The dog breeder that I got my dog from, who had been breeding dogs for years, didn't know as much about her animals as well as Petco employees seem to.
Petsmart, on the other hand, is not the best place to purchase an animal. Even Petsupermarket is better.
But getting animals from ANY pet store isn't the best decision, most are bred for money, and parents are kept in the finest condition.
And NEVER buy a dog from a pet store, no matter how clean it is!
Petco (well, at least the one near me) takes very good care of their animals. The cages are spotless, and the animals have a constant water supply and are given decent nutrition. My sister got a guinea pig from them; all the guinea pigs I examined had bright clear eyes, glossy coats, and very good dentition. The habitats are quite spacious. Petco employees are always at hand to care for and check on the animals and answer new pet owners' questions, and it's obvious they really like doing it.
First of all: You obviously are a cheap ass if you think petco overprices their animals. Its because they dont want cheapasses like YOU coming in and just expecting a "cheap" animal. they have them priced high for a reason so that a serious person coming in to find a family pet will actually buy them and not care about the price. So obviously if you came expecting a cheap pet, you have some problems!!! And blaming petco on the death of 3 of the reptiles you bought are your OWN problem! grow up

i got my okeete corn snake from petco. i listened to the care sheet they gave me because he was my first snake and aside from the stuff i learned from my girlfriend and her snake, monty, i didn't know much about the appropriate temperature, feeding, shedding, etc. he's a little over a year old now, he's about 23 inches long, he sheds great, he's a great eater, he's very healthy.
the only thing i have against petco is their small selection of snakes and tank sizes...and prices.

Ummm by te way snake breeders keep thier snakes in smaller cages than those because they use racks so you basically dont know anything about animals or reptiles beacause petco has all the information you need for their reptiles so its basically you fault that your pets die if you dont like petco why did you listen to them. That's bullshit. Every pet store I've been to uses reptile carpet. While they arn't the best conditions for the animals they are supposed to be temporary habitats. So if you want to help stop bitching and go provide a caring home for these animals. Also do your research before buying any animal. I read four books before getting my baby bearded dragon (from petSmart) and he has grown two inches in a month and is enjoying a safe habitat because I knew of impaction problems before I bought him.

I saw about five ball pythons in a 10 gallon at a petco and they looked pretty sick but other than that I never really saw any other flaws but this is just one petco I dont know how bad the others could have been

I personally have one by me that takes great care of their animals. I rescued a sick gecko at one point and they helped me nurse him back to health, free of charge. It's generally the chain pet stores that aren't as good to the animals.

I actually agree. The way Petco treats many of their animals are terrible. I work at PetSmart, and while I don't believe we take the absolute best care of them at PetSmart either, we do much better than Petco.
:( I've seen dead beardies there, on sand (still being young), tons of dead fish, extremely soiled water in bird cages, hamsters with wettail... and I have yet to see one where the employees seem nice/ knowledgeable.

As a Petco employee, i get very frustrated with this kind of scrutiny over pet stores. We try to provide the best for the animals that we carry on a minimal budget and do everything we can to find a good pet home for them as quickly as possible. The problem is with the people that assume a good FOREVER habitat for an animal is similar/exactly like the ones in the store. Those are only their temporary homes, its up to the knowledgeable consumer to provide the rest. Also, terrible song.

I work at a Petco and I totally understand where your coming from, BUT, we come in every day feed all the animals clean there cages and tanks, but you do have to understand that they do sell rather quick and most are baby;so there's really no need for bigger tanks, also these animals are shipped from other places so by the time they get to the store they are stressed, when people come in and tap on the glass or want to touch them also causes stress,

I have NEVER seen a store tell customers to come back to make a purchase. Most don't give a shit. And people bitch about the size of the reptile cages and whatnot, but damn, they are only in there maximum of a week or so before they are sold and it is NOT the petstores fault that people go in and buy animals without researching them. I researched Leopard geckos for 4 months before I bought one from a private breeder. Blame the dumb asses who can't use Google to look up their pets needs.
Our Petco is great. They are very caring about the pets they have there. Cages are clean and animals always have food and water which is more than I've seen at some mom and pop stores. They are very knowledgeable about their reptiles and just today I saw them turn down 3 different people who wanted to buy an aquarium and fish at the same time and they told them to go home and set up their tanks first and come back in a few days when the tank has had time to settle.
so once i went to petco and i saw all these rats in one little cage and i got so pissed so i went up to the manger and yelled at him that rats are exetremely intelligent, affectionate, and awesome and you keep them locked up in a little cage like this how dare you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly, I belive it is WHAT store youre buying your pets at. See, at my Petsmart, they take very good care of their animals. I go there very often and everytime they have clean bedding and food and water. They never put to many animals in 1 tank, at the most 4 in 1 tank. Once, there was a guinea pig there. I really wanted him but I couldnt have him. I knew that he would be gone the next time. He want. He was there a few times after then finally sold. They never hide anything in the back.

PetCo is horrible they closed the one down near me. As for petsmart, they aren't to much better they need to increase their cage sizes on their reptiles. But I do like how a lot of the employees there are pretty educated as well.
PetCo is awful. I went there and got a rat, was told a ten gallon tank was fine; I later found out each rat should have two feet of space. They have 15+ rats in a 20 gallon tank. Also, ALL the rodents they have the sell as live food for reptiles, even the more intelligent ones. The rats they sell there are as intelligent as dogs. They do tricks, can be litter box trained, respond to orders, are extremely affectionate, and they sell them as live bait. It's disgusting. Don't believe me, google it.

the petco in my city actually have clean tanks for all their animals. and the animals such as the birds and the turtles look fairly active so their current living conditions can't be that horrific.

my guinea pig is from Petco and our Petco is HUGE! Every animal has a giant cage and i havent seen 1 hurt/sick animal there. My friend works there and people always say

They have an onsite veterinarian to care for each animal.The vet comes in and treats the animals and humanely euthanizes any animal that cant be saved.
I dont know what Petco/smart your going to but ive seen some amazing places that CARE for their animals!

I've been to many different Petcos/Petsmarts in different cities and states. I've never seen a good one.
I've seen too many dead and dying fish. I've seen dead fish in an open container left in plain site to customers. Dead and dying rodents in crowded cages. Too many sick, dead and dying birds. I've seen unhealthy reptiles in unfit conditions. I've reported it to employees to do something. They never do anything.
@Novababy790 And no, they don't have an on site veterinarian. They have a vet that comes on certain days of the week to make sure the animals are still alive. They rarely really ever check them over unless they're about to die.

every petco is different, many have an on site vet, ours takes any sick animal to the local vet as soon as the sick pet is spotted. it just depends on the pet stores management as to what actually goes on.

If you know so little about an animal that you would take advice from a minimum wage employee in a large chain petstore, you probably shouldn't be buying the animal anyway.
Furthermore, anyone with half a grain of sense would buy their pets from small breeders that really know their animals. That way that you know exactly where your animal came from and don't get any horrific surprises.

They were crawling OUT SIDE OF ITS DEAD BODY... it was disgusting :0 my birds have died there.They ever told us that the birds couldnt drink the well water due to the Minerals and the possibility of the acidic.We found that out after going to Pet Nodds who told us.
ive gotten a lot of lizards and mice from my local petsmart/petco and they have been perfectly healthy and ive kept them all the way till i was no longer able to keep them or until they died of old age. if you bought an animal from petco/petsmart and they died later in your home then that is your problem because if you did enough research as you say you do then they would have gotten healthier if they were not already. another thing is good hygiene. your room is not.

Petco and Pestmart suck in my opinion because they give out the wrong information for most small animals, get their small animals from mills which support cruelty, and don't care about the animals' well being at all. All they want to do is make a quick buck. Sure, maybe you found an employee that loves their job and cares about the animals, but the big picture is that the company just wants to make money.
Maybe a couple of pet stores near you get their animals from local breeders, but they most likely are backyard breeders and inexperienced. Besides that, 99% of the small animals come from mills such as "Rainbow World Exotics". Look it up, it is a mass breeding mill. Try not looking at one specific pet store, but all of them combined together.

Consider a fish's lifespan when being transported and how easy it is to breed a majority of the fish that exist as staple breeds for a pet store.

So. All the animals at PETCO are very well housed. Leopard geckos should be on sand as it is what their (THIS IS THE CORRECT FORM OF THE WORD YOU ILLITERATE IDIOT) natural habitat has. Only the brand name Vita Sand is safe, however, the others will cause impaction. Do your research better. Also there are no 5 gal tanks at PETCO. They are 10 and 20 gal tanks for reptiles and 15 gal tanks for fish. All animals go through PETCO pretty fast, so the tanks don't need to be bigger. Also, learn English.

I have spent a lot of time in Petco, and they clean out every cage at least daily. "So far the only pets that were healthy was a boring garter snake and my leopard gecko." Boring? You seem to dislike your animal just because you don't find it entertaining. Have you considered that maybe the reason your pets don't live is because you don't take care of them properly? How DO you care for your animals? Also, you say Petco killed three of your reptiles. What reptiles and how did Petco kill them?
It sounds like you don't know very much about animals.... Yes there leopard geckos are on sand, and sand is a very popular choice for leos. It may cause some major problems, and may not be the best choice, but is that really reaon to hate them? Plus, outside of that, I have found most of their other habitats to be just fine. And yes, there is shit in the cages. Animals shit. Unless there is a person standing by, waiting for each and every animal to defecate so they can remove it, you'll see it.
Where I'm from Petsmart is WAAAAAAAY better than petco, every petco trank has a little dish in it full of salt that reads :"petco uses and suggests freshwater aquarium salt". What does this mean? THEY HAVE ICK! And they don't tell you! At least petsmart fish are disease free, although their holding conditions are still dreadfull... I wonder how many dead fish they throw away a week...

I hate to say it, but petsmart is not any better. My aunt bought me two birds from there, and we had to take them back because they were mean. She spent over 100 dollars from a private seller, just so I could have calm birds. I have never been to petco, but petsmart isn't any better. I did have a hamster from there, and it lives for 3 years, longer than a normal hamster life.

i go to petsmart and see the state of their aquatic turtle tank and get angry and i go to petco and see their turtles habitat and immediately get jealous. then have an hour long talk with someone who actually has a freaking clue. and the end result is that petco > petsmart

Of course, every store has employees who really don't care about their job (even when there are other lies at stake), but I know that I, for one, was a diligent employee. I cared about the animals, and most of my coworkers did as well. Someone already mentioned, the small-sounding tanks and cages are there because they're TEMPORARY. The idea is that someone will buy the animal and put it in a good size enclosure. Oy.

Petco is more expensive, but doesnt care about there animals at all... i know cuz i used to work there! they act like its a clothing store, and worry of the costumers and what they can sell. GO TO PETSMART or a shelter!
(1) All pet stores in chains are different. (2) The animals are only being housed there temporarily until purchased. (3) You still have to research needs for a specific type of animal and not rely on a regular person being paid minimum wage to give you truthful information. (4) You need to stop getting animals until you clean your disgusting house and put some socks on because your feet are nasty.
Alot of people say HORRAIBLE things about Petsmart and Petco, and even though I hated alot of Petsmarts for awhile, It all depends on the people working there and the condition of the animals there in at that store...Don't stereotype the whole company just because of the things you seen in one store. It's mostly the employees but make sure you do some research before you you buy an animal from any store.
i got a Russian tortoise for Christmas and hes healthy and petco is so awesome that they gave us a free water bowl and right now he is very healthy and dont leave your box on the floor

a lot of pet stores r like this but remember they r selling the pets to you not keeping them as pets but it is true they should be kept better. I just went to petsmart today and the fish were in the best of care, although over priced at petsmart they clean the tanks everyday and keep the tanks in certain condition depending the what the fish likes as in densely planted in some and some not, and they also don't put to many fish in one tank, they have 5 different tanks for oscars
@NinjanateKitty similar at my petsmart. they're rats are in nice clean cages, with the right bedding, water bottles always full and i see lab blocks along with sun flower seeds in their food bowls. also rats are very rarely kept solitary there, they are always kept in pairs. i've only seen 1 rat there solitary and that was the dumbo i got and he was solitary because the other dumbo didn't get along with him.
I bought a leopard gecko from PetCo just yesterday and he's perfectly healthy.

i got my okeete corn snake from petco. i listened to the care sheet they gave me because he was my first snake and aside from the stuff i learned from my girlfriend and her snake, monty, i didn't know much about the appropriate temperature, feeding, shedding, etc. he's a little over a year old now, he's about 23 inches long, he sheds great, he's a great eater, he's very healthy.
the only thing i have against petco is their small selection of snakes and tank sizes...and prices.

That's bullshit. Every pet store I've been to uses reptile carpet. While they arn't the best conditions for the animals they are supposed to be temporary habitats. So if you want to help stop bitching and go provide a caring home for these animals. Also do your research before buying any animal. I read four books before getting my baby bearded dragon (from petSmart) and he has grown two inches in a month and is enjoying a safe habitat because I knew of impaction problems before I bought him.

I actually agree. The way Petco treats many of their animals are terrible. I work at PetSmart, and while I don't believe we take the absolute best care of them at PetSmart either, we do much better than Petco.
:( I've seen dead beardies there, on sand (still being young), tons of dead fish, extremely soiled water in bird cages, hamsters with wettail... and I have yet to see one where the employees seem nice/ knowledgeable.

As a Petco employee, i get very frustrated with this kind of scrutiny over pet stores. We try to provide the best for the animals that we carry on a minimal budget and do everything we can to find a good pet home for them as quickly as possible. The problem is with the people that assume a good FOREVER habitat for an animal is similar/exactly like the ones in the store. Those are only their temporary homes, its up to the knowledgeable consumer to provide the rest. Also, terrible song.

Our Petco is great. They are very caring about the pets they have there. Cages are clean and animals always have food and water which is more than I've seen at some mom and pop stores. They are very knowledgeable about their reptiles and just today I saw them turn down 3 different people who wanted to buy an aquarium and fish at the same time and they told them to go home and set up their tanks first and come back in a few days when the tank has had time to settle.

Honestly, I belive it is WHAT store youre buying your pets at. See, at my Petsmart, they take very good care of their animals. I go there very often and everytime they have clean bedding and food and water. They never put to many animals in 1 tank, at the most 4 in 1 tank. Once, there was a guinea pig there. I really wanted him but I couldnt have him. I knew that he would be gone the next time. He want. He was there a few times after then finally sold. They never hide anything in the back.

PetCo is awful. I went there and got a rat, was told a ten gallon tank was fine; I later found out each rat should have two feet of space. They have 15+ rats in a 20 gallon tank. Also, ALL the rodents they have the sell as live food for reptiles, even the more intelligent ones. The rats they sell there are as intelligent as dogs. They do tricks, can be litter box trained, respond to orders, are extremely affectionate, and they sell them as live bait. It's disgusting. Don't believe me, google it.

my guinea pig is from Petco and our Petco is HUGE! Every animal has a giant cage and i havent seen 1 hurt/sick animal there. My friend works there and people always say
"the dying animals are left in the back"
thats NOT TRUE
They have an onsite veterinarian to care for each animal.The vet comes in and treats the animals and humanely euthanizes any animal that cant be saved.
I dont know what Petco/smart your going to but ive seen some amazing places that CARE for their animals!

I've seen too many dead and dying fish. I've seen dead fish in an open container left in plain site to customers. Dead and dying rodents in crowded cages. Too many sick, dead and dying birds. I've seen unhealthy reptiles in unfit conditions. I've reported it to employees to do something. They never do anything.

If you know so little about an animal that you would take advice from a minimum wage employee in a large chain petstore, you probably shouldn't be buying the animal anyway.
Furthermore, anyone with half a grain of sense would buy their pets from small breeders that really know their animals. That way that you know exactly where your animal came from and don't get any horrific surprises.

Maybe a couple of pet stores near you get their animals from local breeders, but they most likely are backyard breeders and inexperienced. Besides that, 99% of the small animals come from mills such as "Rainbow World Exotics". Look it up, it is a mass breeding mill. Try not looking at one specific pet store, but all of them combined together.

Consider a fish's lifespan when being transported and how easy it is to breed a majority of the fish that exist as staple breeds for a pet store.

So. All the animals at PETCO are very well housed. Leopard geckos should be on sand as it is what their (THIS IS THE CORRECT FORM OF THE WORD YOU ILLITERATE IDIOT) natural habitat has. Only the brand name Vita Sand is safe, however, the others will cause impaction. Do your research better. Also there are no 5 gal tanks at PETCO. They are 10 and 20 gal tanks for reptiles and 15 gal tanks for fish. All animals go through PETCO pretty fast, so the tanks don't need to be bigger. Also, learn English.

It sounds like you don't know very much about animals.... Yes there leopard geckos are on sand, and sand is a very popular choice for leos. It may cause some major problems, and may not be the best choice, but is that really reaon to hate them? Plus, outside of that, I have found most of their other habitats to be just fine. And yes, there is shit in the cages. Animals shit. Unless there is a person standing by, waiting for each and every animal to defecate so they can remove it, you'll see it.

I hate to say it, but petsmart is not any better. My aunt bought me two birds from there, and we had to take them back because they were mean. She spent over 100 dollars from a private seller, just so I could have calm birds. I have never been to petco, but petsmart isn't any better. I did have a hamster from there, and it lives for 3 years, longer than a normal hamster life.

Also. I have down exactly as I was told with all my animals. I don't mistreat any of the animals I have ever had, have, or will have. i go to petsmart and see the state of their aquatic turtle tank and get angry and i go to petco and see their turtles habitat and immediately get jealous. then have an hour long talk with someone who actually has a freaking clue. and the end result is that petco > petsmart

I...disagree. I used to work at Petco. Of course, every store has employees who really don't care about their job (even when there are other lies at stake), but I know that I, for one, was a diligent employee. I cared about the animals, and most of my coworkers did as well. Someone already mentioned, the small-sounding tanks and cages are there because they're TEMPORARY. The idea is that someone will buy the animal and put it in a good size enclosure. Oy.

@dreamer07079 I agree, I work at PetSmart, and they are ONLY for TEMPORARY use! And we DO care about the animals! And we have to go through training before we are even allowed to interact with any of the pets!

Petco is more expensive, but doesnt care about there animals at all... i know cuz i used to work there! they act like its a clothing store, and worry of the costumers and what they can sell. GO TO PETSMART or a shelter!

(1) All pet stores in chains are different. (2) The animals are only being housed there temporarily until purchased. (3) You still have to research needs for a specific type of animal and not rely on a regular person being paid minimum wage to give you truthful information. (4) You need to stop getting animals until you clean your disgusting house and put some socks on because your feet are nasty.

Alot of people say HORRAIBLE things about Petsmart and Petco, and even though I hated alot of Petsmarts for awhile, It all depends on the people working there and the condition of the animals there in at that store...Don't stereotype the whole company just because of the things you seen in one store. It's mostly the employees but make sure you do some research before you you buy an animal from any store.

i got a Russian tortoise for Christmas and hes healthy and petco is so awesome that they gave us a free water bowl and right now he is very healthy and dont leave your box on the floor

at petsmart is bad i went their to get a guiea pig and their wher 3 guinea pigs one guinea pig was dying the other one was sick no food hay all over the ground their was a fly in their waiting for one guinea pig to die then i saw one the was a baby guinea pig and i picked him to save him he is healthy as can be he is happy,fat,and poops a lot he can make a pile of poop in a day

But seriously, if you know that sand causes impaction, then don't use it. That's the employee's fault for being a dumbass and your fault for listening. I also love how you call your garter snake boring, as if to say "Why couldn't this have died instead of something interesting?" Maybe it wasn't Petco that was responsible. Five gallon tanks are fine for display until the animal grows up.

a lot of pet stores r like this but remember they r selling the pets to you not keeping them as pets but it is true they should be kept better. I just went to petsmart today and the fish were in the best of care, although over priced at petsmart they clean the tanks everyday and keep the tanks in certain condition depending the what the fish likes as in densely planted in some and some not, and they also don't put to many fish in one tank, they have 5 different tanks for oscars

@NinjanateKitty similar at my petsmart. they're rats are in nice clean cages, with the right bedding, water bottles always full and i see lab blocks along with sun flower seeds in their food bowls. also rats are very rarely kept solitary there, they are always kept in pairs. i've only seen 1 rat there solitary and that was the dumbo i got and he was solitary because the other dumbo didn't get along with him.
