Crows heckle and gang up on hawks all the time. Hawks usually don't eat them, they just blow them off and keep flying. I guess this hawk got fed up and decided it was tired of being heckled.
Aww hit a nerve.... How bout u go jump off a tall building and if u dont like what was said in the vid the u should have filmed it....but since it's my vid I'll say what ever I want!!!!
female coopers hawk, he took his eye off the ball for just one second while you pounded pots and pans together and missed a great learning experience for your daughter. Life feeds on life, and although it seems cruel, that is our interpretation. The strong survive, and the crow saw its chance and broke free
Crows are always in flocks, and will protect their family at whatever costs. You could see the other crows sweeping down at it from the sky. The hawk then decided to give it up.
nature happened!!!! bleeding hearts of the world unite and lets stop nature!!!! gah you ppl are so lost. how do you think the world's living things have survived for millions of years? with hugs? by eating tofu? come on. get your heads outta your rears and realize that eating meat, animals hunting each other is natural. if it wasn't then none of us would be here.
They were not fighting. The hawk was trying to kill the crow to eat it. Hawks grab their prey with their claws by the neck and dig their claws into it's neck and wait for it to die. Then they pluck the feathers out, then eat the meat (like you eat Kentucky Fried Chicken).
Crows cant catch an adult bird, but they will eat their eggs and baby birds. Crows interrupt the nesting of nearly every species of birds. Crow populations are pretty big because off humans activity. (Trash, leavings, other mess with food on it) so humans are the ones who have to help the other birds by reducing those crows.
That said, I do actually like crows--but I also understand and accept that they pose a threat to the interests of people.
I'm of the opinion that it should be legal to keep rescued crows as pets. There are people who do so, perhaps without knowing the legal issues--but those crows are loved and well cared for.
At the same time, their removal from the wild meets the same end as those who would kill crows--reducing the wild population. Only here, the crow lives a happy life with humans.
I cant quantify the amount of crows that should be killed to offset the damage they do, but these control measures are not what I am referring to as evidence of hatred of crows. I am talking about a emotional reaction by people who have no stake in protecting crops or anything else from crows. The crow animal evokes a visceral negative reaction in many people that has nothing to do with any actual harm that crows do. And then these people go looking for reasons to justify their feelings.
TRAVISTOWN: And yet I've seen just as many crow lovers. Can't this love also be visceral?
I've seen the same attitudes concerning starlings. Some people keep them as pets and can't understand why others think of them as filthy or dirty birds. Those that do hate starlings often hate them for reasons similar to hating crows.
In the end, it's instructive to understand that humans will prefer one type of animal over another, even if it doesn't actually cause them any financial/personal harm.
I own two starlings and a crow. The starlings are wonderful birds, always playful, always up to no good, same as the crow.
Crows get rid of a LOT of bugs and pests, as do starlings. My crow kills rats and then proudly brings them to me to share. The starlings kill bugs and also bring them to me, and will dismember them on my lap. Pretty gruesome, but also totally endearing. I dare you to find the cat or dog who offers to share his meal with you.
Something else, concerning TRAVISTOWN's attempt to downplay the destructiveness of crows by claiming that bluejays do the exact same thing:
Yes, bluejays do, rarely, eat the eggs and nestlings of songbirds. That's the key word here, though: RARE. Crows are more predatory in that regard, and the eggs and nestlings of songbirds make up a more significant part of their diet, when they can get it.
EbonyWaters: You're just trying to tie together unrelated facts into a rationalization for your accusations.
The origin for the term "murder of crows" is vague, but the most agreed-upon theory is that the term arose from observing flocks of crows "murdering" a dying crow.
That has nothing to do with human war or conflict. You seem to desperately want to label perfectly justifiable reasons for controlling crow populations as irrational, just like TRAVISTOWN.
EbonyWaters: Yes, I am trying to say the hate is rational--and I have seen plenty of people on YouTube videos arguing with people like you on the grounds that crows are a pest.
The idea of crows being "ugly" or "filthy" is tied into this--they don't hate them because they think them ugly, they call them ugly and filthy because they see them as vermin and pests for the damage they do.
Hawks eat other birds and nobody hates hawks. Even squirrels occasionally eat birds. I do agree that sparrows and starlings are strong competitors to other birds for nest cavities. But the widespread hatred of crows is not supported by any legitimate reason. It is a human reaction to the outspoken bossiness of crows.
I was going to talk about lions and tigers being respected by humans even though they kill humans, and the whole insect consuming thing, but it seems you've covered it. Thanks. : )
EbonyWaters: He covered it wrongly. Crows cause more damage than they prevent due to their impartial scavenging.
Use some common sense. The Migratory Bird Act wouldn't make an exemption for killing crows if they didn't "commit depredations upon ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock, or wildlife, or when concentrated in such numbers and manner to constitute a health hazard or other nuisance."
We wouldn't have a market for crow population control if they posed no threat.
Hatred of crows is irrational, and people make up reasons to justify the hatred. Crows are not as much of a consumer of ag crops as many people say. Furthermore, they tend to compensate for the ag crops they consume by also eating insects and vermin that will eat ag crops. Grackles consume a lot more ag crops than crows do. Crows are no more of a competitor to other birds than many of those birds are to each other. Crows may occasionally eat bird eggs or baby birds, but so do blue jays.
TRAVISTOWN: Again, hatred of crows is perfectly rational. There are records kept by farmers in many industries that gauge the damage done by crows (as well as other birds). Millions of dollars in damage is an underestimation than an overestimation.
They continue to do significant damage to crops, warranting the continued development of control methods.
You can't turn a blind eye to this truth. If you do, you are only demonstrating that you're the truly irrational person, not crow haters.
I have never seen a crow be nasty. Sure they can talk nasty. They can use their voice as a weapon. Crows will gang up on an owl and insult it until it leaves. Crows are incredibly fearful of humans, but they honor each other. A crow will give a fellow crow the shirt off his back. Crows will tell you that the case for hating crows is a human weakness.
Oh gee, everyone hates crows. I think it's cause their intelligence can make them seem like "pests". I think it's also because of their black plumage. :/ People should get over these old fashioned superstitions.
All crows are different, some are nasty troublemakers, some are altruistic. There was this one crow that fed and took care of an abandoned kitten. (You can go youtube it for the video.)
EbonyWaters: Contrary to popular belief among crow lovers, it is not due to superstition that crows are disliked and hunted. They cause real problems for farmers--they always have.
People who love a certain species of animal will naturally detest another species that hunts it in any form.
Again, see how purple martin lovers hunt and kill starlings and sparrows to keep those birds from killing baby purple martins.
Yes crows will sometimes eat baby birds or bird eggs, but so do blue jays, owls, hawks, and a lot of other birds. Squirrels sometimes eat birds. It is a bogus reason to hate crows. The real reason people hate crows is that crows have such strong opinions. Crows are the keepers of sacred law.
TRAVISTOWN: No, people do not hate crows because they are the keepers of sacred law.
Crows DO cause trouble for farmers by attacking farm animals and eating crops. They cause millions of dollars of damage to all kinds of crops. It is a legitimate reason to dislike crows.
They're DIRECT competitors to other wild birds. In nature, certain species WILL compete directly (see: purple martins attacked by sparrows and starlings). It is a legitimate reason to hate crows, for certain bird lovers.
Crows are extremely clever and intelligent. But they have such strong opinions and are so outspoken that they make humans feel insecure. Hence they are probably the most persecuted and hated animal.
Secondly, crows can be nasty bastards. A gang of them came to my backyard one day and kicked ass on the smaller birds. And then left. They didn't even do it to move in on the territory.
I've been an avid birder, for over 15+yrs now. And i have to say, Crow''s & Raven's, are EXTREMELY powerful birds. Hawk's usually will not attempt, to kill such a large bird like this. Especially Crow's since, were you find one Crow, you find MANY...!!! They help guard one another, from predators like this. However, even if a Hawk, takes a Crow alone, they know they have a big fight, on there hands. One hit from a Crow's beak, could change the balance very quickly. Cont next post........
and yet crows are among the preferred preys of the Northern Goshawk and they often kill them (especially the female who is large enough to take on other raptors).
good job crow. crow's are awesome birds that everyone hate for some stupid reason. they make tools. they stay in mating pairs. they drive away other pests. and they defend their homes. they protect smaller birds from predators like these.
Yes, because the first thing I think of when grabbing my camera out of the closet to film a shortly lived candid moment is.... "oh gosh, i had better take the time to setup and level my tripod to ensure that I get a clean and stable shot so people on youtube don't complain about this fleeting footage I'm about to take."
A hawk is unable to readily release its prey once it has clenched it talons. Note the violence of departure. The hawk did not intentionally release the crow.

Are you saying that hate IS rational?

No one does. Everyone I've met either said the're ugly or they're unlucky.

TRAVISTOWN: No, you're quite wrong. People have perfectly justifiable reasons for hating crows, as I've addressed to both of you.
Your attempt to personify crows as "bossy" only masks the fact that they are unrepentant scavengers that prey on anything and everything.
This makes them an enemy of songbird lovers, farmers, and gardeners.
It has for millennia.
Stop thinking the hate is irrational and accept that it is justified.
