  • Upset???? Ray Robinson won his first title in 1946 this is 1960. Ray was 39 and veteran of well over 100 fights. To say Ray was way past his best is an understatement. Not taking anything away from Pender but this can hardly be called on upset.

  • @andrewr62 It was an upset.

Robinson was a big favorite to beat Pender.

  • even muhammad ali knowb as the greatest worldwide looked up to this man (the true greatest) ali even said it himself

  • @tiopira5

Ali got a lot of that clutch-and-grab style from SRR. He was doing most of the holding here and deserved to lose. Long live Paulie Pender.

  • @lvlarzyciel wtf? Robsinson was WELL outside of his prime when he fought Pender

  • too bad. ray would'a knocked him cold

a few years before this. by this time

robinson had over two hundred fights -

thats ten fights a year for twenty years -

how many top contenders did pender

    ever fight?

  • another hugging contest

  • paul pender is my 12 cousin, twice removed another time, then another on my half blood uncles side who is twice removed to my other cousin....i feel so proud

  • proud of what...sugar ray robinson is the greatest of all time

  • i was joking....

  • I saw the second fight. Pender I felt lost the first 5 founds, though after, Pender sort of dominated. None the less, I had Pender losing, though by a very close decision. The judge who gave Robinson only one round should have been ashamed of himself.

  • 1 robinson

    1 sam langford

    2 armstrong

    3 willie pep

  • No Ali. No Louis. No Marciano. No Dempsey. No Pep. No Armstrong. No Tyson. No Formen, fuck no. No Smokin Joe. No Liston.

    Sugar, baby, Sugar.

    The Greatest of All Times.

  • If this fight had been fought anywhere but Pender's backyard, Robinson wins it by a wide, wide margin.

  • Paul was a good fighter and a nice guy. I met him many times as a kid and even had some boxing lessons with him. He had very brittle hands that hampered him throughout his career.

It's nice to see him remembered fondly by some here.

  • Paul Pender was my Grandads cousin....I just found that out! I hope I am right!

  • Paul pender is my grandfather and ive never seen any of his fighting thanks for posting this

  • What a great display of the boxing skill and power of Pender. Clearly, he is a fantastic fighter worth remembering.

  • Paul Pender was a great man. With a great story.

A former football star ( Michigan State)

    and more: ringsidereport . com/Smith12152004

  • Pender was seen as a nothing by Sugar-less Ray but made the mistake of fighting in Paulie Pender's neighborhood.

Then Paul played tag with Terry Downes, who got a reatch after Pender knocked him out.

  • Hey Dude; Robinson lost this fight...15 rounds on his feet at 39, after 160 fights( over 174 in his carreer). Don't try and put down perhaps the greatest boxer in history because some judges scored in favor of Pender...the announcer even said the ref thought Robinson had the fight.

  • @BooBooLane Terry beat Paul in the first match and Paul regained the title in the rematch

  • cool hes related to me

  • how-are you yet another nephew or grandson?

  • Robinson was 39 years old. The Sugar was starting to turn sour then.

  • Pender was a good fighter. Still the great Sugar Ray was at least 10 years past his best here. In his prime

I believe Sugar Ray would have won easily.

  • Pender was a clever fighter, beat our Terry Downes I believe. Love to see the whole fight.I trained a man who also beat Terry Downes... a hard man to beat! Good stuff Mantis.

  • Pender fought Downes 3 times 2-1 to Pender all world title fights. Downes won the 2nd fight to take the title only to lose it back in the 3rd meeting between the two

  • Looking at this clip, I wonder how Pender won this fight? Sugar Ray was doing all the punching while Pender was clinching most of the time! I wish I could see the whole fight.

  • The clip is very misleading, Pender was a tough as they come and Robinson really tired as the fight went on. This was when his 25 year career was catching up with him. Pender won the rematch easily.

  • Kap, both fights were grip and nip fests which could have been called draws.

You probably would get bored by them but it would be nice if every major fight ever could be posted in full. Many apparently were not even filmed at all. At Y/T we only get a tiny fraction but it sure is better than nothing.

  • @kaspafischer

Ray did most of grabbing, look again.

  • this guy was my dad's cousin.........beat carmen basillo too....unheralad fighter
