its worth the money but I rather go for an epiphone sg and custom it. the gibson sg special to me isnt all that great and i hate that large ugly looking pickguard covering the wood

Ist nicht der Lack, ist das Holz! Gibson verwendet für die "günstigeren" Modelle kein hochwertiges Holz bzw. Holz, dass nicht so hochwertig und gleichmäßig strukturiert ist wie das für den Custom Shop bzw. die teureren Modelle.

dude i have a Jackson JS30DK and i dont have any problems with playing faster solos...and i think that SG worn cherry is waaay better than my Jackson(thats why im gonna get one soon ^^)so i think u should get a good distortion pedal...for more "metal"sound if u know what i mean..cuz i have a marshall MG30DFX amplifier and the distortion from my amp cannot match the distortion from my distortion pedal ^^:)
