Hey, i finally got all my substrate etc for my tank we were discussing before. Is it ok to layout the substrate etc before you get ready to plant it? Or is that not good for the Amazonia ada substrate to sit? Just curious
@usermodes heh, nah i just want to lay the soil soon, so i can start figuring out my layout before i get the plants in there. I don't wanna do it all at once with the plants and soil. I guess ill play it by ear. Gotta pick up all the extra co2 stuff tomorrow other than the tank.
and ADA sent me some shitty driftwood, so i gotta find some better pieces to complete layout
great looking tank. Im getting back into the plant scene and things have changed so much since i last did it. Any suggestions on the type of lighting i should get for a 30 gallon wide? ill be running co2 as well. Just trying to figure out what lighting i should go with without going an overly expensive route
heh.. nothing much changes i guess. but equipment wise.. yes. creativity is individual still. 30gal, well... if you want to follow the WPG (WattPerGallon) rules then you can easily Google the calculator. But to me personally, i do not follow WPG rules.. hehe.. i follow the plant rules.
know your future tank size > plan the scape > decides on plant type > check the plants requirements > BUDGETTING YOUR PURSE (else return to step 1 or 2) > then only start go into hardware mode.
@usermodes alright, well any light brands you recommend over others? Those are the things that have changed the most that ive noticed. As well as the light fixtures?
i seriously do not dare to recommend over brands and fixtures. different people have different view and opinions of these 2 and lighting for each tank is very dynamic. for me myself, i prefer to use PLL over T5 but Metal Halide is the best (but comes with a superbly high price tag). brand wise, ADA of course if you got cash. hehe... other than that, brand doesnt really concerned much to me... as long it gets the job done. walla..!! :D why worry so much? hehehe..
@usermodes yea ADA is expensive.. i may be getting some of their driftwood/rocks though. I prefer those over most that i see in stores or on other sites. Unless you know of a cheaper place for the same style of rocks.
What substrate you use in that tank? my tank will be similar in style with foreground and medium sized plants in back
the only ADA stuff i use, is their soils and base fert (the 5 elements and powersand) also their thermometer (because it looks nicer... LOL). other than that... i opt for others.
rock and stones, are you in Malaysia? because in here... most LFS carry around the same stones, even more wider varieties in types. most Malaysian aquascaper dont really buy 'original' ADA stones or woods. but looks alike (or seiryu stones).
this tank is using ADA Amazonia II soil as substrate.
@usermodes im in america, so unfortunately i can't get any of the cheap stuff around malaysia, otherwise i would. Most of the places around here don't carry quality drift wood/rocks. Seems like the soil stuff from ADA is very expensive. 28 dollars american for 9 L or whatever it is is not very much. That is only like 2 gallons in america and that is not much at all. How much of that would i need for a 30 gallon?
28USD for ADA 9L? in here is around RM120.. slightly expensive in MY but the range isn't far... heh, but i am going for ADA soils because no other soils as rich nutrients as theirs. even without base fert your plants would still doing well.
my setup of 60gal tank (standard 3ft) usually will need 2 x 9L medium grain and 1 x 9L finer grain and i will still have extras for fine tuning and topping up.
while you need 30gal of soils? wow.. how big is your tank anyway?
@usermodes no my setup is 30 gallons. Half the size of your 60 gallon tank.. I was looking at the Amazonia. You think i could get away with 1 bag of the 9L Amazonia?
and 1 x 9L of the finer grain? Let me know what you think would work for my 30 gallon tank
ah.. hehe. sorry. my bad .... u already mentioned in ur earlier comments. yes.. for 30gal, that would be sufficient already to me for this kind of scape. you might even have extra (if you put some lava rocks under the soils for slopes, you could have save more).
to save more (converted to USD in Malaysia marketprice) you can go with:
... heh, yes. normal and powder. 5 elements weren't expensive. just buy few spoons for each and less than USD1 per spoon usually. ask the LFS that carry those, they usually knows how much needed for each elements for every tank sizes.
@usermodes is that what the products are called? 5 elements specifically? Or are you just referring to 5 different plant elements to add for a planted tank
it is 5 different kind of elements from ADA. i am not really sure what it is... i am no scientist or really get into super-details kind of person. hahahaha!!! but what i know it could help in growth of bacteria colony in the substrate and also somekind of 'power-boost' for plants roots to go deeper to reach it. no matter what, it's a very good stuff.
nice tank and btw..will the plany u use survive in an all sand tank or do i need soil???( just wondering cause i never tried using real plants and im planning on gett some java moss.) also plz check out my videos!! =D
thanks bro... if you;re talking about the foreground plants (Utricularia Graminifolia), yes as IME.. it will grow. as long ur sand/gravel is fine enough for its roots to hold. if you;re using sands, i think shouldnt have any problem.
it wont promise you a lushy and healthy fast-forming carpets with sand tho anyway but for that Utricularia Graminifolia, it wont die easily (even when you dont want them anymore, they'll refuse to leave...LOL!)
most hairgrass type (eleochorasis) is quite undemanding as well. but depending on the hairgrass type, i would recommend you to get Japanese Hairgrass. They propogate faster and easier and would benefits some root tab fertilizer in your sand (assuming you dont have base fertilizer since you're using sand). ask your LFS if they have some root tabs for you to use. oh, and lighting would plays some big part too for almost ANY carpeting plants. u might want to consider that as well.
choose your carpeting plants according to your lighting and co2 spec and meet their requirement, and HAVE PATIENCE! it wont carpeting your tank in just a week. :P
@usermodes which plants should i prefer .. lemme knw d name .. i jus knw java moss bt dey r dark green i want some ligh green plant which can form a carpet
most carpetting plants requires high lights. glosso and HC are the famous one in the hobby. there's a lot more. utricularia graminifolia is special carpeting plant and utricularia family is a weed-alike growth once you get it settled!!!
LOL... no. fishes do not exhales enough co2 for your plants to consume. if u do not have co2. u have a very limited choice of plants. mosses, anubias and ferns mostly would do okay without co2.
Hey there its me again haha ! I'`ve just broken down my tank and redo-ing it again haha ! Just wondering what kinda filter ya using ? My tank's 2 feet as well

Wow what a wonderful looking tank! This is one of the BEST looking tanks I have ever seen and I have had and seen many!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT JOB! :-)
thanks.. :) yes. ADA substrates. Amazonia 2 Medium Grain to be exact as the base and fine grain on the top layers for better gripping of the UG roots.
Ok, I've seen many of these green carpet videos, and I'm wondering if anyone could help me with their name? I'm going to start an aquascaping tank and I want a carpet like that.
There's a lot of foreground plant to be chosen as an aquascaper. HC and glosso are the famous one. the one im using in this tank is Utricularia Graminifolia.
:) i bought the UG not in submersed form. but they'll transit well when it gets underwater. just be patience and do not lose hope. submersed form is kinda expensive in my place and kinda hard to find.
LOL... never been to scotland before... and im sure scottish highlands looks way more beautiful than my tank. wish i could have a tank with that view.... :P
just use a scraper to clean the glass... that's all. the rest, leave it to my cleaning crew ... a bunch of RCS, otto, SAE and yamato shrimp :) hope this answers.
it;s called Utricularia Graminofolia for the front side and some riccia for the higher grounds. once they adapted to the tank waters and condition and get rooted (for UG), they'll grow superbly fast. if i missed out a week maintenance, the UG will be too thick. need to keep them low so the bottom part wont die and makes the whole carpet floated.
2 - a border using a small stones. but there's still some crossing over the border of course. just keep em minimum during weekly maintenance but still leave some to make it looks natural.
the price differ i guess from different seller from different country. that is not a moss as my foreground. the substrate is ADA Amazonia which cost roughly around USD30+-
I don't understand. Every single tank I see online that is completely planted like this but, the fish are always TINY. I can understand if it's because of the amount of feces that bigger fish produce(like my tiger oscar) but, I believe the bigger fish, esspecially Tiger/Albino Oscars are more important then a tank with beautiful landscape with TINY fish.
@ProTuner06 I don't understand how you can say something is more important just because its bigger. Do you believe oak trees are more important that algae? Trees are bigger but tiny algae is way more IMPORTANT to the ecosystem. TINY things can be important too. Cool, you have a tiger oscar, awesome, just because its bigger doesn't mean its better. I'm not saying smaller is better, I'm just saying judging based on size alone is ridiculous.I bet your tank isn't half as good as this one.
@ProTuner06 DK0793 has a good point, as well, but generally people who create aquascapes at this level realize that smaller fish make the scape appear much larger and impressive. The focus here isn't on the fish - the focus is on the beautiful design and architecture of the aquascape itself. Also, specifically at your point of adding an Oscar to these tanks - Oscars love to pick things up and move them around if they're in the way. Something one definitely does not want in this case.
depends on the aquascaper taste and creativity to have big or smaller fishes. but smaller fishes can make the tank looks bigger in designing perspective plus, can have more fishes in a small tank compare to bigger fishes.
I can tell by your response that you know nothing about keeping a planted tank, or why people like myself and so many of the other people here do this, so you should probably check out a forum or two on planted tanks before making silly comments.
I haven't done any aquascaping YET, but I'm pretty sure there's natural bacterial supplements/fertilizers, and Co2 diffusers along with the giant lights let/force the plants to grow in a better then suitable environment.
yes. beneficial bacteria is crucial in planted tank to keep the ecosystem balance to control the quality of the water. the BB colony need to be matured inside the filter. co2 and lights is a must for medium to hightech tank and fertilizers are optional but highly recommended (for me, Potassium is a must in all my tanks).
What kind of moss is that? I'm thinking of setting up a tank for a cray fish and want to make it a planted tank. Give them something to munch on if they're hungry. While still having open sand and hiding places. I've got a 10 gallon atm.
i personally do not recommend a planted plants inside a tank with 'vegetarian' fish. LOL!!!.. you might take few weeks to grow em, and they'll finish or kill em off in a night or two.. :P
i hope u dont spread a wrong information. i know the o2 wall u are talking about but the one in my tank IS NOT. there's no external o2 in my tank (did u see any airhose in the video above?)
So Beautiful, gives such a big look impression! the rocks look a lot like my petrified wood!

bt if u dont clean d poop ... u neva encounter a problem of fungus in ur tank ??
stratosid702 1 month ago
@stratosid702
heh... good question and i hope this would clear up anyone else's mind as well.
- a planted tank, consider the poops as a 'natural fertilizer'.
- poops and excess food contains ammonia.
- beneficial bacteria that already colonized in a matured filter media will break these ammonia into nitrite and to nitrate after that.
- nitrate is one of the basic plants food in the water column and plants will consume it.
- end result: no ammonia spikes + fishes will poops happily
heh, savvy?

LaxBboys 4 months ago
@LaxBboys
:) i bought the UG not in submersed form. but they'll transit well when it gets underwater. just be patience and do not lose hope. submersed form is kinda expensive in my place and kinda hard to find.

Hi, I was just wondering, what kind of carpet plant is that? How fast does it grow? Thanks
EibachGTR 5 months ago
@EibachGTR
it;s called Utricularia Graminofolia for the front side and some riccia for the higher grounds. once they adapted to the tank waters and condition and get rooted (for UG), they'll grow superbly fast. if i missed out a week maintenance, the UG will be too thick. need to keep them low so the bottom part wont die and makes the whole carpet floated.
usermodes 4 months ago
1. How did you make that higher level of plants in the background
2. How do you keep the gravel from mixing with the sand
takadi 5 months ago 2
@takadi
hi... :)
1 - a slope .
2 - a border using a small stones. but there's still some crossing over the border of course. just keep em minimum during weekly maintenance but still leave some to make it looks natural.

aaronschool296 5 months ago
@aaronschool296
the price differ i guess from different seller from different country. that is not a moss as my foreground. the substrate is ADA Amazonia which cost roughly around USD30+-

robromeo5150 5 months ago
I don't understand. Every single tank I see online that is completely planted like this but, the fish are always TINY. I can understand if it's because of the amount of feces that bigger fish produce(like my tiger oscar) but, I believe the bigger fish, esspecially Tiger/Albino Oscars are more important then a tank with beautiful landscape with TINY fish.
ProTuner06 5 months ago
@ProTuner06 I don't understand how you can say something is more important just because its bigger. Do you believe oak trees are more important that algae? Trees are bigger but tiny algae is way more IMPORTANT to the ecosystem. TINY things can be important too. Cool, you have a tiger oscar, awesome, just because its bigger doesn't mean its better. I'm not saying smaller is better, I'm just saying judging based on size alone is ridiculous.I bet your tank isn't half as good as this one.
dk0793 5 months ago
@ProTuner06 DK0793 has a good point, as well, but generally people who create aquascapes at this level realize that smaller fish make the scape appear much larger and impressive. The focus here isn't on the fish - the focus is on the beautiful design and architecture of the aquascape itself. Also, specifically at your point of adding an Oscar to these tanks - Oscars love to pick things up and move them around if they're in the way. Something one definitely does not want in this case.
CNeon1 5 months ago
@ProTuner06
depends on the aquascaper taste and creativity to have big or smaller fishes. but smaller fishes can make the tank looks bigger in designing perspective plus, can have more fishes in a small tank compare to bigger fishes.
usermodes 5 months ago
@ProTuner06
I can tell by your response that you know nothing about keeping a planted tank, or why people like myself and so many of the other people here do this, so you should probably check out a forum or two on planted tanks before making silly comments.

how do you clean it?
joeybutts13 5 months ago
I have a question: How do you get the plants to grow so well? and what are good aquatic plants for beginner aquascapers?
fuzzyfishable 6 months ago
@fuzzyfishable
I haven't done any aquascaping YET, but I'm pretty sure there's natural bacterial supplements/fertilizers, and Co2 diffusers along with the giant lights let/force the plants to grow in a better then suitable environment.
CommentAndFavorite 6 months ago
@CommentAndFavorite
yes. beneficial bacteria is crucial in planted tank to keep the ecosystem balance to control the quality of the water. the BB colony need to be matured inside the filter. co2 and lights is a must for medium to hightech tank and fertilizers are optional but highly recommended (for me, Potassium is a must in all my tanks).
:)
usermodes 4 months ago
@fuzzyfishable
1 - knows what they need to thrive.
2 - mosses and ferns (plants for low tech tank)
usermodes 5 months ago
What kind of moss is that? I'm thinking of setting up a tank for a cray fish and want to make it a planted tank. Give them something to munch on if they're hungry. While still having open sand and hiding places. I've got a 10 gallon atm.
CommentAndFavorite 6 months ago 2
@CommentAndFavorite
errr.... we dont put planted tank in aquascape for fishes to munch.. >_<

i personally do not recommend a planted plants inside a tank with 'vegetarian' fish. LOL!!!.. you might take few weeks to grow em, and they'll finish or kill em off in a night or two.. :P
