  • wise dog

  • You had him for two and a half years? That is a short period of time. Did you adopt him late in his life?

  • @FatBird11

Irish Wolfhounds are known to have incredibly short lives (7yrs on average). Heart problems are the number 1 cause of death as far as I know. This is pretty much a universal problem with really large dogs.

  • We're (my girl friend and me) very sad for your loss. We love dogs; they certainly have a special place alongside man.

  • What a beautiful dog. Can you get a IW puppy? We all know the breed does not last very long and they leave such an emptiness in our hearts when they leave.

  • Heart aches watching your video... We are seeing our 6-year-old Finn start to slow down a bit, and make an effort to make every day we have with him a special one. I hope you haven't given up on the breed -- we brought in Shamus who is now 1-1/2, and is such a clown even Finn seems to be laughing at him...

  • 01:29, he's like "How dare you disturb me while I'm playing!" lol. I'm sorry for the loss. I have an Irish wolfhound. They're great dogs. And anyone who doesn't view this and get atleast a little heartbroken, doesn't have a soul.

  • Massive...I have a female wolfhound, Hemahema..she is 6 years old and mourning the loss of her mate, Jubbadub...euro mountain sheparnese from NZ..they had 5 litters 2gether, spread over Australia and NZ. She is putting on weight now due to mourning her hubby who died over a month ago..vids on hemahema88..You Tube..be blessed

  • having tears for this , losing a dog is so painfull :'(

  • it's sad when a dog dies. we had an irish wolfhound. if you search on KIng Balder you can see the video i made for our dog who past away a year ago :(

  • we're getting one in july...a male..because our female amercian bulldog needs a friend...cant wait..such a beautiful breed of dog

  • soo beautiful

  • thats an amazing dog!

  • He reminds me of our Lugh that we lost in September of 2007, he was just barely 2 years old. We lost him to DCM (enlarged heart).

  • they dont live long, but what great dogs, I am sorry for your loss

  • I can see that Butch was much loved in his short life. As magnificent as these gentle giants are, they have the shortest life expectancy of any members of the canine world. A 20 year study of Irish Wolfhounds showed an average lifespan of 6.47 years. Osteosarcomas are the most common killer but heart disease is also prevalent. Canine physiology was not meant for their organs to support such large bodies. Given this reality, it is almost a cruelty to breed dogs destined to die so young.

  • What a beautiful dog.

  • Wow.. I am in tears. :(

  • Im so sorry for your loss my IW Cluain died last year of bone cancer and I still miss her every day getting a new IW puppy on the 18th Jan so I will be back to trying to teach that kitchen table legs are not for chewing on

  • @16munster - Which goes for wodden stairs, baby toys, pretty much everything made of wood and plastic actually.

  • Beautiful Wolfhound, I am sorry for your loss, but at least you got to experience having one of these wonderful dogs in your life, I've always wanted one myself but they are not easy to find in my area:(

What is the name of this song playing with the video?

  • @WickedxHaze Some breeders will ship them anywhere in the USA. You just have to pay for the airline ticket.

  • I am sorry for your loss... I know how it feels to loose a dog. I hope you have taken in another dog, no matter what race, because there are so many dogs out there waiting for a needing and loving home. We did. We took on a Great Dane. They are - character-wise - like Wolfhounds. Great, loving creatures, gentles, elegant and funny. I really hope to see another video of you with another happy dog!

  • Irish Wolfhounds are the best dogs ever to me. They are so dignified and gentle. Great friends and a joy to know.

  • excellent dogs, an Irish Wolfhound has always been my dream dog. I can't wait to someday be owned by one:)

  • Nice pictures - they are incredibly special companions.

  • My fathers woflhound has just turned 14. He's not a pure breed, has some alsation/doberman in him, but looks just like a wolfhound, only a bit smaller. He's slowing down now...but still very happy. I put his long life down to the tremendous amount of love he has received his whole life...

  • What a beautiful coat. And such sad eyes. I love Irish Wolfhounds now, thanks.

  • WHAT A BEAUTY!!

  • I have 9 remaining, but lost all my 'middle pack of 5' within last 16 months - all between 7 and 9 years - two cancer, 3 heart disease...

    God love em.

  • can i ask you why irish wolfhounds have so much health issues.i just fell in love with this great dogs.i think they are amazing, but i don't understand why they have so much health problems.

sorry for your lost...must have been great dogs.

  • They, along with the Danes, are Giant Breeds. The root cause of bone cancer and heart failures at much earlier ages are not wholly understood.

Ours seem to live longer average age but we breed for speed and hunting instincts so ours ten to cross the Rainbow Bridge after 7. The five we lost were 3 to heart attacks, one to Cancer and one complications of a stroke (ages 8.5 , 7.5 and 6.5 on Heart, 8 on cancer, 10 on stroke)

Our pack now ranges from 11 to 1 with 5 at 3 yrs

  • I believe it's a combination of things, being a pedigree they are more susceptible to certain diseases anyway, so it's always good to look up a breeds most common health problems before you decide to make a commitment, you may not be able to afford veterinary bills.

Also, the taller dogs tend to be more prone to developing heart diseases, and since the irish wolfhound is the tallest breed of dog that would make it potentially the most vulnerable to these diseases. They have short life spanssadly

  • such a shame...they are just so amazing.

  • It's true, despite the risks i plan on setting myself up for one, i've been fascinated by these dogs since i was a kid :) can't wait to experience it.

  • sorry about your lost, got one out of the pound 4 days ago, said it a wheaton terrier mix, , shy is about 3 month old, best puppy i ever known, its 99 % irish wolfhound and we love her so much, what a intteligant dog.

  • "I feel your loss" He looked so cool.......... We have an Irish wolfhound, ( Doogan} and he is so gentle with the kids ....

  • thanks all for your kind words around 5 months before he left us he was diagnosed with heart faliure this was so devastating to us all again thankyou for the kind words

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I have a 7 1/2 year old red IW named Cormac. Everyday is so special with these wonderful creatures.

  • I have 2 Irish wolfhunds, they are both girls, but they are still very big

  • he's stunning

  • how old was he when he passed. i am sorry for your loss.

  • why not get another wolfie?

  • 2 1/2 years? Was that his age when he died? I'm very sorry. Do you mind telling us how?

  • He was beautiful indeed!

  • Im 13 years old and want to get one of these when Im older, or maybe I can convince my parents later on down the road. As of now I have a beautiful 10week old border collie, and hes my favorite dog ever! haha

  • It's hard to watch this because of the beautiful dog you had!

  • Poor guy; I am sorry you lost him way too young.

  • Butch looks just like my Irish Wolfhound, Bailee. Bailee passed away in February of 2007 from bone cancer in his hind two legs. He broke one of them and we had to put him to sleep. It was devastating, but this video reminds me of how perfect of a dog he was.

  • Aw. I'm so sorry for your loss. He was a beautiful dog

  • What a magnificent dog! We lost our Tess at 3 of bone cancer...she was the sweetest gentlest pup...now we have her two nieces...and they are monsters! If you watch "She hears the fog horn calling out across the sound..." you can hear her sing!
