Holy shit! Why are there so many cry babies on here? PTM only has two amazing albums and that is Waiter...and Censored Colors. (Church Mouth and Satanic Satanist have some of my favorite songs but overall they're just okay). Not everything PTM puts out is fucking golden some of their music is just boring. It's wild how some of you just can't accept that. Yeah, the intention for most of their albums is to be repetitive but sometimes it just doesn't work and its not interesting. Stop being pussies
Guys he likes the band, just not the album especially, lol. He really did enjoy some of the songs on the album, it's just that some he didn't like as much, which sort of evened it out.
This guy, hah this guy. Shouldve started your portugal experience with waiter. then church mouth. I mean why the hell is church mouth not even talked about in this "critique"? anyways censored is great. less production work then american ghetto especially. dur
This guy likes to hear himself talk. Bad critique. If you notice sir, this band has a certain theme in each album. All of their albums sound different from each other, but within the album the songs sound very similar. They did this on purpose. As a whole, the album flows together very nicely.
Yo bro, just shut the fuck up. You have no idea what you're talking about. I have been listening to Portugal. The Man for sometime now and none of the songs on this album sound like any other from different albums. You're a pathetic douchebag and you judge music too much. Every album they have put out has been amazing except for American Ghetto which is still not too bad. Satanic Satanist was amazing btw. You have to listen to this album more than 3 times to appreciate it. I fucking love PTM
@Sampit16 lol. made me laugh. get your head outta your ass. its his opinion. you didnt even say anything about what they were going for and instead remarked on his taste
I thought this album was beautiful. I'm super picky about albums that have tracks that all sound the same and in my opinion, this is definitely not one of those albums. There's big tempo changes and vibe changes throughout the whole thing. I don't see what you were talking about there........ :/
This guy has zero credibility. Fucking wannabe music critique. He randomly went through a dictionary finding obscure words to describe their album. Dip shit, I wish I could throw one of John Gourleys shits right at that stupid fucking look on your face. Bada-bing, I'm out
Satanic satanist is simple and such.. but its suuch a good album, gotta love it. this is probably my favorite by them, good balance of everything. ....review Getting paid by zechs marquise!
@eatinglightning19 I didn't exactly care about his opinion, but no one cares about your opinion of his opinion either. And the people who care what his opinions are are his subs and viewers
I think the similar sounds within P.TM's records are somewhat intentional. Everything they do seems to run in duos. Waiter, You Vultures was very electronic in nature, then It's Complicated Being a Wizard goes nearly entirely electronic. Moving on, Censored Colors was similar to Church Mouth, both adopting a southern vibe. American Ghetto was similar to The Satanic Satanist with their groovy, psychodelic-esque nature. If the trend continues, their next will be some alternate take on this one.
I haven't heard this album yet but for me the best portugal the man so far is "IT'S COMPLICATED BEING A WIZARD" ep and I'm shocked that after browsing 7 pages that it hasn't been mentioned.....
i somewhat disagree with this one. this is just one of my favorite bands though. i just really like what this band is doing. i haven't been too disappointed with anything they put out except american ghetto. that's like the only album that i can't recite word for word.
I agree with you about a lot of things, as a fan since their first album I have been let down by the past three records even though I love them. They were much more experimental censored colors and back.
Wow you clearly have no idea what they were going for. They use the same motif's lyrically and instrumentally and tie them in with previous tracks, much like modest mouse. The repetition was intentional. For you to say that's a bad thing is kinda ridiculous fyi
i definitly know what you mean by the "repetitive song/melody sounds" part. their singer/guitarist John Gourley actually writes all the songs and just brings it to the other guys to fill in the parts and add their instruments. basically he builds the house and theyre the interior decorators. but i really hope they change up that formula for the next release because after a certain amount of songs you write, houses you build, or whatever its gonna start to sound/look/feel/become the same thing
Could you maybe say something about Amy Winehouse in your next video? I know she may not be your thing, but...I was fucking sobbing when I heard that she died. Gave me that sick, heart-sinking feeling. RIP Amy <3, gonna be listening to the "Back to Black" album forever.
Waiter: "You Vultures!" and Church Mouth are my favorite Portugal, The Man albums. If you started on Censored Colors than you've missed out and should check them out.
you should definitely give Waiter: You Vultures! and Church Mouth a listen. that will always be the sound that i associate with P.TM. Church Mouth is prolly their best album imo, but Censored Colors was amazing as well. Satanic Satanist was just a bit too poppy for them, they completely lost that rawness that they began with on Waiter and Church Mouth, its almost like the forgot their roots, and tried to go for a new sound. American Ghetto was just...lame.
@ifuckinghatepikeys I disagree about Censored Colors and Satanic Satanist. I think CC was way more "poppy" then SS. SS had the raw sound similar to Church Mouth but CC had good songs but a horrible cheesy sound. I never really gave CC enough time because I thought I heard everything i could from it from a few listens, maybe I was wrong. I feel kinda bad that I don't even know what American Ghetto is.
I'm a huge PTM fan, but I would have to agree with you about this album. I was disappointed at first, and it really took me a few times of listening to really enjoy any of the songs at all. Recycled lyrics in a few songs, as well as the same feel throughout the whole album. I really liked them before because they changed it up throughout their older albums, but the last two just aren't really doing it for me. Still love the album, but it may collect some dust while I keep listening to Colors.
The main repetition comes from You Carried Us (Share With Me The Sun) and Share With Me The Sun, Im sure you can figure out why just by looking at the titles of the songs. Share With Me The Sun is pretty much just a reprise. Every review I've seen has said that the album has repetition but really its mostly just those two songs, not the entire album.
heydood, i think you are bullseye, on about everything. I only have 1 bone to pick because I'm a visual artist and I hear people's opinions on my work all the time. Sometimes a review doesn't take into account the true feelings and efforts put in by an artist. Seven albums in 6 years is incredibly productive. Adding to your review, as artists, I think they've done their best for what they are capable of doing right now. I think theyve got potential & room to grow and i'm excited to see more.
@bdempster44 basically-i create shitty art all the time. I do my best and I don't feel like they are slacking-but I agree, i think they could do better. It all takes time, and without mentioning it, I feel like the review ends up biased. This is however, YOUTUBE. Speak your mind bro.
Thanks for reviewing this, they're one of my favorite bands. Have you listened to Waiter or Church Mouth? Both have their own styles that are totally different from Satanic Satanist and American Ghetto.
Although you're right about the repitition and sameness in the choruses, I think all that actually helps the album build up to its sweet spot...I don't mind it when bands use the same arrangements in their music, just as long as they can make it sound the best it can be. I'd give the album an 8, some pretty good tracks.
Please track review M83's new single, I know this isn't the first request you've gotten ;-)
I wanna know what people think of spoken word, like saul williams. I came across his music yesterday, and its changed my direction in music. Anyone know any good artists?
Tyler the Creator and OddFuture are overhyped garbage for white hipsters who think its the best shit since Wu-Tang and Gravediggaz. These are the last people I'd have a conversation with when it comes to hip-hop because they really do not know much of anything about the whole of the genre. For all we know they were jacking off to Pavement and Radiohead back in the mid-90s when hip-hop was getting big. The majority of them only hopped on like 5-10 years ago. "Brah, the new MF Doom is sickk!"
@LaLaGrunge why you gotta hate on kids living their dreams, regardless of their music? i mean making ignorant statements about their music and fanbase is stupid, but hating for no reason is pointless. if you don't like their music, move on, no point on making ridiculous assumptions about their lives. have a nice day :)
@LaLaGrunge why are you hating on Tyler and OddFuture? your comment made NO SENSE. you said they probably hopped onto hip-hop 5-10 years ago? the oldest dude in OddFuture is not even 25? so of course some of them probably started listening to hip-hop 10 years ago. but Tyler has been listening since he was like 7 shut up and get some knowledge before you make assumptions. because right now your just ignorant. bye.
Please review 'Givers - In Light'. They're from my hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana. We've never had any of our alternative bands get as much attention as they've been getting and we're all really proud of them. I'd love to hear what you think about the album!
sum1 on the comments of a review of yours somewhere suggested u review or at least listen to The Orb's 'Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld' if u haven't heard it. I was then listening to Earth's 'Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light', on ur recommendation (having never heard Earth before) and I noticed that the title track is extremely similar to 'Spanish Castles in Space' on the aforementioned Orb album . check it out! seems The Orb were doing something very Earth-y some 20 years before them!
I bought censored colors because I heard so much good about them, but I did not enjoy it much.
