You're doing it wrong. You don't fire bullets in this game. Ever. This game was rather boring for me as well until I stopped using bullets to kill enemies. It makes the game MUCH easier and gives you WAY more points in the process. Throw everything, and this game suddenly becomes worth the purchase price. It even makes it possible for a relative novice like myself to unlock 2/3 of the achievements including the no continue clear.

Additionally, there are 5 levels, not 4. And there are 3 hidden encounters and 2-3 additional phases for each boss, depending on how good you are.
And, really, "ThE" is one of the easier shmups around. I think most players that are willing to play this over and over would be able to pick up and be fairly decent (at least, on Normal) after a couple hours.
Only on Hard difficulty does this game even come close to other great shmups as far as difficulty. Overall, though "ThE" is great.
Wow, another terrible review. First off, how is unlimited continues bad? You do realize you're penalized for continuing, right?... as your score is reset to 0.
Not all games are meant just to play through, shmups are about getting highscores and/or getting as far as you can without continues(or how few continues you can use to beat the game). I HATE people that complain about unlimited continues in shmups, then call the game "too easy" due to the fact that they CAN continue all they want. :P

It seems hard until you release the player's and bullet's hitboxes are about two pixels.

Also, about throwable enemies for bosses, these usually appear on the later forms, you get more forms based on the number below your score and health
