  • This was ..nice! But I think Prey / Wunderlich are purest pleasure.

  • The world´s best tenors, no doubt about it! And Domingo is still going strong, it´s amazing how little his voice has changed over the years. And he´s always looking so kind...

  • I have this concert on blu ray - they cut out episode when Villazon forgot words lol

  • bravissimo Domingo...great ...as always

Geirrt! Danke an George Bizet, an Plazido und Rolando.

  • Love this! The best rendition so far ... I wanna hear Villazon with Terfel, though .. that would be great!!!

  • Villazon is often a thrilling singer; just because YOu don't think so, doesn't make you right. Domingo still has chops enough. By the way, this is an outdoor pops-style concert clearly some of the folk commenting don't understand why there are microphones; because they're outside singing to nearly 100,000 people that's why. And how, pray tell is th is "damaging" to opera? Some people!

  • Villazon is crap singing! Domingo had better days. It´s too much for my heart. I have seen Domingo in his peak days singing "Don Jose" in "Carmen"; I hope Villazon turns to be a peanut vendor in Mexico...

  • Magical!!! I don't care if Rolando made a mistake...They both are some of the hardest working tenors and they both have tried their best! it's an amazing performance!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • They have ABSOLUTELY no shame. This is cheating people. This kind of shows are really harmful. People forgets......

  • Cause of why? the Microphones?

  • I really like this clip, especially with this piece, because it shows the difference between out-of-class interpretation and nearly technical classic rendition. I'm ignoring that patched bit. A professional to the end- where's the rest of this clip?

  • Ugh, I can't STAND Villazon. *Headdesk*

  • Villazón is awful, he doesn't have a bel canto elegant line of singing, plus, he screwed up the lyric. Plácido was great as a baritone, plus, he saved Villazon´s screwed up lyrics with excellent timing.

Don't know why Rolando is so famous, a gigantic marketing, I think

  • Absolutely beautiful. This is one of my favorite duets. I'm gonna be doing this at my opera concert. The sound is so pure and elegant.

  • I think im right in saying that Red bull are using Au fond de temple saint for the Xfighters promo ad for its series soon to be shown on Dave, fantastic song works extremely well

  • Great but should be sung by baritone and tenor.

Villazon sings wrong text at 4.05

and rhen Domingo interrupts him singing the correct words

  • What a great performance from these two tenors. Even now Domingo has grown older he still has a wonderful voice . It is obvious that Villazon will be the second Domingo! What Domingo? He is Villazon and for me he is the best the very best of the young singers!

  • villazon messed up in the recit. kind of embarrassing

  • Great performance!!

  • ¡¡Qué bonito!!

    Rolando, te amo.

  • Sweet memories ... Placido still sings the stars of the heavens !

  • rolando villazon...disappointing me once again.

  • Superbe!! des voix uniques et chaleureuses!!

  • There was a mistake, Villazon forgot the lyrics or something like that, Plácido helped him, but it was very notorious

  • ugh...domingo belittled to a baritone....*sigh*

the other dude kinda looks like mr. bean :D

this still sounds like two tenors are singing it

  • um, hate to break it to you, but Domingo started as a baritone and then expanded his range to tenor notes.

  • yes domingo started as a baritone because no one knew he was a tenor. dramatic tenors are mistaken to be baritones at a younger age because they seem to have an already matured voice. so it seems like you're implying domingo is a raised baritone.

  • go listen to someone like bryn terfel or samuel ramey, and listen to domingo. completely different timbre, completely different voice category.

domingo does sound awesome as always, but he's not a baritone, or a raised baritone for that subject matter, and rolando villazon (lyric tenor) does look like mr. bean. domingo singing here does sound like a tenor singing in his lower register.

  • Good to know, and as for Terfel and Ramey, they're actually my two of my favorite singers so it was kind of a brain fart on my part, and to be honest I couldn't finish listening to this piece it just didn't seem to fit.

  • its because in place of domingo should've been a baritone/bass-baritone/bass, and villazon shouldn't have screwed up like he did. terfel and ramey are awesome bass-baritones. what didnt seem to fit actually?

  • So strange to hear Placido sing a Baritone role, but really lovely, nonetheless.

  • Donna!

    Mr Ibrowzgon lives!

(excuse me...this is a private joke...)

  • why was the end cut off!!!

  • that was amazing

  • Merril and the French tenor ( I forget his name) did a beter job I think.

  • I think it was Robert Merril and Jussi Bjoerling (pardon the spelling) Jussi was Swedish. They have the most beautiful version of this ever made. Velvet and liquid silver.

  • amen! Theirs is just heavenly... the glorious blend of their voices... awesome music!

  • Yes, I have already picked out Jussi singing "Ah, fuyez douse image" from Manon for my funeral music. I will have to hear it one more time. And his Nessun Dorma can outdo anyone.

  • It is very interesting to hear Domingo sing a baritone line; he studied as a baritone until 35, and retrained as a tenor as far as I know. This is not unusual. jonytrapalhony is right, the height of a voice isn't a good indicator of the voice type; a very few baritones have excellent height on their voice (some even go to the top C), but are still *baritones* because of where their voice sounds best, where their break lies, etc...

  • Pardon, but he IS a tenor. To classify a type of voice you have to see the type of texture of the voice.: The baritones have a warmer voice (has some authors say). The number of notes that a person can produce is another criteria, BUT, it can't be used alone. If you look for the new ideas about the voice classification, you'll see that Placido IS NOT a baritone, but a tenor.

Nevertheless, he is one of the greatest tenors and a great singer. I just like this song sang but a baritone.

  • I prefer the original version: A tenor and a baritone. It becomes a bit annoying with the same type of voice!

  • Don't look now, but Placido IS a natural baritone. His tenor voice is "modern architecture", as I read that someone called it. This precious man has worked and struggled for every semitone he's achieved. When he finally achieved Bb, I read that Marta was grousing because he was screaming it all the time.

  • Villazon don't study the music enough... or , he was very much nervous to sing with a Star like Placido.

Anyway Villazon has a fine voice, but not to sing Les Percheus de Perles (That opera is to a tenor like Alain Vanzo).

  • Villazon is one of his proteges.

  • But there are no living tenors like Alain Vanzo. Should they drop this marvelous opera from the repertoire?

  • anyone listened to Alain Vanzo???!!!

  • I can't stand watching Villazon sing. The 'vomit' faces are not endearing! Good to hear Domingo singing baritone. He has pretty much been baritone for a long time now anyway. Still plays with the sound too much, though - very hooty and kermit like. As is Villazon. I don't like this version. Terrible cock up in the middle from Villazon, and Domingo had to drag him back on track.

  • Villazon might have done better to see the clip (here on Youtube) of Domingo and Milnes singing the same duet at the Met (Levine conducted). Please compare. Domingo did a much better job.

  • Actually to my great surprise, the Milnes/Domingo version of "Au fond du temple sant" has been purged from my favorites, and Youtube altogether. Why do they do that?

  • Honey, I'll be blessed if I know. This group once had over 600 clips and is now down to around 260. No answer from Youtube when I queried them.

  • i remember the good old days when I used to come home everyday to a series of new domingo videos ... alone ... in my room ... and well you get the idea. Too bad for those that missed out, there have been some real good ones that have vanished.

  • there is a good recording featuring nicolai gedda and ernest blanc i forget the exact cdc title

  • It's a Nicolai Gedda CD titled Heroes, and it's the best version I've ever heard. Villazon sounds like a baritone from the first note. Finesse is a good thing in opera.

  • Nobody hits that note on 04:41 like Andrea Bocelli. It's so graceful and higher than all the others I've heard.

  • Au fond du temple saint is normally for tenor and bariton.

  • I was just crying and then the video's stopped! =( But it's really great! Thank you so much!

  • A beautiful duet!!! After listening to it in TV I searched for a CD, but UNFORTUNATELY there doesn't exist a CD with really good singers. So I'm waiting for a recording with Villazón and am getting more hopeful with every piece of this opera on his CDs. Just wonderful!!!

  • Extraordinario.

  • Sorry: This beautiful opera is called "Les Pecheurs de Perles" and is from "George Biset' made in 1863. Has three acts. In the past 100 years every great opera singer has singing this opera. Believe me is Art. Was sorprise for me that someone sing it. Sorry that it was not complete.

  • Really wonderful. Thank you

  • Wow, absolutely beautiful. One of the few operatic male duets that is actually inspiring.

  • eyewash there are a multitude of them. None perhaps with as much softness and longing perhaps

  • This is gorgeous. Thanks so much for posting. Domingo does look rather handsome in his old age.

  • Only "rather"? He's a hunk! He had a short ugly duckling period in his late forties, but other than that has been gorgeous since infancy.

  • It really does not get better than this. Truely. Even when Villazon messes up in the middle, this is the most divine thing I have ever heard. I was hopeing for this, but never though it would come. Thank you for posting this from the bottom of my heart. It brings tears to my eyes every time.

  • someone had posted the full versions of these before, but they're gone. I must say Domingo look a bajillion times more attractive than Villazon even at their ages.

  • Thank you!

  • I like this very much - thank you! And congratulation - I remember how difficult it was for the first time!

  • Yay! You finally got a video on. Keep them coming!!!

  • This is my first attempt at uploading to YouTube. This clip is truncated, because the free version of the ripping software has a 5-minute limit. Now that I know it works, I shall purchase the full version

  • If you now have the full version, I'm sure a bunch of us would like to see the full clip. (I'm assuming that you recorded the full concert on videotape.)
