From both a statistical point of view and one that looks at intangibles Michael comes out head and shoulders above the rest. There are no comparisons. Basketball today is still intense, but the level of intensity when Micheal played was at an all time high, the NBA was at it's peak, teams hated each other, rivalries were personal, and Micheal still dominated. Kobe may, and i said may, be able to match the stats of Micheal but the atmosphere of competition can't be matched. The style of basketball was also different and there were different types of stars as well. Most of the stars now are guards/forwards, whereas back then there were a lot of dominant centers..

And they've made it easier for perimeter players to score and yet he still doesn't score with the easy or field goal percentage mike did. Kobe's played more playoff and regular season games than Mike yet he trails MJ in all statistical categories except turnovers and 3's attempted. and he trails by a lot in every category. He's still almost 6000 points behind MJ.

Basketball today is still intense, but the level of intensity when Micheal played was at an all time high, the NBA was at it's peak, teams hated each other, rivalries were personal, and Micheal still dominated. Kobe may, and i said may, be able to match the stats of Micheal but the atmosphere of competition can't be matched. Saying Kobe is better than Micheal is like saying a successful rock band today is better than the Beatles in the 60's, they just don't compare.

He's kind of right. They were both dominant in different eras. However, I tip my hat off to Jordan because he played when the league was under tougher rules. Kobe never faced the kinds of defensive stops that the Celtics or Pistons had back then and I doubt he could drop 63 points against a championship caliber team in the playoffs on the road like Jordan did.

So it would be VERY difficult to determine who is the best player because of the different circumstances. To a high extent, the answer to the question is highly subjective and is pointless to debate about unless a clear definition is set for "best."

This coach gave a really answer regarding this question. How do you define "best" between basketball players? Better scorer, rebounder, efficiency (which system?), most championships, etcetc. A lot of things can't be measured by stats especially on the defensive end. The style of basketball was also different and there were different types of stars as well. Most of the stars now are guards/forwards, whereas back then there were a lot of dominant centers..

Thus hundreds of MJ drives to the rim resulting in dunks and lays because the defense would have to rotate. Now guys can sit in the lane or zone off around the foul and wait for you. Yes you can't touch guys when they are above the foul line but offensive players can't be as physical either.
