Acctually guys.... he is gay. My friend and i took this video on holiday in Egypt. The guy dancing fancied a guy staying in our hotel and told him so. The guy staying in our hotel told us round the pool the next morning. He's still a great dancer tho.!!!
it was a surprise the first time i went to egypt cos in the UK you always see 'arabic dancing' as just 'women' but when you're actually out there - you see all the men doing it just as well as the women.
I even know that some dance schools in the UK refuse to teach guys because they believe that its a woman thing connected to the Mother Goddess. What we've done with the dance in the West a lot of times is a very far cry from the real thing you see when you go there indeed.
Yes but satisfying as well. Just when you thought you knew everything about the world you realise there's so much more letf to explore and discover. MAkes life so exciting doesn't it?
- he is definitely a lot more camp than other guys i've seen dancing - but yes - men do a lot of the egyptian style belly dancing and are often better than the women!
they are very free with their bodies put it that way - in a way that you wouldn't have otherwise expected.
...Egyptians are known to have a sense of humor especially when they dance. Its okay to not take yourself so seriously. It looks stranger because he's kind og gangly and skinny and not very well coordinated at times, but in social dancing thats okay.
Much of what we expect is dictated by what we've seen in the media.
Exactly. The point that a lot of people in the west don't realise is that in real Egyptian dance, your allowed to have a sense of humor and not take yourself so serious. That's why its such fun.
not all egyptians dance like this, I'm egyptian & i know.. but this guy is unike.. anyway such guys are not well accepted in the egyptian society especially in the high class society because he is refered to as kinda gay..
You are right, not all Egyptian guys dance this way. Only the ones who are still connected to their culture. From Alexandria to Aswan, this is how real Egyptians dance, man, woman and child. Unfortunately the upper class is so brain washed in believing the West is superior to them they are lossing their traditions. They are very European in their mentality and way of life.
I know but I'm with the opinion that such guys r kinda gays because if a man dance like this so what women will do then.. loooooool, this is the attitude generaly spread in arab region & i'm with it, & I like belly dancing by the way but for women only
The reality is that this IS the folk dance of Egypt. These guys are not gay. This is a very western centric point of view. Too many Arabs have been brain washed into thinking certain aspects of their culture are backward and are therefore ashamed of it.
By the way Its a pleasure talking to you and everything I say is with total friendship and respect. I really do underrstand your feelings, what I'm saying is you have to broaden your perspective and be proud, not ashamed or uncomfortable with this aspect of your culture.
The Hawaiians had the same problem with their dance the Hula. When America invaded their country they first outlawed the Hula, then they allowed it back to entertain the tourists and military men stationed there.
Hula was started by the men then later women were allowed to participate, but now since the tourists were men, only women were allowed to do it, (sound familiar). Most Hawaiians were very ashamed of it of it and considered the guys who kept the tradition GAY.
In the 1960s Hawaiians began taking pride in their culture again and fighting for their rights. They began to seek out the old teachers of Hula and to learn their original language that most of them had lost. They started performing the Hula again, but not for tourists. At first the guys who did it were called gay but as they learned more about their history and culture this changed. Now there are just as many men as women doing it
So my friend, realise that Tahiya and Samia were great, but that was a version of the dance created to make it sexy for a male turist audience. That is not all there is to your dance. It is a happy dance done in celebration by everyone and if people don't understand, you must be the one to stand up and say this is our culture and we are proud. You do indeed have a lot to be proud of and I'm not talking about the Pyramids
looks more like gay style
