  • Hi! I may have asked this before-If I did,I forgot the answer-sorry. I drag/drop a midi drum pattern into a midi track. I highlight and copy it many times over just as you do here to get a basic song. In piano roll view,I open 1 of the measures to add a fill. But-the fill goes on EVERY measure of the song! Its so angering. Any ideas? Thanks again

  • @loungefly1

Not sure why that happens - must be a setting somewhere. . .

Here is a way to work around it. Make them into one clip !

Highlight all the clips, the entire track - and right click to "bounce to clips".

Now surely you can add fills etc

    good luck

  • first scuse me for my english (I speak french:P) when i will record my guitar and the voice ,this program cut with no one reason and i don't know what it does that .

What i do for adjust this cut not voluntary :P?

  • @mrcacamou12

This is called a "dropout". It can be caused by many things.

First, be sure you are using the right driver mode. See "Sonar First Time Set Up" for more about driver modes.

Also be sure you have the most recent updated drivers for your sound card or audio interface.

If you have a good computer with lots of RAM, Sonar should work well.

    Good luck

  • @dustypuppy im learning so much from this videos so fast considering this is my first experience with editing and midi! thank you so much!!!

  • @Alexander1208

Cool - thanks for your comment :)

  • When you get a chance can you either tell me exactly where to go to find the exact info or tell me how to setup my SY 77 Yamaha sequencer as a SLAVE to Sonar ( I have Home Studio 6 ). I want to record 1 track from the keyboard. Then the 2nd track to sync with the 1st and so forth. I don't know the settings and tech support told me they can't help because they don't know about that keyboard. When I hit start on Sonar I want the keyboard to start. Thank you so much..

  • @stardom991

I suggest you check on the cakewalk forum for that. Its free to use and there are some very smart people on there. Its been years since I used a setup like that. It must be very simple these days? You would set Sonar to be the master (see Sonar Options / Timecode ) Then set your keyboard to be the slave (refer to the SY77 manual for that)

    good luck

  • @dustypuppy Do you know how I can save my record and audiotrack at the same file? I record with my mic and I import my audio track, but when I save the whole thing I end up with two separated files! I would like them to be in one file so that I can use my whole song for Itunes or anything like that. Do you know how I can fix this?

  • @Tessaaa13

Yes - when you are done a project it might have many tracks. Then its time to do a mix-down which is very easy in Sonar.

Simply "select all" (Ctrl + A) then go to File / Export / Audio.

    Good luck

  • @dustypuppy Ah thank you very much, It worked! :-)

  • dustypuppy,

Just want to extend a massive thank you! for sharing your knowledge of Sonar with us who need this assistance. We recently got Sonar 8 Producer edition, and it seems most of what you're sharing is applicable. You are good at giving tutorials...you make it understandable as well as fun.

    Again, thank you...

  • I have Sonar Home Studio 7 XL on XP. And all of your Youtube Sonar tutorials helped me out A LOT!!! Thank you!

  • WOW. very informative and professional

  • Just got Sonar 8 Producer, this will help anyway thanks for taking the time.

  • Thanks. Your Cool Guy

  • any computer can run this sonar 6??

    I have a windows vista...

    4 gb ram....

  • @GPMETALBR

Sonar 6 was one of the first where they said it was vista compatable. Sonar is now up to version 8.5 and they claim to be good for vista, windows7, 32 and 64 bit.

However the problem people are experiencing is the lack of updated drivers for sound cards and audio interfaces.

It should work for you depending on your system.

    good luck

  • how do i avoid clipping and pops and clicks?

  • @ParadisioFilms

Clipping happens when your signal is too loud and the software clips it so it doesn't go "into the red" But that causes a very annoying CLICK. Be sure your recording level is low enough to avoid this.

General pops and clicks are different. This usually happens if you don't have all the settings right or your computer isn't optimized . My first suggestion is driver modes. See my video "Sonar First Time Setup" for more about driver modes.

What OS are you using ? and which Sonar ?

  • @dustypuppy i'm using windows vista and Sonar 6 LE

  • @ParadisioFilms

Vista and windows 7 are causing some problems in general because of special drivers needing to be written. Be sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card and also all updates for your computer. You might need a more professional sound card or audio interface.

  • @dustypuppy How do i take out clipping?

  • @ParadisioFilms

If you are getting clipping you simply need to lower the volume of what you are recording. Set it low enough so it only touches the red sometimes but not so loud it clips.

    Good luck

  • @dustypuppy Thank you, and how do i make my laptop volume higher? Because if i set it to 100% it sounds like 20%

  • @ParadisioFilms You will need to go to your volume properties and adjust the volume in there - you will likely find something is not turned up fully. Right click speaker icon and select "Open Volume Controls" (thats the way with XP - don't know about Windows 7 and Vista)

    good luck

  • very helpful thank you very much...

  • Please help, what did i do wrong, after I install my sonar 6 and I play a midi song, but there is no sounds.

  • you might have to set a different driver mode in the program - for this, see my video "Sonar First Time Setup"

Or maybe you just need to map the sounds to a soft-synth . . . see "Sonar Soft Synths Basic Setup"

  • YES, I follow the Sonar first time setup, and it works now, Thanks thanks.

  • @dustypuppy how do i get v vocal i keap trying i dont nkow how to anable it can you help me

  • @TheLilscrip

You can right click on an audio piece (in the main view if sonar) and V-Vocal should be in the flyout which appears.

What version of Sonar is this? Perhaps a "light" version which doesn't include it?

  • Hi! I have a question. How would you select only a portion of a wav sound file and apply effects just to the selected part? I have a 10-second intro I'm working on and I want to apply some reverb just to the last 5 seconds of the wav. I don't see any way to select just part of the file. When I click it, it just selects the whole thing...

  • Hi - no problem

Here are 2 ways to do that.

    Method 1

Select a piece of the audio by selecting the track or tracks you want. Then drag along the time line (see more in my video called "Sliding Parts in Cakewalk Sonar ") to select only the piece you want. Then go to Process / Audio and apply your FX

    Method 2

    Use automation.

See my video called "Using Automation in Cakewalk Sonar"

    I hope this helps

    Good luck

    Dwight

  • Both those methods worked great for me. Thanks a million! Keep up the good work with your tutorials. Have a good day and take care!

  • Question. I'm trying to make some midi tunes for a game I'm working on, and have a few beats sorted out. However try as I might (with out owning a music keybored that is able to be hooked up or anything) timing it is hard. Would I be able to say hum it out myself and have it record as like a piano or strings or such under midi?

  • You will find some software like that by searching

    Voice to Midi . . . or . . .

    Wav to Midi

    Good luck

  • I am so grateful about your generosity, I learnd and enjoy your teaching. Thanks so much

  • you are welcome :)

    Thanks for your comment

  • This is great. I had little idea about the midi/drum power of this software I've owned for two years. Thanks, Sonar should be paying you or at least giving you free upgrades. : )

  • Thanks :)

    glad these videos help

  • Great stuff...again.

  • Thanks very much :)

  • I love you tutorials. They are so helpful. any chance you could do one on Audio Snap sometime ? The one put out by Cakewalk is not well explained.

    Many thanks

  • Thanks - And an Audio Snap video is a good idea :)

I'll see what I can do

  • Hi there,

Thanks for doing these videos, I've been using Sonar6 for quite a while and I'm amazed, and somewhat ashamed, at the amount of really obvious stuff that I have just completely missed!

    Cheers.

  • Thats great - thanks for saying so :)

    Cheers

  • is it just me or does the voice over sound like someone of sesame street

  • Hey, Dwight, thanks again for helping me fix my recording issue, but as you know as soon as one thing is fixed another problem arises. If you don't mind, could I pick your brain on latency fixes? MIDI and drums are spot on both recording and playback. But the guitar, vocals, etc. (any audio redcording) seems to record properly but gets way off in playback around measure 15 or so and progressively gets worse. Any suggestions? FYI- I'm just using a basic soundblaster sound card.

  • wow - what driver mode are you using ? Have you tried all 3 ?

See this in the video "Sonar First Time Set Up"

  • yup - asio doesn't let me record at all but playback is the same result with both of the other options. Strange, huh?

  • Dusty - Great stuff you've got posted thanks for all your videos. At the end of this video, you have all the components playing and are about to add a guitar track but EVERYTHING that goes through the output get's recorded in the audio track. How do you set the recording option to PLAY the other MIDI and drum tracks while only RECORDING the guitar? I had it once on accident and can't get it back. PS- Not sure if it matters, but I'm still using Sonar4. Thanks

  • Hi

I used Sonar4 until just recently - its a great program.

I use a small mixing board. I use the AUX send to feed from the board into the computer. So I plug my guitar in a strip and turn up the send for that strip. This records only the guitar.

If you are not using a mixing board, you'll simply need to make sure your recording properties are set to "MIC IN" or "LINE IN" (wherever you are plugged into)

DO NOT select "entire mix" or "What I Hear"

    Hope this helps

    Dwight

  • Awesome... all better now! Thanks again for your help - I totally overlooked the computer settings and figured I could do it all within Sonar. Keep up the good work.

  • Hey Bro, dude you are a genius with this. How do you do the pan? I was trying to figure out how to make things pan such as vocals. Lets say if I'm recording, I would like to have one of my vocals to play on the right speaker then another one to play on the left speaker. I knew how to do it on the old Pro Audio 9 but this one I'm not sure.

  • Thanks :)

Widen an audio track so you can see the parameters. See the three sliders? one is for VOLUME another for TRIM but one is PAN. It should say so with a tool tip when you hover over these controls.

    good luck :)

  • I have 2 MD8's from Yamaha I'd like to use one in ACT from Sonar. I have a SK76 keyboard I can use for it but like the sliders on the MD8and set up of a regular mixer to use in ACT. Can't seem to get the Yamaha to "log on" so to speak. Any ideas? i'd like to keep the keyboard for keyboarding. In case you are not familair, The MD 8 is an 8 track digital recording board that operates using MD Disks. I have 2. One has a bad transport but the mixer is VERY CLEAN.

  • That sounds like a good setup. I admit I am not familliar enough to know what to suggest. I have not used ACT at all yet (shame)

Many people read these comments - can someone else help on this one?

  • Hey Dude, Nice job on the tutorials. I'm am down here in San Diego and used to be from Cleveland, the Home of Rock and Roll, had a studio there called North Coast. You remind me of many a gig I did in Canada. I didn't read your bio but you have to be from the Great White North by the sound of your voice. I must say, you have a very polished delivery in your tracks and really easy to follow. I, being an engineer have spent HOURS editing "ums.& ahh. ahh" Nice instruction, preperation/delivery.

  • Thanks very much :)

  • Superb tutorials

Really appreciate the time some people spend to help others.

    5 star videos as well.

    Regards Paul

  • Thanks :)

thats kind of you to say so

  • You have answered my 2 year question.....thank you!!!

  • Thank you so much for answering so quickly!

The "extra window" I think I am seeing in your video is at the bottom of the screen. I see some buttons on it etc. Maybe I don't even need it at this point, but I am curious!

By the way, I set up my sonar audio and midi tracks just like you showed me. I am so excited and I can't wait to start recording.

By the way, I viewed your brother's beautiful video " I love Jesus", it was wonderful.

    God bless you both:)

  • Hi, I wish I had found your videos 9 months ago when I first started TRYING to use Sonar 6! I actually gave up for a while. I have a new computer now and things are getting there finally! Could you please tell me where the metronome setting is? Also, I don't have that extra window showing at the bottom. Thank you for everything.

  • Metronome - in Sonar, go to Views / Toolbars... A window opens - click the box beside Metronome - click it on and off - in the background you can see where it goes :)

Extra Window - I think you mean while in the PianoRoll view?

Press C to make the Controller pane appear and disappear.

    Hope this helps :)

    Have Fun

  • Tanks DustyPuppy

  • great tutorials dustypup!

  • thank you :)

  • WOAH. that computer voice you used for this video's narration is cool. how did you do that? it almost sounds real.

p.s. is recording from a digitech metal master distortion medal, our of the "clean" mixer output, using line-in on the back of the sound card a good idea? I've been doing that and it sounds amazing. I would think it would be bad, but what do you think? do I have to go pre sonus interface firewire?

  • lol thanks :)

Seems like recording that way should be fine. And it sounds amazing ?

    proper :)

  • Hi there!! I was wondering if the tones of the Organ/Bass/voice could be altered with Tuning changes for alternate tunings, or adding FX to the Bass lines or Voice recordings. Would i have to use a piano to use for these parts? Or would i be able to use my guitar to record those parts?

  • MIDI is very different than AUDIO although using Sonar we now have good control over each.

Midi can be drawn in or played from a midi controller or keyboard. These midi sounds cannot be played from a guitar (unless the guitar has MIDI ability) But you can record bass, guitar or voice, then edit and add FX to that.

This program amazes me - there's not much it won't do.

  • I have been using Sonar for a long time and I had no idea it had a guitar tuner. I've learned alot from you thanks.

  • I am new to recording and just bought a copy of Sonar 6XL. Your videos are excellent and much better then those provided by Cakewalk! Keep up the great work!

  • Great. Nice clear instructions. Thanks

  • and also lol.. i want to be able to do loads of midi piano rolls but it allways keeps the same one for every track an you help please lol thanks

  • you can have as many midi tracks as you want - each one can be viewed from "piano roll" view. These will all be different even if they look the same :)

    Hope this helps.

  • hi on the piano roll i want to be able to play my keyboard and you can record from that but i can only record by click the piano roll on the programme do you think you could help please thank you ..

  • Be sure your track is armed (Click the R so it turns red) Then while in piano roll view you will be able to record from your keyboard :)

  • it dont let me record from my keyboard i have to click to piano roll key to record :/

  • I think you need to open sonar - go to options / midi devices - select your midi input there - then all should work :)

    hope this helps

    dusty

If this doesn't work, tell me - how is your keyboard plugged in - what kind of interface do you use etc.

  • kk ill try it but do you get what i mean thoe by i want to be able tap one of the keys on the keyboard and it come up on the piano roll thanks for all your help on sonar 6 thoe i think its great lol

  • yes yes :)

This should work - for real time recording or step time recording. You will press the keys and immediately see the notes appear in piano roll view :) Good Luck

  • how do i get that to work thoe??

  • and... sorry bout all of this... erm it wont let me have like drum, bass, guitar and all of that on my midi tracks can you help .. thanks

  • It looks like your program is not yet set up properly. I will email you and we'll get this figured out :)

  • kk cheers i am online now

  • Dwight,

Thanks soo much for teaching, this is a great resource for me.

  • how do you connect ur mic and guitar, etc to the computer?

  • You would simply use an eighth inch mini jack and plug into your LINE IN or MIC IN of your sound card. Mine is different because I route things thru a small mixer (6 channel Peavey) then to my M-Audio Firewire interface - which takes the place of a sound card.

  • Dewight,

I'm new to computer recording and not sure what will give better quality Firewire interface or a good PCI sound card?? I want no latency at all, its very hard to sing with latency. I'm using sonar 7 producer edition, also do I need drivers for MIDI keyboard controllers if I'm using a MIDI cable??

    thanks in advance.

    Noveen

  • Zero latency hardware monitoring and near zero latency software monitoring is important. You can achieve this using firewire or USB devices - or also available in a PCI card. Whatever you get will come with a disk and you'll have the drivers you'll need to run with Sonar.

  • thanks so much for such a quick response. Also do I need to install drivers for MIDI keyboards controllers I have M-audio Keystation 49e and they do not have drivers for 64bit xp right now. Do I need a driver if I use midi cable to connect ?

  • I think that will depend on what interface you go for. The drivers (disk) should be included. (if not, you should be able to download them) Be sure to get a sound card or interface that does Audio and MIDI with near zero latency. Once its all working, you can go into Sonar and set the keystation for output. Sonar will then map the right sounds for you.

    I hope this helps

  • thank you soo much. Yes this is very helpfull. I'm getting more and more exiting and cant wait to start making music.

    you are great man.

  • Excellent video(s) dustypuppy! I'm not new to computer recording but am new to Sonar so these vids have been a great help. I really like the idea of taking an already written song and working out the parts using midi (from your Fun with Midi series). It's such a great way to learn to use Sonar's midi capabilities. Nice one, got yerself a new subscriber!

  • Thanks very much :)

  • Sweet Vids, keep it up please )

  • dude you smart

    me not smart ;]

  • Hi Dwight,

    Thanks a lot

  • Thank you!!!! Very nice!!!

    MArquinhos - Brasil!!!!

  • Thanks :)

  • Thanks for zooming in this was very helpful your way better than that gearwire guy. Please keep posting.

  • Thanks very much :)

    I'm glad it helps.

  • Very helpful and interesting as always dusty! Your tutorials are far more in depth than the others provided on youtube, allowing beginners and more advanced users to pick up on the key MIDI recording and audio editing aspects of sonar in a easy to follow way. Keep it up ! :)

  • thank you

    that is very encouraging :)

  • great video, What's the name of the program?

  • Thank you - this is SONAR 6 from Cakewalk. It is a complete midi and audio recording and editing program.

  • Love this video the most!

  • Thank you

  • I'm so glad I found your channel. Great help.

    Thank you. Rafael

  • great :) thanks for your comment

  • Thank you for doing the video's.They are a huge help. God Bless
