That Frontline would send such an undisciplined, immature, amateurish reporter to cover this important story is extremely disappointing. Even all these years after this story originally aired, I find it far below the usual high standards of PBS and Frontline. In a nutshell the British kid was rude, crude, and ignorant. However, the Korean guide was hospitable, intelligent, and very attractive.
USA should offer North Korea a PEACE TREATY in return for withdrawing their troops from South Korea. That will ease the tension and peace in those region will get a chance.

This was actually the most interesting video about north korea I've seen. I don't know why, but it seemed to me that those to 'guides'(wich I am suprised to even see he had such nice guides, considering that usually, tourists are stuck with very, very, very strict and cold minders) were genuinly appreciating the guy. Not everyone in North Korea goes to a gulag. When I was there this past September, my guides were very friendly, inquisitive, and yet proud of their country. There is definitely a lack of goods, and the electricity did not always work. There is no telling what North Korea could accomplish if they would open their economy to at least China-type standards, and allowed some basic freedoms to their people. The South has done a phenomenal job. We'll have to see what happens under Kim Jong-un.
The sad part, is the girl is probably now rotting in a gulag, for being too friendly -- I think a few of the questions she answered "incorrectly" according to party lines. A shame. I think the "reporter" now has this woman's torture, rape, and possibly murder on his hands.
My heart is breaking watching this video. This lovely girl who's so obviously very intelligent also seems interested in learning more of the outside world and what it may hold, yet she lives in a metal fishbowl where no one can see out and no one can see in. So sad. I hope someday soon she can become a tourist of the world rather than a tour guide of depressing routine.

@Darusdei - The US entered WWII in 12/41 after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Germany declared war on the US on 12/11/1941. Germany wasn't defeated until 05/1945. Hence, the US & Germany were at war for 3.5 years, which is hardly "already falling".
America defeated Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan (along with Russia and England) during WWII. Next, America helped rebuild Europe via the Marshall Plan, thereby spent about $13 billion. (You sound angry, dude. America is not your enemy).

Everybody did their part and indeed the majorty of german casulties was on the eastern front, but in 194-1942 every german division that wasn't deployed on eastern front could have made the difference..
Of all the documentaries i've watched these two guides seem to be the coolest and most open, usually they're really up front and aggressive, you can tell some of these people, even as they go on about how great their country etc is are in actual fact dying inside but of course, one wrong word and they and their families would be sent off to a concentration camp and never be heard of again, it's a terrifying existence to live really, sad stuff.

This doc has showed me that maybe there are some NK citizens who like a simple kind of life free of money and greed. Maybe the answer is to just let the citizens of both countries choose which side they live. The results may not be as one-sided as we'd think.

I was following few videos on north korea and this 3 part series was some what a pleasant one. I mean the two guides in this video was very casual, especially the female guide. Hope nothing happened to them after this. Few nice people like this can change what others think of the thier whole country

North Korea is a nation built on FEAR!!! This beautiful lady ( the guide) is one of the more privileged of this state.....as are those that live in and near Pyongyang. But many live in gulags for slights ( like sitting on a newspaper with the image of Kim Jong Il ) and their children and parents are condemned with them. It is a 1984 Orwellian world. A place where millions have died from starvation. A world where an ideology of fear and personality cult prevail. I hope to see them free.

It defeated Nazi Germany and Imperialist Japan, then rebuilt them (costing American taxpayers billions of dollars), then made Germany and Japan a friend. In addition, no other nation on earth has welcomed more immigrants to it's shores. I do not see anyone breaking into North Korea, Cuba, or Russia. When there's trouble, the world looks to the USA for guidance and solutions. Thank God for the USA.

u.s. fought less than 15% of german military might and managed to top casualties in a record time.
the fact is, nazis would have been defeated with or without the u.s.

@Darusdei - The US entered WWII in 12/41 after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Germany declared war on the US on 12/11/1941. Germany wasn't defeated until 05/1945. Hence, the US & Germany were at war for 3.5 years, which is hardly "already falling".
America defeated Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan (along with Russia and England) during WWII. Next, America helped rebuild Europe via the Marshall Plan, thereby spent about $13 billion. (You sound angry, dude. America is not your enemy).

u.s. fighting against germany was a minor skirmish compared to the eastern front. only thing you really achieved in that war was in the pacific by bombing civilian targets.

just dont underestimated the value of the material aid the US gave to both the russians en the UK.. WWII could have turned out differently without the US, Russia or the UK but that is just poinless speculation.. Everybody did their part and indeed the majorty of german casulties was on the eastern front, but in 194-1942 every german division that wasn't deployed on eastern front could have made the difference..

Of all the documentaries i've watched these two guides seem to be the coolest and most open, usually they're really up front and aggressive, you can tell some of these people, even as they go on about how great their country etc is are in actual fact dying inside but of course, one wrong word and they and their families would be sent off to a concentration camp and never be heard of again, it's a terrifying existence to live really, sad stuff.
