I remember that accident. It was the (inert) bomb still connected to the bomb rack (that's why it flew funny) that separated from the F-18 then clipped the two-seat TA-4 chase plane wing. The TA-4 pilot saw it comming and tried to dodge it. The TA-4 subsequently burst into flames and the two crew ejected from out of the fireball. The bomb release test was being conducted over the Chesapeake Bay at Patuxtent Naval Air Station. It should be called "F-18 bomb release fiasco".

@justgetmeaname It's not clear from the video perspective but the TA-4 was below and behind the F-18 when the bomb and rack came loose and hit it (because it was following the F-18 and filming the bomb release test too). The video footage you're looking at was captured from a test ship in the Chesapeake Bay with cameras point UP at the test.

Hey this was on Destroyed in seconds show in Australia LOL. It showed much more footage and actual sound. It also showed the video in different angles and they said that planes have to be 30 feet away or something to watch a bomb drop. I think it was 30 feet or meters idk can't remember.

F-18 had an external tank come off because it wasn't properly fastened. The A-4 was flying in such tight formation the projectile hit it's wing and cause it to loose control.

Please change the title of this video to the correct name. An F18 was performing a stores seperation test when the store hit an "A-4."  The A4 was the aircraft that was destroyed.

The F-18 was testing a new type of bomb release system using a 250 lbs bomb (bomb was not live, it was filled with concrete). A vacuum was created between the F-18 and the spot plane due to their close vicinity to each other. The bomb followed in that vacuum and hit the spot planes wing. The copilot ejected nearly immediately but the pilot stayed in trying to save the plane. After this event they put a minimum distance limit between the test plane and the spot plane.

Even that show is wrong it was not a vacuum. The ejector rack that is mounted to the wing pylon is able to hold 2 bombs side by side. Anyway somehow the bomb was droped and the ejector rack is still attached to the bomb causing it  to vere right into the skyhawk. The camera mounted on the F-18 in other videos clearly shows it.

They don't really need to test the explosive force of bombs unless its completely new technology making it go 'BOOM'. They can just do a math problem and have an estimated explosive force. COmputer targeting systems arereplaced for new models practically every day...

It was a bomb test. The planes were so close to each other they created an air vortex and the bomb was sucked into it. I saw a show on TV that just showed the whole accident and what caused it.

I don't know about that. If that is the case then it wouldn't be a test of the bomb, but the targeting system. Obviously we can't tell from the video. If it was the targeting system, yes, it may be filled with sand. If it is a real bomb, they want to test the explosive force. Sand doesn't do that.
