  • In the Yorkshire Television portrait of Eric Fenby, (Song of Farewell), he is seen walking with his wife into the distant sun. An image quite similar to Ken Russels closing images of a solar eclipse as the credits/title of his film are presented.

(The eclipse evocative of the darkenss case by the the death of Delius/the artist-composer).

Well you have to see both the end of "Song of Summer"(Russell) and the End of "Song of Farewell" (Yorkshire TV Broadcast).

  • @Marvelouscortex Take your point a closure symbolising how everything has its day then fades away. In Fenby Farewell a journey through the seasons Summer to Autumn symbolises the progression through life with its 'silent backward tracings' unto one's ultimate closure on what we know. Posted Ken's film on this channel apart from a few seconds of Laural and Hardy at the beginning Please take a look and note what a fitting end that eclipse effect gives A work of art!!!

  • Thanks so much for these kind comments 'Uncle Ken' was a regular visitor to our Delius Society Facebook page. I flatter myself that he just might have taken a peep..... Delius' lovely music becomes even more poignant as we increasingly feel the enevitable transience of life and savour those 'sweet backward tracings' all the more! Your words mean so much to me.

  • Alas, I am quite sure Ken Russell would duly credit all these images and be most pleased. As would of course, Delius and Fenby. Indeed Fenby and Delius must surely have carried many of these very images in their lives/minds until the end.
