I wanted to buy The dvd but Amazon.com is selling it for 89.99 that's a bit high for something that is almost 30 years old....although it is a classic but that's a bit ridiculous
The funniest thing is that he treats his wife abominably with his constant affairs and expects her to just accept it because she 'should be grateful to have him at all'. When Weldon wrote the book (in 83 - this series was made in 86) that sentiment wasn't that unusual in some marriages - the book btw is awesome.
@BritGirlJay You're right! I read the book when it first came out in the 80's because my marriage was breaking up and that was the mood (murderous )I was in.....but; looking back, watching the film which is true to the book, I realize Ruth and Bobbo epitomize the mindset of the 80's "We want it all" with no re percussions attitude
To continue what I said on part 2, this marriage was doomed from the start. Bobbo was trying to be a good guy and marrying Ruth because he felt pity for her. While he thinks he was building her self-confidence he actually created Ruth's dependance for Bobbo. Ruth desperatly tried to be the good housewife in thanks for Bobbo marrying her. However, they made each other miserable. Bobbo was not attractive to Ruth and she so wanted to be loved by him. Lesson: never marry to make someone else happy.
I think the view of the wife here, of having issue with intimacy, is because this man married her as a virgin, and never showed her real, authentic love and tenderness, within intimacy. Thus, her views she shared in the bedroom. That of course, is not her fault. The husband is ghastly.
I disgree I think if you watch US TV most shows and films are based on British TV shows. It is just America is able to make very expensive Tv shows, that the BBC can't do. Heros cost £4 Million per epidoe, the BBC couldn't justify this money for one show. The US makes very good highly expensive shows, but if you look at UK TV and US shows that cost the same, UK drama is better for the money. The only thing the BBC puts money in is boring costume dramas, that brits don't watch, but sell globally
This is Weldon at her peak, Sadly, this is probably British TV at its peak. Nowadays the quality comes from the USA, chiefly from HBO. Complacency has crippled the BBC, like the rest of UK industry.....
