This is not even a patch on the Chic based version. But it is a fantastic record made by fantastic musicians who, in equal measure squared, I am lesser than.
But there is always someone cleverer, more beautiful in droves.
It is such a shame that she did not blow up in the US as well as the UK. Far too many people push people like Joss Stone as UK R&B , which is a joke. Beverley has an amazing voice and this is, in my opinion one of her best songs.
@Wonderwoman79G Your slight @ Joss is ill-fitting but understandable. Can't fault u for your opinion. Gladys peaked during times when Whitney, Mariah, Aaliyah, Toni, Janet, were the new female faces of RnB backed by heavy machines. Mind you this was a resurgence for her, started charting in 1978- to be blunt, "older"! Though she was more talented than most if not all, she wasn't as "marketable", hardcore RnB fans knew better tho & she has the last laugh with 4 decades charting!
@dmacontop My opinion is not ill-fitting. At the time Beverly had this song out singers like Beverly ( talented singers , who can actually sing and are soulful ) were not promoted as well as other artists in the UK R&B scene. Even Beverly briefly mentioned it in an interview at one point. I think that Joss Stone can sing and but I was talking about the politics of the time. Having said that, there is still a lot of poor management of talented R& B singers in the UK.
@Wonderwoman79G Artists complain always even MJ! MY POINT IS, 94 BK needed to show growth, carve her own lane but chose conformity. In RnB/Soul/Hiphop, UK scene, if labels dont think you can sell in US, promo is little bcz thats where the consumer is for that sound for non-crossover artists.The competition pool in 94 alone suggests an excess of younger sexier artist who INDEED proved more marketable. Arie 02, Winehouse 06, Adele 12,etc. all rewarded for a "different sound" atypical of the trend
@Wonderwoman79G Fast foward to 2004 Joss has the most "unique" soul/RnB (in UK) sound of that year and like my earlier examples got positive critical recognition and won awards. Heavy marketing does not guarantee sales and awards, being fresh on the scene helps but reinventing yourself and branding your sound after debuting album is key. I love Beverly talented as she was, she was deep in the pack blending in
