It is my understanding that this song actually originated in America and was not sung by our German Russian forefathers in South Russia before they came to the US in the late 1800's. It later found its way to Russia but by way of the kinfolks who lived in Amrica. What know you about this?

@derralf03 Well, the melodies they sing are probably slightly different. Having lived apart for so long, different clusters of Germans from Russia have kept the music tradition alive but the tunes might have changed in the meanwhile.
