a very underrated guitarist and songwriter, been listening to him since I was a teenager living in Italy. First Moore track I have heard was The Loner, blew my mind away, still does. From which Irish traditional tune is the beginning from? I love Irish music too
Great track :) I really love the original version, this one... But damn! Listenning to this I just can't help but think that this track begged to have a Symphonic Metal cover. Just listen to all the stuff going on in this track. It just had to be done :P
To be honest, I love Nightwish, I love Moore, and on this song there are differences, but I really can't see much of a difference aside from Moore's more folk sound, and Nightwish's symphonic metal sound.
I like Nightwish's version better overall because THAT version brought out the intent of this song. It has the symphonic metal sound elements written in it. I guess you could say that this song was a victim of being in the eighties. Like "Danger Zone" (Top Gun) It has that sound.
Either way, I like this version still. I thought it was going to sound worse, but it still has those little things in it I liked that made it up in the first place. :D
@gredangeo The intent? What are you talking about? This song has a very strong Irish theme like many of Gary's other songs. Nightwish completely ignored this for their cover so you are totally wrong.
@bobokk That's why it's called a cover. Supposed to be different. They made it to suit their sound, it's not a tribute. Second if you are referring to the Irish sound as that 12/8 "skipping" time feel They are the same. Both songs have a lot in common. They just put a symphonic metal genre twist to it.
@gredangeo No I'm not referring to that. The melodies all throughout this song are based in Irish/Gaelic music (the part from 2:27 being the most obvious example). If you can't hear that then you should educate yourself more.
@hugokid1 There's a traditional English folk song called "Over the Hills and Far Away", dating back to at least the 1600s. It's completely different from Led Zeppelin and Gary Moore's songs, but both were probably inspired by it in some way.
@oldrichflorian Okay, saying that you don't like Nightwish's symphonic power metal is one thing, but saying that a TRAINED OPERA SINGER'S VOICE is like squealing? Please.
@gamerlayne No, you are completely wrong. I like opera voices, but compared to really good opera singers is Tarja nothing. Tarja's voice is much overrated.
my god!! just heard this version the first time , never knew it was a cover.... its FRIGGIN AWESOME!!! I love it!!! His voice completes it, now the song makes a lot of sense!!!! The guitar is too 'folkloristic" to be made by nightwish, and the lyrics now make sense!!!! WOW its amazing!! thanks for uploading :)
Oh and about the Friggin comments im seeing, why don't you idiots just stop comparing... they're both good... that's why they're both famous.
compared to nightwish's version i must admit i prefer this one but the guy could have atleast smiled for his photo on his album, no one wants to buy an album with the picture of a scottish guy who has the face of a slapped arse
i am gonna do a cover of this great song, as a tribute to the god of guitar, Gary Moore(Rip) i will do this original instead of the nightwish version(like all guitarists do). it took me a lot of time to figure the solo, but all the time was worth it. thank you all and pls check out my channel. gary rocks!
i first heard the nightwish-version and then my brother told me that this was the original. i think the nightwish-version is pretty good , this one just has more edge to it^^ so plz people don t argue, just enjoy the music, i m sure thats what gary had in mind when he wrote this^^
Just realized something horrible... the protagonist probably failed to protect his lover.
If his pistol was planted after a robbery, someone probably framed him. His friend must have found out, and having been betrayed so thoroughly, was thirsty for revenge. So even though he refused to give an alibi, the friend must know.
i'm a metalmaniac since i was born and i like gary moore AND YOU WILL NEVER HEAR SOMETHING LIKE THIS AGAIN Y QUE VIVA MEXICO CABRONES FUCK YEAHH.........FUCK NIGHTWISH
i'm a metalmaniac since i was born and i like gary moore AND YOU WILL NEVER HEAR SOMETHING LIKE THIS AGAIN Y QUE VIVA MEXICO CABRONES FUCK YEAHH.........
Gotta say, I can't stand the Nightwish version compared to this. Not that it's a bad cover, I appreciate they did something different with it. Just not my taste.
Anyway, probably my favourite Gary Moore song. More Irish folk music should be played on the electric guitar. RIP Gary, keep rocking.
slate me if you must, this version is quite kick ass, but its a love song unless im wrong, and i feel that it sounds if a girls singing like nightwish
Holy mother! This song was released on my birth year but it's still great even it's very old compare to my country (Thai) new age rock bands (which is very popular). Damn, I'm realized how the "Thai Hardcore" and most Thai new age rock shitty is.
BTW, I'm not actually fan of this genre, I prefer power and viking/folk metal but this is one of the most cool song I've ever listened and I love it.
@CoolKwstas123 Most of them only ever heard the Nightwish version, and most people dont look songs up, give them a break, hell I thought Land of Confusion was written by Disturbed until I heard the origional, and just like this song, I love both. Chill out.
I think that Gary Moore's video is more true to the lyrics of this song. I like the 3 versions of this tune on YT. (Nightwish, Moore and Thryfing). Could kid offspring to the curb for videotaping over my MTV videos from the 80's. Had some choice music collected!!
One of my very favorite songs from the late Gary Moore. This song is composed in a very cool Irish key signature, love the composition, the lyrics, love the Irish violins and unison between Gary and the violin players before the main lead. Beautiful lead guitar on ouitro. Gary was beautiful guitar player... R.I.P. Gary Moore, may your Irish soul Rest In Peace...
