I used to see L H & R every time they came to Toronto in the 50's and early 60's. My Buddy and I would get to the now defunct Town Tavern early Sat afternoons, catch the matinee and stay until their evening sets. They were absolutely magnificent. One afternoon after the matinee we had drinks with Dave and Annie at their hotel, great people and great company.
Those days are gone and we will never see another group to compare to them.
Man, I got goose pimples! They're so hip, all of them. The part, 'round minute 4, when Annie & Jon are singing a background to Dave's brilliant solo ... simply breathtaking. And Jon Hendricks ... so many wonderful ideas, Mr. Rhythm ... joy, pure joy!
I stumbled (gracefully) upon this page and renewed my love for Lambert Hendricks and Ross..Sometimes age has it's advantages.I saw both LHR and LH and Bavan many years ago at the Sutherland Lounge on 47th st. in Chicago. Always a tightly knit group. The setting at the lounge was like being invited to a cocktail party in a very large living room with just the right lighting.Admission then was about $5each. Those were the days my friends ..Who thought it would never end.
Finally!! Some brought me out of my cage! Un-Real. Hendricks destroyed everything I thought about music. Only to have Lambert Do it again. No words for this!!
Un-f--King-REAL! Only Dave Lambert could follow an incredible solo like Jon Hendricks delivered. Man oh man I wish I could have seen the three of them together live - but Lambert was gone way too soon. I'n lucky to own his solo lp - probably the rarest vinyl in my entire collection.
A biographer said Annie Ross and John Hendricks had a falling out and that was part of the reason she left the act. Wonder if there were creative differences or if he wanted to tour more than she did.
Probably one of the most amazing jazz performances of all time.

When I was a teen I heard from my jazz piano teacher that Ross had to leave because of her heroin habit . . .
