Danny Kaye's version from 1952 was "Dina from Carolina," pronouned Deena from Caroleena. His daughter's name was spelled Dena, my parents liked the song, I was born, and Voila! I was named Dena.
Louis Armstrong only had to pronounce about 3 words and his version is still leagues past ol' Bing's. He has this line where he just repeats Dinah, and it gives me chills every time.
Hey Bing1903, do you remember that song on the Bugs Bunny cartoons that Bing sang. I think it was called "You must have been a beautiful baby"? Is that the title and do you have it? I have looked for that song for many years.
Crosby, at the time that he was doing the singing that would put him in the MUSIC (as opposed to ENTERTAINMENT) history books, in the company of the Mills Bros., at the point in their career where they were the GREATEST a capella vocal group in the world.
Bing Crosby originally wanted to be a jazz singer like Louis Armstrong. In fact He always said that Armstrong was His favorite singer. He helped resurrect Armstrongs career by having Him be in the movie Pennies From Heaven.
If You live in the New York City area there is a show on Sunday night from 9 to 12PM called the Big Broadcast. It comes from Fordham University. WFUV FM station in the lower 80's. Rich Conaty is the DJ.
Anyone who deems Bing Crosby as the voice of suburban American blandness needs to listen to this and many other of his early records ("Out Of Nowhere," "Just One More Chance," "Brother Can You Spare A Dime") to appreciate just what an exciting, innovative, jazz-influenced singer he was in the early '30s. (There's an alternake take of "Dinah" that was issued in Europe and is nearly as good as this one.)
Besdies being the greatest singer he was the greatest singer-musician. He should have copyrighted all his singing. This guy is walking around Heaven singing like this and no wonder we never hear from God.
In my ledger BING CROSBY was the GREATEST ENTERTAINER of the 20th Century! Bar none, period & pointblank! And on this classic he had the super talented Mills Brothers on his team! WOOOOOOOW! ... I also enjoy the Al Jolson w/ Eddie Cantor rendition, oh yeah! Thanks for the memories ~ BC03
I actually happen to have it on a 78... ill try to transfer and upload it fairly soon if anyone would like, might be on the tube somewhere aleady though, idk...thanks for listening!

You just can't beat Bing. But Benny Goodman's quartet does a damn good job.

That is great, but I think no one can beat the Boswell Sisters' Dinah!

This isn't a very good transfer; try the ones done by John R. T. Davies on "Jonzo."

Comparing Bing with Louis is like to compare Paul Whiteman with Duke Ellington !

@fiddlenut24 Incorrect. Robert Johnson was the greatest singer in American history.

He was a HUGE investor in the then-new multitrack studio technology. He invested in several areas.

@Georgewos I'm just curious, is there any reason why you keep capitalizing 'He' and 'Him'?
