon running is becoming a sort of fun / run for charity activity. There are a lot of road races being organised (in some cases by former athletes) for commercial purposes. Anybody can enter, anybody can run,. It does not matter about the qualty, it's about the quantity-how many will pay an inflated entrance fee. The London Marathon was the worst thing ever devised.
Absolutely unsurpassable. Jones achievements are unprecedented in UK athletics and a pure inspiration. Breathtaking speed, incredible form under an ocean of pressure and stomach-tearing speed. Having grown up in the running arena in South Wales when Jones was at his best was fairy tale inspiration. Its who wins, its how much you beat them by. Its complete rubbish he lacked finishing speed. Thank you so much for putting this video up.
@alwayswithchillis I must respectfully disagree. When track analysts say a person lacks finishing speed what they really mean is that they lack the ability to accelerate dramatically to cover the accelerations of other runners. If you watch those final moments of the race again you will see that Steve only accelerated hard once.My feeling is that he knew he would be caught eventually so he ran very fast but very evenly to wear out his competitors and left his one hard move for when it counted.
I still love this, in fact i love it more than i did a year ago! Wish i could see the whole race. Sends shivers down your spine, great athlete. An inspiration.
a front runner, who refused to give up, gosh i love it

One of my favourite runners. A front runner because he lacked finishing pace, but what a finish here. One of the best marathon runners in history.
