To settle the inside golf ball debate: There is more than one type of golf ball 'inside'. Some are the stuff in the video, some just look like loads of elastic bands wrapped round each other, i've seen both. I'm sure there are other kinds too, those are the only two type i've ever seen in my "golfing" life so to speak.

You're using crap golf balls then...I highly doubt you could hit a golf ball against a tree soooo hard that it bursts after a couple of times! Do a google image search on 'golf ball inside' and there will be alot of pictures that closely match the video above (freeze it at 20 secs). This is a cheap 1-piece golf ball, so there is only one color of solid rubber core inside. The older balls (around the 1980s) had a core wrapped in a rubber band, that might be what you have.
