i think MJFox was ever Marty for this role (refreshing, charismatic, etc.) but probably with Stoltz the movie would look like more dramatic, darker, as a B-version.
it's not that michael j fox is funnier than eric stoltz, i think it's because mfj is more likeable. nothing against eric stoltz, he's a great actor. i grew up watching him in memphis belle. but looking at the raw footage of him in back to the future, he just has a colder look to him. fox had that kid next door look.
I find it difficult to believe that any studio would make time demands on a Spielberg-produced film, especially in the eighties when Spielberg was basically the king in Hollywood.
Love michael j and it is HIS movie. On the other hand i would really like to watch an eric version as i think he is actually a very good actor. Maybe he did it more serious. I love eric though
Replacing was planned since the beginning... that's men are really scammers, but as all smarts they are idiots... and made mistakes you can see if you are careful and compare not the 2 actors but the 2 MARTYs. eheheh
@80sguy and that's the reason I prefer Eric Stoltz as Martin. Michael has always the same silly expression, an actor who knows only one expression :D. That's not artistic talent, it's only one of the many ways to make silly people. Thanks zemekis and spielberg:D.
He doesn't have the same expression. And having "artistic talent" doesn't mean he's right for the role. Again, they thought he played the role too seriously, it's a a family comedy film, not a drama. And it doesn't make much sense to say you prefer him to Micheal considering we haven't seen much footage of him other than a few seconds here and there, and we don't even know how he delivered the lines, and how well it connected with Christopher Lloyd.
@80sguy I think that eric stoltz would be better choice for that role in other perspective. Every movie i saw in which Michael worked, seem always the same character. Seem to see a reply of other movie. I think that see a character a bito more serious would not have wasted in a fantasy movie. one day will see the Stoltz performce and we'lll be able to have a better tidings.
@Sirrom5 seriously man. get real. i know you are just trying to get attention for being different. but wanting anyone besides michael j fox for back to the future is just plain idiotic.
@nilbog44 what attention! my opinion is different and I consider Michael a modest actor who served to the aim. That's my opinion. You cannot impose your vision, that's your problem. A different opinion isn't necessarly an idiot expression. All movies Michael worked he makes the same identical role.He isn't a versatile actor.
Wow ... wow ... This is true Hollywood history here! Thanks for posting! I feel BTTF would have been successful with Mr. Stoltz as Marty. It just wouldn't be the 'same' movie, just as if Carlos Estevez (aka Charlie Sheen) had been cast in "Born On The Fourth Of July" instead of Tom Cruise .. the result would be different. Casting is tricky, and perceivably critical, and may certainly affect exhibition receipts. Dave Lounder (Film Actor/Executive Producer)
It's quite obvious that Erik Stoltz wouldn't have made this movie the hit. Fox has this natural ability to make people laugh, just with a few subtle facial expression. Erik Stoltz ain't a comedian. He was really great in Some Kind of Wonderful, but he ain't funny. This movie needed a lot of comedy!
@tjcobra666 it'd be nice if they had released al the Eric Stoltz or if they would of actually the whole film with him then release it as an exclusive in a DVD later! I mean the reaction of Eric Stoltz when seeing his dad is truly fascinating!
@bardhi09 I heard he was very serious in the role, Like when Doc sent Einstein a minute into the future he said "Doc, The dog's dead" Not "You disintegrated Einstein!"
@tomharding No offense Tom, but it doesn't look like Mike is letting his condition slow him down too much. Everyone gets old, but not everyone gets to show us that despite diseases and disabilities that we can still live, work, and be pretty happy. What's heartbreaking to me is seeing perfectly healthy folk complain about bullshit like a fender bender, waiting in a long line, and overdone eggs or something trivial like that. It'd be great to get Mike's take on it.
@tomharding to be honest, in the last few months, he has started to look alot better, it must be a cocktail of medication, but he has looked alot less shakey latley. god bless him
@seansapir1 I had a boss who had it - there is a gland in your brain about the size of a pea- that controls all the signals of movement - so when you want to raise your arm, that is what sends the signal from your brain to your arm muscles to raise it. With Parkinson's, that glad is damaged; sending bad signals -so they shake, etc. That's why he is always rocking, hands waving, etc. For acting, He said he took medication making the movements not as noticeable. Sucky disease.
@tomharding And it's no wonder he got sick. They overworked this child half to death- as they say- he worked 2 full time jobs , long grueling hours and no proper rest. Hollywood killed Michael J Fox.
Can't believe Eric Stoltz was filmed as Mc Fly for five weeks before Fox finally managed to get his agenda right and agreed to make this movie. Wow imagine if Michael refused definitively the role ? The course of history would have been changed forever ! At this point it would have created a paradox, which would create a chain reaction that could reform the continuity of time and space and that destroy our entire universe! Making the universe collapse into nothing, bringing life to extinction!
The reason why there was so little footage in the Blu-Ray release has been given by Bob Gale in various interviews over the years: he didn't want to embarrass Stoltz. He always said that he'd never show the footage, but relented for the Blu-Ray release on condition that the footage would be brief snippets - without sound - in the context of a Behind The Scenes doco.
So don't hold your breath for a possible future release of the complete Stoltz footage. Most likely it'll be posthumous.
I truly hate complaining about it, but for all of this anticipation, and they only give us about 10 seconds of footage? They shot with Eric for WEEKS. We could have at least gotten one complete scene. Maybe the next re-release.
@ControlDenied307 I'd be surprised if it surfaced (officially) while Eric Stoltz is still working frankly as, considering that he was deemed unsuitable and fired from the film, it would make him look fairly bad and that would make Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis look mean spirited which wouldn't be the case.
@Sirrom5 I think you commented on the wrong person. I was responding to how the Eric Stoltz footage should have been included some on either the DVD or Blu Ray release if they shot for 5 weeks
i think MJFox was ever Marty for this role (refreshing, charismatic, etc.) but probably with Stoltz the movie would look like more dramatic, darker, as a B-version.

Swings and roundabouts. Stoltzy has done fine. Marty McFly is a juicy role, but not half as juicy as the father of the Cylon race.
