10" wide rim with 215's... what the fuck... My 10" wide rim has a 285 on it. I don't understand tire stretching, unless you just have a slow piece anyways.
@UOYtaLOL Really popular with the VW crowd around here. Allows the wheel to stick out further without rubbing issues. Im a Ford guy so I dont understand it either, but it looks pretty good on the right car.
@dwnrety1 google euro style and you should understand... here in europe, the top of the tyre cannot stick out of the arches (something you folk in America dont have to abide by)... Stretching tyres means you can drop the car on its arse, with wide rims and keeping the tyres under the arches ;)
@jamesjamz Thanks man, I wondered about that.It does have an interesting look to it, but I figured there must be some reason people were doing it.Can you install fender flares on your arches if you want wide tires?
@heliarche you can do, but they don't look good... much easier to stretch the tyre so it all fits in the arch.... Euro style is all about being smooth.
stretching has been around since the 70s its big in japan for asthetic purposes and it also means you can buy cheaper smaller tyres and still get it on your wicked wide rims among many other reasons i love it its pretty ingenious and looks phat on a decent drift car or oldschool 80s jap car and german sedans
@noxabellus A lot of people who have wheel spacers and "still want their lowz" will stretch tires. it allows them to go low without having tire rub on the fenders. overall, it's a really bad idea and pretty dangerous, but to certain demographics, it's a must. Most shops won't do stretching due to liability issues.
lol I have to do this sh** every day by myself. Hate busting tires for a living . . . I have to say the worst one I've done was a load range E 10 ply 31x10.5 on a 12 inch rim. 41's are fun if you don't have anyone to help, just be sure to spit on it first and call it dirty names and it'll do what you tell it to.
isnt the whole concept on stretching tires to eliminate tire flex? i mean thats the only reason i see behind it, that and fitting the big wheels under your fenders without rubbing
@Talas36 less expensive for a narrower tire, can let you run bigger wheels on your car without as much trouble with rubbing and make the sidewalls not flex as much cuz they're already flexed
@MegaCamshaft the original purpose for stretching tires is because in Europe for you order to pass MOT inspection there cannot be any tread pass the wheel wells so in order for them to run wider wheels, they had to stretch their tires.
@MegaCamshaft Exactly, they look crap and are down right dangerous. Besides, why go to all the trouble of tuning a car and then stick skinny tyres on it so it handles like a dog?
@VolkswagOwned it is NOT a vw thing at all, it is a jap thing. 'stretch and poke' as it is known originated in the drift scene. you run wheels with a massive offset and stretch a smaller tyre over them so you clear the arches. this means you have a wider rear track which gives more stability when drifting, also smaller tyres are cheaper and when your shredding a set a session cheaper is better. jeeeese people know nothing.
just vanity, tyres look cool when the side wall is angled slightly out towards centre, this is a bit far though, generally it improves things but the sides on this may rupture.
@MegaCamshaft if your tyres are rubbing on the arches cause the wheels are a bit wide for the car strechin smaller tyres on the rims should sort out the problem.. not sure if that is why they are doing it but thats what i did.
That tyre isn't exactly 'on there' is it. The whole thing with stretching tyres over wide wheels started in Europe. The reason was that the tread had to be covered by the wheels arch. This made fitting wide wheels difficult especially as wide arch kits were out of fashion. The solution was to bend the rules. Wide wheels with narrow tyres pulled over them. It has all got bit extreme now and some people seem to have lost the plot with it.
yeah lots of modified VW carrado owners use stretched tires to fill that kind of wide arch.looks well on most BMWs too. looks well really on any car with a pretruding arch.
@PalomarWater: Shortest explanation I can give is that you should google images of cars with stretched tires or you can even google 'hellaflush'. Nuff said.
damn people every place that sells big truck tires has one of these we use it to mount truck tires called the cannon it just sends a large burst of air in the tire at once
Gotta love the compressed air box (that's what I call it). We had one at NTB called "the panther". It shoots a lot of air super fast so you can mount smaller or bigger tires (originally invented for truck tires)
some people also stretch tires mecuase it makes the sidewall stiffer, which i cant remmeber exactly what thats good for, i want to say drifting but not sure exactly
sorry but do some research before you think everything comes from drifting, fast and furious..
The whole thing started in Germany/Belgium, local laws required that the tire tread be within the fender line. well that doesnt allow one to run wider or lower offset wheels, so they put narrower tires on the wheel to maintain legality.
i work in a garage and i know that after a tire is stretched and on the car for about a week once u break it down (pop the bead) the tire stays stretched to the width of the rim......it does not go right back like an elastic
There is absolutely no proof to say that stretched tyres are more unsafe than non stretched tyres and they can handle heavy duty turning as they are used on drift cars, its nothing about not being able to afford the right sized tires either, you need to buy a high quality tire for it to be able to stretch, like a toyo tyre for example, and they cost quite a lot so dude you need to go do a little bit more research before putting people down....
its not a difficult stretch I run 235/35/r18's on 18x11" and 295/45/r18s on 18x14" reason for stretching can vary for the look (on race themed show cars looks very aggressive) or drifters running cheaper tyres in nz we dont get a big selection in anything 295 or wider so its more cost effective for drifting for us privateers with no sponsors
the second number in a tire size (225/40ZR18 for example) is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the tread width. so 225 millimeters wide, 40% of 225mm in height, mounted on an 18 inch rim.
all you wee lads still swimming in your daddy's sack when gearheads did this back in the day. yes, this is old skool way nothing new!oh yeah spot on mate ,nice job!
finally someone does it right, i dont know who likes this look, but at least they did it without destroying the tires inner liner
