  • Reason why Mac and Windows prevails is they muscled their way onto the market. Sad truth is money talks.

  • It's still less annoying than Windows for me. Eh.

  • Comment removed

  • We call these kind of people as: " Santhosh Pandit "

  • @aravind185 And what is that?

  • There are dozens of distros but it's next to impossible to find but one without flaws, stability problems. I'm a begginer. I can't get open gl running again every time unity crashes or wine starts freaking out.

Great looks don't make better system. Best system is a reliable one. And simple to use.

  • @MsDarkMatter try an older Ubuntu unless you are talking about the distro unity then never mind

  • @SgtCraigHart1 I did. And I've had sound issues all the time. Same thing with Mandriva.

  • When I use Windows 7, I feel like using KDE 3.5 some 5 years ago. Primitive desktop manager, visual effects, everything. KDE now is way superior to it, technically it is even possible to create a KDE Plasma shell that mimicks Windows 8 desktop.

About sluggishness... I'm currently watching this video (without Flash BTW), compiling VLC and kernel, and everything is still smooth and responsive, all this on a single-core AMD Sempron. The computer is 4 years old, yet I see no reason to upgrade it.

  • @Reloaded211

Cool, when I use windows, I tend to replace explorer.exe with kde for windows. LOL

  • I used Linux for at least a year before GNOME 3 and Unity, and I didn't even use either for extended period of time until six months later. While they may have great appeal to new users, I certainly was NOT that new to Linux when I started with GNOME 3, yet I liked it quite a bit more than GNOME 2, even Unity I prefer over plain GNOME 2.

  • written and produced by Microsoft, directed by Bill Gates!

  • If you are a web surfer and thats the only thing you do, then yeah, go for linux. But if you are a gamer, graphics designer, programmer, go for windows 7. Linux is still a mess and bloated. It's going to get bigger and bigger until you wont be able to run it on any dual-core system.

  • @dalexandruz What Windows over Linux for programming? That just doesn't make sense on so many levels.

#1 Linux is a programmers playground

#2 Linux teaches you so many philosophies

#3 You learn to utilize programming standards.

#4 Free software (as in freedom)

But yeah I agree with you that linux is not for everyone.

  • @dalexandruz Maaaaybe graphics designer. If you choose your games carefully, you can have a lot of fun (I have). For programming Linux > Windows so bad it hurts. It pains me to program on a windows after experiencing it on a linux. Anyone who wants security needs to go on linux as well, because it actually has security inside the OS, rather than just allowing any program that gets installed to access everything with unlimited privileges (and they wonder about windows viruses...)

  • There are no drivers for the actual kworld ub435-q usb tv tuner from kworld. So i had to waste more than an hour to figure out how to use other generic drivers to make the tuner work and i did. But unfortunately it does not run that well in kaffeine. The reception is just bad and under windows 7 i don't have any of this problem. plus kaffeine eats 70 - 80% of cpu resources.

@zylabon, what is the point of donating $200 for a crappy linux when i can get another windows 7 OS license?

  • Actually @krazykilper, i would rather use proprietary software over linux software. The majority of linux software is buggy and makes linux system like ubuntu run sluggish. Never seen a bsod so far for the past 2 years. I never had a virus since i'm using kaspersky and avoid porn sites. Windows 7 is extremely fast on a intel c2d 2.4ghz. I had so many crashes, freezes, sluggish performances with ubuntu for the past 4 years.

  • Linux never suck. Get real moron.

  • @kjelltp there is minor issues with anything linux included but i agree it doesn't suck... im a fedora 14 user and i love it

  • take this fuckin video off this is embarrasing man

  • Windows ftw! linux sux go play with your drivers!

  • @krazykilper have fun with you bsod, viruses and locked down proprietary software, tool

  • @emewify had a new system for a little under the year...not even one THREAT...git own3d l2p

  • I dislike Unity so much that I don't even want to use Ubuntu at all. I don't like having to remove stuff from the standard version. It would be nice to get some choices on what to install and what not to install. I want a classic desktop enviroment without docks and shit. A simple desktop and a taskbar.

  • I use fluxbox. Stays pretty much the same. :P

  • windows sucks........it's not about the graphic.

  • How do freetards expect to be taken seriously when they constantly SCREAM "LINUX IS AWESOME!!!! WINDOZE BLOWS!!!" ...when Linux can't even capture audio reliably?

Desktop Linux is an absolute joke and it will always be so.

  • "And users are gonna load up the Ubuntu Software center, click on games and get an alphabetical list of THOUSANDS of games... and like every single one of them but twelve suck so bad..."

I know how you're feeling, man...

  • W7 FTW !

  • Unity is just really awesome! It's just evolution guys, stop hating on Unity. It makes Ubuntu look good.

  • @cottonseal looking good is a matter of opinion. And choosing your desktop is just that - a choice. Personally I never liked having icons on my desktop, that's why GNOME was perfect. A panel, and you go from there. I was using GNOME 2.x till they released Oneiric, that's when GNOME wasn't even included, and installing it from ubuntu repositories by default - gave you GNOME 3... so yeah... Since 11.10 I switched to Xfce on my desktop and Lxde on netbook.

  • yeah, money problem is the answer... Can we ask a company to fund the software project with the agreement we put their ads in a flash message or image when opening the software.. for example, when opening audacity we would see emimusic ads for a second... sorry for my bad english

  • As seeing as Linux is open & free motivated from the user side, it is unlikely it will get a change in culture so that users fund Linux based software. I think it is better to concentrate on co-ordination & prioritization of some key software applications among developers. Also Linux should be promoted more to the public & private sector so that businesses can avoid commercial software high costs & instead make some donations to fund some Linux projects they would benefit from.

  • Pulseaudio sucks! But I have the knowledge to revert to ALSA. Problem is a lot of Windoze/Ubuntu converts/users can't because they're too thick.

Gnome 3 is what KDE 4.0 was. Everyone moaned then, but now they're loving it at version 4.6. Development is a way of life for Linux users. If you don't like it you're on the wrong OS.

  • Computer world is not in the right track.

In biology world, we get funding from universities, companies, and then we publish our work, contribute to the world.

Open source should go into universities. Teachers should teach students using open sourced codes. Computer science(CS) students and professors alike should be doing their projects on improving a existing algorithms in an Open sourced program. No, now CS professors are more like just teachers, or even businessman, unlike 1980s.

  • maybe if people would actually see how much money is been donated live, maybe other people would start donating to reach the required fund.

  • 'This [sound] sucks more than anything that has ever sucked before'. (Butt-Head)

    Thanks for this critical contribution.

  • Ubuntu Unity is buggy as hell.

  • Some of my videos say Garageband doesn't suck.

All of this makes sense. I wish I knew the slightest crap about making or converting code so I could help open source projects.

  • Mythical man month? It's known as the "law of diminishing returns" in economics. x)

  • Pulseaudio sucks. i like Leonart Poettering, but Pulse Audio .. bad idea. you want linux audio to work .. why not ALSA2 ? not some other layer. greets to the LAS folks and fans :)

  • holy cow what happened to your hair

  • All Right!! Let's rally a group of people who like to use something because it is free and try to get them excited about paying for it!! Good luck Linux community

  • Why not have Google Android-like advertisement supported applications? Click on an ad at the initial startup, then click on an ad in the About software section if the software helps you somehow. Problem solved.

  • Bryan,

when people in the audience ask or comment, you have to either make sure they use a microphone or repeat their question. Guessing to what you are actually answering is annoying.

  • Linux was made for the love of programming and to make the world a better place(so that people won't have to constantly spend more $ on software). Most of the people who develop Linux don't do it to make $, they mostly do it for fun or as a hobby. Sure, Linux isn't stable yet, but come on! You're saying it sucks, but it doesn't.

  • Yup, I agree that Android is nothing like desktop linux but I love it, if not more than desktop linux. It simplifies everything that makes desktop linux stupidly complicated and makes it much more usable for the standard user and it still has the same power, I mean, if you root you android, it can have a full root terminal... I would classify it as a better future evolution of linux, it is better than desktop linux...

  • What is wrong with OpenShot, I am confused, it has titles, it even has a freakin menu dedicated to titles, it is freakin amazing and awesome...

  • @LewisHNL Yeah. I used OpenShot since Nov 2010. They had titles since then (even the dynamic ones which require Blender)

  • Personally I love Unity, I love all of the Ubuntu changes and while it is buggy, it is worth it, I mean Ubuntu always did have a secondary version which isn't, an older updated preserved version. Unity brings two things, awesome universal everything search, and new better bigger tablet size icon interface, oh yea and a million new nice keyboard shortcuts

Sure Xorg sucks and I can't wait for Wayland because as you said, I use Nvidia drivers and it does break sometimes, oh yea and Nouveau sucks

  • OpenSource is free and thats why it's slow, but it's non dead. I'm using Arch linux for almost 2 years for now, and i'm running it without problems.

  • This guy is a moron. He realizes that open source is a dead end cause there's no commercial profit to make, yet he still advocates for Linux. He wants to turn Linux into OSX, that ain't gonna happen.

  • The only reason that I like Linux is because of the penguin.I am a die-hard penguin fan. Other then that, I don't really fucking care about Linux at all.

  • @MrPikmin16 Finally, Somebody who understands me.

  • Wow. Linux is really fucking bad. Even this video about Linux has audio constantly cutting out as a "feature".

  • Linux is hilariously bad.

There is no reason for the average person to even consider it.

  • @livinglegend1187

True to an extent. I'd definitely recommend an android device to other people but I wouldn't recommend linux to others as a lot of things still need to be done via the terminal. In the 80s and 90s you had people that were afraid to use the GUI in order to install software but you still have people worried about using the terminal to install software considering that the terminal can let you do pretty much any thing(including screw your system up) Maybe in...

  • @waqasahmed939 Dude, have you used Ubuntu? The terminal is hardly ever used. It's used for when you have a problem and you post on the forum and they tell you what to enter, and it's not that hard. But pretty much everything has a gui front end now. Also, Ubuntu in this day and age is perfect for people who 'just wanna browse the net' because they won't be gaming or video editing (KdenLive isn't bad) and everything they need is preinstalled. They can also just get stuff from the centre easily.

  • @AngryRantingNerd

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 now actually. I agree that it's not that hard, but the average consumer wants something to simply work rather than having to call for help, and even then they simply do not want to mess about with the terminal, as a lot of people have the idea ingrained in their head that it's a hacking tool and can screw up the PC.

And as far as "browsing the net" goes, then I did say that I'd only give a PC to them once it has been preconfigured, though getting appl..

  • @waqasahmed939

..cations is getting easier through the Ubuntu software centre

  • @livinglegend1187

... five years time or so, I may recommend linux as an OS to the regular Joe. However saying this, if a relative or friend simply wants a computer simply to browse the net and has a £5 PC(or an old PC), then as long as I set everything up for them before hand and they should be ready to go(if they do only ever use the web browser on a PC)

  • You just can't compare Ardour to Audition and ProTools. Ardour is one of the most unfriendly editors I've ever tried. I just CAN'T do serious audio or video editing on Linux.I love Linux but I wish it worked. I understand what you mean about not being able to move to Linux 100%. I've been through the same thing. ) JC

  • your sound suckssss

  • I like Unity ^^

  • here we go again...

  • If people think Unity sucks then you can install Gnome Shell in the next release or whatever desktop environment you want to install. Just because Unity is the default does not mean you are locked into it! -_-

  • @Lacotemale

I had major issues with Gnome 3, and I eventually had to reinstall fully. THe only way I could revive my desktop was to download a KDE interface(To find my files) I'm a new user and I don't think unity is that bad in all fairness

  • Comment removed

  • unity sucks donkey nuts.

  • Unity will be the death of Ubuntu

  • @uni4dfx No it won't. Don't be silly.

  • the sound is really fucked up sort of like linux

  • LMMS = garageband.

  • $75 for halo brand new when it first came out is so cheap in australia brand new games in australia are about 100 bucks even tho our dollar is almost equeal to usa and sometimes is greater.

  • Living in Arkansas, I literally laughed out loud at the income joke. Totally on spot.

  • Y-You know, after a w-while i stop noticing t-the skipps.

  • @VelocityTheory It's like copy X from mega man zero 3.

  • Donate $200 to Debian, its a non-profit organisation, then 100% of your money will serve free software.

  • I just fastforwarded to hear the applause.

  • Seems OpenShot has been given some undeserved bashing. First of all Byran showed an old screenshot of an old version. Check this for what it actually looks like:

    tinypic.com/r/qoswnb/7

OpenShot includes a Title designer, transitions and effects. Has Byran even tested OpenShot before talking shit about it?? By the way title is found by clicking Title>>New Title. Hmm... not that hard to find eh?!

I liked the video otherwise, most points were pretty valid!

  • @Lacotemale It's because These newest Open Shot version is not in the Ubuntu repository, he probably did not look at the Homepage. You will have to install it via PPA. Which is out right silly. Possible but silly, when we are taught to download from SoftwareCenter/Synaptic.

His point still holds true. Open Shot as an example is buggy still, and in order to keep it clean and constantly developed, it has to be funded.

  • Am I the only casual Linux user?

  • @ZetaSimsoy define "casual linux user".

  • @BrandurJustinussen Internet, chat and typing?

  • Very good video ! Lunduke is the man !

  • webos? it runs linux and has a userspace binary interface. Using the pdk u can write c++ and run it on the webos devices

  • I bet the integrated software on this camera runs on Linux

  • Good video, I agree that drivers and software are the two main issues. I wouldn't mind either way if there is a global package manager either.

About the actual video, as it was quite an interactive talk, it would have been nice to have a second camera on the crowd. Whenever a question is asked to the crowd we can see the response.

  • Owner of 2 laptops, one with a top of the line NVidia GPU (2005), and the other with a Intel GPU (2005); and the Intel today is much faster and stable with Unity and games. For now, I will only buy Intel GPUs.

  • I've only used linux for 2 years, oh well nice video.

  • this video is full of win! it says exactly what i thought (especially, DEs) but in better words!

  • The OpenSource Pandora Gaming console is running Linux .

  • i think brian is behind on his mortgage ........

  • Great speach once again. I'v been waiting and looking forward to this episode. =) You should make a "linux sucks" t-shirt and I would probably be half of your t-shirt sales this month. =P

  • will these be up on jb website to download?

  • instead of dumbing down the desktop UI, why dont they promote better driver support. that would help much more.

  • I've been waiting for this!!

  • Bryan for president ???

  • Yes, people need to spend roughly the same amount of money on free/open Linux software as the comparable Windows/Mac software. Windows 7 costs $200. You know what? Donate $200 to Canonical on the next LTS release of Ubuntu. Just that easy.

  • Yeah but we've all already contributed way over $200 worth of code. The users are the same people trying to feed themselves. Maybe there's a few users who aren't developers out there? Or if not they're starving students. People with $200 to donate are the Mac users.

  • @korwinblue why Ubuntu? it gives almost nothing to Linux and its community, you should support Debian instead....

  • Advise for listeners. Pay attention to the context of each sucky thing that Bryan is referencing. Linux is fantastic...

  • rename the title ,"WHY WINDOWS SUCKS"

  • Bryan, if you had a show where you just talked about things that suck, I'd most definitely watch it... Come on, "Things That Suck"!

  • @RobLoach id love a bryan rants show! occasionally i get lucky and he reants about apple, oracle etc in las

  • I totally agree with lack of softwares Professor Bryan.

  • Bryan you are the adam carolla of nerds..lol love the show.

  • :)
