Julie was pretty magical to me as a six year old in the 80's. Now a days six year olds are playing with laptops. I loved the little book that came with her that had the removeable stickers. One was a moon, as I recall.
oh yeah, and i forgot to mention one other thing i found really cool about this doll. when she would talk, her lips and face would move with the sound of the words. it was so life like.
this doll was way ahead of its time. i remember first coming across this doll at someone's house. so unusual. amazing really. i thought it was just a normal doll and I picked it up and started playing with her. then, she started talking!! freaked me out. she told me her named and asked what mine was or something. i told her and all i remember is that at the time I thought this was the closest to a real life looking doll. technology was ahead of its time.
My mom got one she is 34 now she got when she lived in Germany I wasn't even a thought then my mom said that if she finds one she would get for me so we looked it up on the Internet and on eBay they were bidding and all that other stuff but my mom said there's probably a newer version of the Julie doll and there was she even has a best friend she is really amazing but very pricey
But dammit, do I remember THIS commerical from my Saturday mornings!
Forget the product; Even if it was ca-ca, this COMMERCIAL was SO awesome, SO touching, SO full of warmth & joy, that I was enchanted as a kid. From the acting, to the concept, to Winnie the Pooh's voice actor as narrator, it was JUST...CLASSIC. World of Wonders made a Mickey commerical to match it. Awesome post.
@electronic4evr Perhaps if you don't want her badly enough.....I love the name and the fact she's imprinted with a name I am in love with on her back (by the battery cover) and that she can recognize that hot beloved name when spoken! anything else she can do would just be a bonus ontop of that :-)
@RomanticLinguaphilia I've wanted one forever now...... Her name is pretty!! She also tells stories based on the theme of the cartridge you have in her. But you need the book to go along with it. She has a built-in story, but you still need the book. Also, she has real conversations with you!! She is truly amazing :) !!
@electronic4evr well from what I've read "the real conversations" thing might disappoint you, but if she can do half of what the imply, I'm interested in having one... and they were geniuses to go with that name...
I wonder if the Julie Doll and Teddy Ruxpin were inspirations for the movie A.I. Teddy R was probably programmed as a toy for a mecha-child. Teddy R was probably created to love others unconditionaly.
OMG , I had this doll when I was little.. my name is Julie and I remember I just had to have her... she was so ahead of her time and I totally regret getting rid of her I am going to find this doll again and give her to my little ones:) !!!! Miss my Julie doll... She rocked;)
I wanted a Worlds of Wonder "Julie" doll when i was a kid, but I never got one because it was too expensive. However,I would buy one nowadays just for the collectible value.
@cranie4 Nope, they're impossible to find! To be honest, though, I don't think I'll ever get one. She's pretty ugly, poor thing... Plus, I'd probably never find one of the cartridges to go with her if I did get her.
@blueoctopede And I really doubt she operates as advertised. Sort of the same thing they did to us with Furbies. Remember? "They learn from you the more you talk to them" Riiiight.
@cranie4 Actually, the doll did have voice recognition, and read stories when you put a cartridge in her and touch her hand to the "Magic Words" She wasen't NEAR as CRAP as Furbies are. But her voice synth chip sucks real bad, but not as bad as Pamela (she read stories like Juie, but did not have voice recognition or animated parts).
@kesumi100 you can still buy her on ebay. i bought one for my 25 year old sis cause she had one as a kid. she opened it on christmas and was soo happy
julie came in a large white box witha very similar desighn to juke box tube colours with her face in the middle , on both side ends were artwork of julie in different avaible outfits and script,on the back was the dolls owner and pictures of her reading from her book,i have her boxed with book and original outfit
Heh, I can remember literally begging my parents to buy me a Julie doll for Christmas when I was eight years old. I got one, too. Still have her, as a matter of fact. She's in the back of my closet, is missing her clothes, and needs batteries, but she still works.
"Meet Julie" (1987) an animated special by DIC was based on this doll. The doll Julie is given to a girl named Carol McAlister who accompanies her security heads father to Paris by ship to protect a jeweled collar worn by a snow leopard. Both the leopard and Carol's father are kidnapped by a crime organization, with the girl and her doll barely escaping when they fall overboard, leaving it up to Carol and Julie with her powers to rescue them. If anyone has this rare special, please post. Thanks.
For years it was stuck in my head but I didn't know the title of it until I happened across a description of it in "Encyclopedia of Animated Cartoons" by Jeff Lenburg which corroborated with what I saw and when I watched it. So, yes, the "Meet Julie" special was an exclusive tie-in with the Worlds of Wonder product and the doll featured resembled the product, voiced by actress Nicole Lyn.
Wonderful doll...you had to say the right WORDS for her to recognize the commands and she would reply...or lift her up. Still for the late 80's she was amazing.
I'm still wondering, how did she know it was light or dark? it's still too creepy..her face looked "zombied"..like a ghost child..why did they stop making her?
I don't know why but this doll scared the heck out of me, I felt she "knew" too much, like she was haunted or something, could not be in the same room with her..stupid isn't it?
I'm 28, and I got her on my 8th Christmas. I wanted Teddy Ruxpin but they were sold out, so my mom bought Julie instead. I never heard of her at that point and in the beginning, hated her. lol. I LOVED her once I had her for a bit.
I'm 27 now and I vividly remember getting this doll. She was awsome! She was so far ahead of her time; you still can't find a doll that does what she does. I have a GREAT home video of everyone in my family talking to her the Christmas that I got her. Priceless watching my grandpa, dad and uncle mesmerized by the doll when I picked her up and she says, "Are we going somewhere?" My college roommate was TERRIFIED of her when I brought her up one weekend for laughs.
I had her AND the book with the censors! I remember her voice box thingy broke and scared the hell outta me! She couldn't talk, the machine just made this guitar-feedback-ish noise... I think she was fixed though.
julie does all those things , and alot more she knows light and dark, when shes getting picked up,she needs certain words to get her to sing , if you say melody she will sing that song, she sneezes and then exscuses herself ,but you need to do the voice recognition when the doll is activated she also understands yes and no, hungry, and pretend ,and ok she also randomly talks about things she reads words from her book not adverised when her hand is placed on the sensors in her book ,
That is just another typical talking doll commerical - all hype until you get the doll on birthdays/christmases and it doesn't live up to what you expected of her. Very expensive rip-offs, that's what these damn dolls are! I suggest someone should stick to buying walkie-talkie dolls only as they offer better entertainment to little girls.
aww how sweet, wow toys realy knew how to aim there market to kids without being too pushy , this doll is so cute shes probably brighter than the child ,at least julie wont grow up to be an obnoxious teenager , heres a tip for all people who are scared of dolls they cant hurt you ,they are stuffing ,parts and other components , somebodys been watching far too many horror films
Wow! Thanks for posting this. I remember this commercial. In fact, it's what convinced me that I *had* to have a Julie doll for Christmas 1987. I was so excited to get her that morning, but unfortunately, she didn't live up to the promise of the commercial. It turned out (naturally) that you couldn't really carry on a conversation with her. After a few days, I was so disenchanted that my parents returned her to the store. I remember she cost almost $100!
@sentientred Yeah that commercial makes her sound amazing even for _today_ . But I now still want one after watching your video and it's all _your fault_ :-D
I bought this for my little girl. Christmas morning we got up. My little girl saw her sitting under the tree. I told her to say her name. My little girl said, "Julie?" Julie said, "Yes?" First of all, I am romantically in love with the name "Julie"...
Secondly, I am immediately reminded of the Eliza software program (around in the 80's) and/or AIML/AliceBot (popular today)
Thirdly, seeing an eBay auction showing wording on her back to the effect of "To get Julie's attention, say her name" makes me want one sooo bad....
Of course I'm gonna say that I'm just curious cause I'm currently employed as a software developer :-D
