Hi. I have some mental disorders and I wanted a service dog for my special brain. The thing is how will I be able to train my dog when I can't ever think myself?
@DeaneRenata Service dogs should be trained by a certified professional service dog trainer through a recognized organization. You cannot train a dog yourself and claim it's a service dog. This is for your safety as well as a way to protect the rights of those with disability so not any average joe can claim their dog is a service dog.
Could you please correct the title of this video so that it doesn't call this dog a service dog? There is enough confusion already. Training for service dogs is highly specialized and is done based upon the individual needs of a specific disabled person. Supervised separation is an item on the CGC. The CGC is NOT the standard of training for SDs. It is a test of basic obedience, that's all.
CruizinSuzan and ayu200 - thanks to both of you for your comments. It's very frustrating to have this confusion in public and when you have invisible disabilities people are constantly calling your service dog a therapy dog even though the vest clearly identifies her as a service dog. Either that or they sympathize with you for giving up the dog you are training then you have to explain it all to them. Oh well . . .
I'm confused. The title says service dog training but therapy dogs are not service dogs. Service animals help individuals with disabilities and have public access rights under the ADA. Therapy dogs help many and don't have access rights unless invited.
Actually, a service dog should be trained far, far beyond this level of obedience. Using the terms "service dog" and "therapy dog" interchangeably does create problems with public access. People with therapy dogs MUST have permission to enter any public building, service dogs are legally permitted anywhere their handler goes. I use a service dog, and not only is he trained far beyond what a therapy dog is trained to do, this sort of job title mix up does give us problems in public.
