When I use Windows 7, I feel like using KDE 3.5 some 5 years ago. Primitive desktop manager, visual effects, everything. KDE now is way superior to it, technically it is even possible to create a KDE Plasma shell that mimicks Windows 8 desktop.
About sluggishness... I'm currently watching this video (without Flash BTW), compiling VLC and kernel, and everything is still smooth and responsive, all this on a single-core AMD Sempron. The computer is 4 years old, yet I see no reason to upgrade it.
I used Linux for at least a year before GNOME 3 and Unity, and I didn't even use either for extended period of time until six months later. While they may have great appeal to new users, I certainly was NOT that new to Linux when I started with GNOME 3, yet I liked it quite a bit more than GNOME 2, even Unity I prefer over plain GNOME 2.
If you are a web surfer and thats the only thing you do, then yeah, go for linux. But if you are a gamer, graphics designer, programmer, go for windows 7. Linux is still a mess and bloated. It's going to get bigger and bigger until you wont be able to run it on any dual-core system.
@dalexandruz Maaaaybe graphics designer. If you choose your games carefully, you can have a lot of fun (I have). For programming Linux > Windows so bad it hurts. It pains me to program on a windows after experiencing it on a linux. Anyone who wants security needs to go on linux as well, because it actually has security inside the OS, rather than just allowing any program that gets installed to access everything with unlimited privileges (and they wonder about windows viruses...)
There are no drivers for the actual kworld ub435-q usb tv tuner from kworld. So i had to waste more than an hour to figure out how to use other generic drivers to make the tuner work and i did. But unfortunately it does not run that well in kaffeine. The reception is just bad and under windows 7 i don't have any of this problem. plus kaffeine eats 70 - 80% of cpu resources.
@zylabon, what is the point of donating $200 for a crappy linux when i can get another windows 7 OS license?
Actually @krazykilper, i would rather use proprietary software over linux software. The majority of linux software is buggy and makes linux system like ubuntu run sluggish. Never seen a bsod so far for the past 2 years. I never had a virus since i'm using kaspersky and avoid porn sites. Windows 7 is extremely fast on a intel c2d 2.4ghz. I had so many crashes, freezes, sluggish performances with ubuntu for the past 4 years.
I dislike Unity so much that I don't even want to use Ubuntu at all. I don't like having to remove stuff from the standard version. It would be nice to get some choices on what to install and what not to install. I want a classic desktop enviroment without docks and shit. A simple desktop and a taskbar.
How do freetards expect to be taken seriously when they constantly SCREAM "LINUX IS AWESOME!!!! WINDOZE BLOWS!!!" ...when Linux can't even capture audio reliably?

"And users are gonna load up the Ubuntu Software center, click on games and get an alphabetical list of THOUSANDS of games... and like every single one of them but twelve suck so bad..."
@cottonseal looking good is a matter of opinion. And choosing your desktop is just that - a choice. Personally I never liked having icons on my desktop, that's why GNOME was perfect. A panel, and you go from there. I was using GNOME 2.x till they released Oneiric, that's when GNOME wasn't even included, and installing it from ubuntu repositories by default - gave you GNOME 3... so yeah... Since 11.10 I switched to Xfce on my desktop and Lxde on netbook.
yeah, money problem is the answer... Can we ask a company to fund the software project with the agreement we put their ads in a flash message or image when opening the software.. for example, when opening audacity we would see emimusic ads for a second... sorry for my bad english
As seeing as Linux is open & free motivated from the user side, it is unlikely it will get a change in culture so that users fund Linux based software. I think it is better to concentrate on co-ordination & prioritization of some key software applications among developers. Also Linux should be promoted more to the public & private sector so that businesses can avoid commercial software high costs & instead make some donations to fund some Linux projects they would benefit from.

Linux was made for the love of programming and to make the world a better place(so that people won't have to constantly spend more $ on software). Most of the people who develop Linux don't do it to make $, they mostly do it for fun or as a hobby. Sure, Linux isn't stable yet, but come on! You're saying it sucks, but it doesn't.
Yup, I agree that Android is nothing like desktop linux but I love it, if not more than desktop linux. True to an extent. I'd definitely recommend an android device to other people but I wouldn't recommend linux to others as a lot of things still need to be done via the terminal. In the 80s and 90s you had people that were afraid to use the GUI in order to install software but you still have people worried about using the terminal to install software considering that the terminal can let you do pretty much any thing(including screw your system up) Maybe in...
@waqasahmed939 Dude, have you used Ubuntu? The terminal is hardly ever used. It's used for when you have a problem and you post on the forum and they tell you what to enter, and it's not that hard. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 now actually. I agree that it's not that hard, but the average consumer wants something to simply work rather than having to call for help, and even then they simply do not want to mess about with the terminal, as a lot of people have the idea ingrained in their head that it's a hacking tool and can screw up the PC.
And as far as "browsing the net" goes, then I did say that I'd only give a PC to them once it has been preconfigured, though getting appl..

$75 for halo brand new when it first came out is so cheap in australia brand new games in australia are about 100 bucks even tho our dollar is almost equeal to usa and sometimes is greater.
Seems OpenShot has been given some undeserved bashing. First of all Byran showed an old screenshot of an old version. Check this for what it actually looks like:
tinypic.com/r/qoswnb/7
OpenShot includes a Title designer, transitions and effects. Has Byran even tested OpenShot before talking shit about it?? By the way title is found by clicking Title>>New Title. Hmm... not that hard to find eh?!
I liked the video otherwise, most points were pretty valid!
@Lacotemale It's because These newest Open Shot version is not in the Ubuntu repository, he probably did not look at the Homepage. You will have to install it via PPA. Which is out right silly. Possible but silly, when we are taught to download from SoftwareCenter/Synaptic.
His point still holds true. Open Shot as an example is buggy still, and in order to keep it clean and constantly developed, it has to be funded.
Good video, I agree that drivers and software are the two main issues. I wouldn't mind either way if there is a global package manager either.
About the actual video, as it was quite an interactive talk, it would have been nice to have a second camera on the crowd. Whenever a question is asked to the crowd we can see the response.

Yes, people need to spend roughly the same amount of money on free/open Linux software as the comparable Windows/Mac software. Windows 7 costs $200. You know what? Donate $200 to Canonical on the next LTS release of Ubuntu. Just that easy.
Yeah but we've all already contributed way over $200 worth of code. The users are the same people trying to feed themselves. Maybe there's a few users who aren't developers out there? Or if not they're starving students. People with $200 to donate are the Mac users.
Reason why Mac and Windows prevails is they muscled their way onto the market. Sad truth is money talks.

instead of dumbing down the desktop UI, why dont they promote better driver support. that would help much more.

@korwinblue why Ubuntu? it gives almost nothing to Linux and its community, you should support Debian instead....

Advise for listeners. Pay attention to the context of each sucky thing that Bryan is referencing. Linux is fantastic...

Bryan, if you had a show where you just talked about things that suck, I'd most definitely watch it... Come on, "Things That Suck"!
