I also would like to offer my sincerest thanks and appreciation for reminding us all of the amazing gift that Theodore gave the world-forever cementing his name in history as the father of this truly awsome device. I know that the laser will continue to change our lives for the better for countless years to come. Very few men achieve the honor and immortality that Ted has.
The active element is chromium. The chromium is excited by the photons from the xenon lamp and when they fall back into their ground state they emit a photon of red light. Those photons of red light further excite the chromium atoms and more photons are emitted. Ones that are emitted parallel to the ruby rod bounce back and forth between the mirrored ends until enough photons build up and "break" through partially mirrored (emitting end). Hence, a coherent beam of single wavelength light.
Thank you Mrs. Maiman for providing this rare glimpse into history. It is an honor to have had this presented by you personally. Dr. Maiman's endurance, in the face of criticism and discouragement, is a testimony to all who would dare stray beyond the boundaries of conventional science. Like Albert Einstein, Dr. Maiman was willing to look past the limits imposed within the pages of a mere text book. He was able to transform theory into a reality that has changed the world in which we live.
Why would God do something "diffi cult" if it is possible to do it easy?
Waarom moeilijk doen als het makkelijk kan?
Why would we do diffcult if we can be toiless?
