I worked for a company on the Kanawha River named Madison Coal $ Supply. They bought the boat sometime before i was hired there. I believe its name is now the Catawba
\I am a towboat pilot. When that was originaly posted the people involved explained what happended. The turning loose of the tow was a planned event that was the reason for no injuries or deaths. Fortunately they had fueled the boat previously that day. This made the boat similar to a weeble that wobbles that doesnt fall down. The fuel created a low center of gravity and righted the boat when it went under the bridge. That is truely the defintion of living on the edge. T
@c0metkid Hey what kind of school does it take to be a towboat pilot and for how long. I think it is an interesting career and i was wondering if you would answer some questions for me. Thank you
@ringy17 unless you have fam already in the wheel house then it takes years, first you start out as a green hand work you way up, if you understand the concept of building tow you may get a mate position, after years of 1st mate you might get to start steering the boat while your on watch with the pilot or cap, and the possibility of you being with a cap that will let you steer is very low, so you have to get a certain amount of steern hrs under a cap before you can even atempt a pilot license
he was hauling a load right after a storm so the current was strong and he couldn't turn around and get away from the bridge so he dropped his load and let it slide under the brige as he closed his doors so that water couldn't get in then he turned it sideways and let the current roll him under then he flipped back rightside up and got his load and continued on down stream
it does not matter if the current was strong or not that was a river tug they have about 5,000 horse power they could of pulled away from that with no problem i worked on the mississippi river with currents like that on a river boat and they were no problem for the engines but thank God for water tight hatches
Ibisurfer1234, You have no clue what you just said.
For the real truth, why not ask the guy that was on the boat, or worked for the company that owned the boat.
Truth is, THAT boat is 1800hp, that was on the Black Warrior River. The bridge is no longer there. the man that was driving the boat died a few yrs ago. A " face wire " got hung & the guys could not get the wire off, so they ran to the boat & locked the doors. the boat hit the bridge & the wire broke. Boat horsepower 200-11000.
The boat is the MV Cahaba owned by Warrior and Gulf Navigation of Mobile, AL. The pictures were taken by an amateur photgrapher named Barger. This happened in April, 1979 at Demopolis, AL on the Warrior River. Nobody was seriously injured and the boat continued to it's destination with the barges. To my knowledge, the boat is still in service. The bridge has since been replaced.
Look at that shit, after all that they get the plant back up and make up to the barge again. LOL that must have been a Great lakes Maritime Academy Engineer. HA :)
Pretty amazing it didn't sink!

Congratulations to whoever designed that push boat! Apparently you can't sink it.
