we have the same problem in australia, we have not been able to convince retailers to offer a recycling / trade-in Programs. so instead we have done it alone with advertising direct to mobile phone customers.

they charge for refurbished phones so they should give something back; sort of a refundable deposit like with beer bottles; i'm not returning my phones to them so they can turn around and make money on them again; they overcharge for everything as it is.

Im all for the environment however these companies are profiting off us recycling our cell phones. What I want to know is how I can extract the gold for myself from these old electronics. Why should I give my phone back to the company so they can reap the benefits?

Yes some people have no idea that there cell phones or electronics can be recycled. The cost of company to recycle these is high as well. Profit has to be within volume of cellphones collected.

I work in a cell phone store and the owners didn't even know about recycling when I was hired on. We now recycle many of them. I don't know why the government doesn't require a core charge on the purchase of new cellphones. They require me to return old car parts and battery's, why not cellphones? It's another way to either bring in profit to subsidize development of more eco-friendly cellphones, or just get the old ones off the streets.

i think more action needs to be done in Canada. there is no program awareness for cell phones, and no one here are informed about environmental impact. there are no bins in cell retail distributors and i think it should be it should be government regulated. if people do not want to drink toxic water, im sure everyone would do there part. the problem is the message is not out there.

I work for a wireless service provider, and we actually offer store/account credit for recycling your old phone. If the phone has no monitory value, we'll still recycle it for them.

There is also a great company out there called flipswap that will pay you for your old phone. You can check them out at flipswap(dot)com.

By the way, excellent video. It was actually shown at our last quarterly meeting to help us drive home the importance of recycling phones and other electronics. Way to go!!

I save up my electronic equipment, and take it to the collection place, on a scheduled day. I do the same with my hazardous chemicals / paint, and I recycle my daily waste, too.

I did hear about the people in 3rd-world countries, that are exposed to all kinds of bad shit, from our "recycled" stuff.

Makes you wonder what they hell you should do!

It is complex. It is still advisable to get as many uses as possible over the life of a phone. Keep your current phone as long as you can. If you decide to get a new one go check out secret-life(dot)org for recycling information. We all have to keep the pressure up to ensure there are controls put in place that prevent dumping 'e-waste'... Check out the resources page on secret-life (dot) org for deeper information. I know Whole Foods accepts cell phones for recycling. Make sure they get destroyed in the process - refurbishing is dangerous. The low safety, efficiency, etc. standards don't need to be carried over and profit incentives will cause businesses in the industry to do that. Cell phones are of special concern regarding many standards imposed to help protect the environment and us.
